Andy Lind is a multi-instrumentalist from Germany. He plays drums in ‘The Ancestry Program’ and is the man behind the avant prog band LIND. ‘The Justification Of Reality Part II- A 3rd Ear Conversation’ is the second part of a trilogy. Many well-known (prog) guest musicians collaborated on this, including guitarist Kalle Wallner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The album has a gentle opening with ‘Wounded Knees’. The combination of sounds and music is special. The vocals sound distorted and are sometimes quite soft and calm in relation to the music. If you listen with a headset, the contrasts in styles and volume make it a little difficult to find the right volume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite some repetitions in ‘Lost Words’, it is always a surprise what is to come. Not all the words are easy to understand, moreover, the vocals keep sounding distorted. While this is allowed with this music, it is a bit dominating. As a result, the vocals lack some emotion. There are many twists of organ\/piano sounds, soprano saxophone, and guitar playing, among others, including a nice solo by Mike Voglmeier. Not to mention the rhythm section, as drums and bass also play an important part. A subdued part transitions into ‘This Dream’. Here, too, the build-up is experimental. Metal is interspersed with electronic sounds\/sounds, among others. One moment there is hectic, a little later this flows into a friendlier flow. The sound of the cymbals is a bit too shrill in the louder parts. The surprising instrumental jazz part is complex and largely played quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In ‘A 3rd Ear Conversation’, the jazz becomes more experimental with its melange of styles and details. While perhaps less accessible, it is interesting. The good sound quality makes it easy to hear the contrast between highs and lows. This well-constructed title track has a special ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the tracks that follow, too, you hear electronic sounds, low notes, unusual rhythms and lots of details, among other things. The sound flows nicely from one side to the other in the headset. The vocals generally keep sounding distorted. But in a few songs, including in ‘Another Try’, you can hear that there is another (guest) vocalist.
A change of vocalist is best featured in ‘Move On Gently’ here Caro Roth has the vocals, sometimes there are several layers in the vocals. In the jazz part, you hear bright sounds of fast but mildly played cymbals. There are many unusual blends and\/or changes of styles, rhythms, and of light versus heavier music. For a while, there comes a point that around is an overkill of music.
All the larger the contrast is with the friendly start of ‘Trapped In Haze’. This pleasant flow is interspersed with a grim\/angry atmosphere. The atmosphere can also be heard in the vocals. It ends gorgeously with a touch of music. Finally, the bonus track ‘A New Day’, it ends a little unexpectedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the (stacked) vocals sound distorted in most songs, the difference between the different vocalists is less noticeable. Parts of the vocals can hardly be understood, a pity if you want to know what the lyrics are about.
Vocal parts are interspersed with (extended) instrumental pieces. The melange\/interchange of styles is wide, moreover, there are unusual rhythms, numerous twists and details. The music occasionally goes against each other. Instrumentally, it is unusual and complex. At times it is at, or just over the edge of slightly too much. But that’s allowed with avant-prog, it’s a pleasure that there are bands that (continue to) release albums in this style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
