English prog band Mostly Autumn performed at De Bosuil in Weert on Sunday afternoon 17 December. The support act was The Dutch Lisa de Bruijn, aka Liza Weald. She describes her music as “conscious soul songs about self-love and the magic of life”. Very modestly, Liza, guitarist Thomas Couperus and bassist Ivan Schoelink walked onto the stage. Liza’s long-held wordless vocals matched the spiritual, mysterious music of ‘Spirit Song’. Very gently, she played her (vegan) shaman drum from Buffalo Drums. Then she played acoustic guitar. The backing vocals of Thomas and Ivan formed a beautiful harmony with Liza’s tender voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing Fiercer<\/strong>
During ‘Inner Tide’, Liza used a wind chime as an instrument, again she did this detail with a lot of concentration. Between several songs there was a guitar change. Due to the careful tuning, there were several, rather long silences. Even when Thomas played on electric guitar this did not dominate at all. Most people were quiet, so the sensitive songs came into their own. Before they started ‘Growing Fiercer’, the last song, Liza told us that Mostly Autumn was the first band she ever saw live. Then, as a 12-year-old girl, she knew: I want that too. She kept believing in herself, with the result that she was allowed to open on this Sunday afternoon. Despite small insecurities and imperfections in the band, you could feel the love for the music. Liza Weald should be proud of herself and her band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mostly Autumn<\/strong>
Almost unnoticed, Mostly Autumn’s first band members appeared on stage. ‘In for the Bite’ was the catchy opening. The first piece was sung by lead guitarist Bryan Josh.
Olivia Sparnenn-Josh appeared on stage just before her share of vocals. She always wears a pretty outfit, and this afternoon was no different. Usually bassist Andy Smith stays in a “corner” for a long time, but this time he walked to the centre of the stage during the opening song.
The images on the projector matched the music, for instance, at ‘Into the stars’ there was a starry sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Winter Mountain<\/strong>
‘Western Skies’ starts with Iain Jennings on keys and Angela Gordon on flute. You could feel the trills of Andy’s low bass. Again, Bryan’s guitar playing was compelling. In the subdued parts, Henry Rogers drummed suitably mellow; where he could, he beat beautifully powerfully. In the forte (=loud) parts, a single cymbal was quite shrill in sound. Bryan’s voice was a little hoarse at the beginning of ‘Winter Mountain’, moreover, he did not sing quite flawlessly. In the gentle parts, his harmony vocals with Olivia were good. You were actually short of eyes, there was a lot to see. During most of the instrumental pieces, Oliva danced. Andy and Bryan were regularly playing next to or in front of each other, you could see them enjoying themselves. The enjoyment could be seen in everyone.
Several songs ended suddenly, which went flawlessly with almost all of them. Guitarist Chris Johnson and Angela did backing vocals in several songs. The voices everywhere were in harmony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Heroes Never Die<\/strong>
Most of the songs that were played are often on the setlist. So was ‘Silver Glass’, which starts with piano sounds by Iain and flute by Angela. Chris’ high clear vocals were impressive again this afternoon. He was beautifully lit, the rest of the stage was dark. As the rest of the band joined in, more light came on. The tempo and volume changes were played very well. Both the intense and subdued parts probably got under the skin of several fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
