Whoever says Focus, says Thijs van Leer. The band has been around for over 50 years, fans of all ages visit their concerts. So too on Sunday afternoon 29 October in De Bosuil in Weert. The youngest fan was still in primary school age.<\/p>\n\n\n

Before the concert started, visitors were welcomed by Peter Verkennis of De Bosuil. He told about the “listen or whisper” action. “If you want to talk do it very quietly. In the pause you can of course talk loudly” he said. He then introduced Thijs van Leer with Focus. Thijs greeted the audience by saying, “Good afternoon, what a full house”. Despite the crowd, it was already quiet at the first whistle tones of ‘Focus 1′. Thijs’ wordless singing was supported by the sounds of a “church choir”. There was eye contact between Thijs and guitarist Menno Gootjes, his guitar playing was oustading. Udo Pannekeet had a quiet way of performing, but his bass (with 6 strings) was easy to hear. The sound was well balanced and beautifully toned. So was Pierre van der Linden’s drum kit. You could hear the pitch differences of the drums, also the cymbals had a warm sound. Especially just before the end of this opening track, he showed a fine performance of drumming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eruption<\/strong>
There was a hesitant clapping from the audience with House of the King. The applause at the end of this first big Focus hit was convincing. Eruption started with Thijs and Menno very subdued. Pierre and Udo remained quiet for a while. The men were clearly in tune with each other, because with one look from Thijs, Pierre and Udo started playing. They played fanatically in the up-tempo parts. In the quiet parts, Menno turned the tone knobs on his guitar with concentration, creating special effects. This was rightly rewarded with intermittent applause. The complex turns and rests were played perfectly. Thijs stepped out from behind his Hammond and calmly walked to the centre of the stage. At high tempo, light tones of the flute swirled through the hall. This formed a nice combination with Udo’s bass playing. On “command” from Thijs, the fans imitated his fantasy language; he visibly enjoyed this. Again there was extra applause. Thijs took his place behind his Hammond again for an up-tempo part, in which Pierre showed off a lovely solo. This wonderful epic of about 20 minutes had a fantastic build-up to the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
