Guitarist Steve Rothery is of course known from Marillion, whose hit ‘Kayleigh’ is familiar to almost everyone (young and old). On the beautiful late summer’s day of 7 September, Steve Rothery and his band were in De Bosuil in Weert (The Netherands). The support act was provided by progressive rock & pop duo The Dave Foster Band. The band was founded by guitarist\/multi-instrumentalist Dave Foster and Dutch singer Dinet Poortma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost unnoticed, Dave, Dinet and keyboardist Riccardo Romano appeared on stage. Even before a single note had been played, the murmurs in the hall had largely died down. This acoustic set began with ‘Cabello’. Dinet has a beautiful, clear voice. Her way of performing seemed a bit restless, she seemed somewhat nervous. But that was not audible in her singing. Occasionally, she looked sideways at Dave; he gave her a look of confidence. Between Dave and Ricardo, there was subtle non-verbal communication. The sound was good, and so was how they sang and played. Dinet showed a lot of variation in voice volume. Some of the high notes sounded a little uncertain. This was perhaps partly due to the chatter and laughter a bit further back in the venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glimmer<\/strong>
‘Dive In’ comes from the latest album ‘Glimmer’. Dinet sang these lyrics with a lot of emoti.
The song of ‘Marlene On The Wall’ was originally by Suzanne Vega. Dinet’s voice came out beautifully here too. Before the start of ‘Counting Down The Days’, Dinet said she needed help to sing “Yeah Yeah” along. People did, also clapping along. After this, the band left the stage. For Dave and Ricardo, it was just a break, as they are also part of Steve Rothery’s band.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ghosts of Pripyat<\/strong>
Steve Rothery and band appeared on stage without show elements. Soon the spherical start of ‘Morpheus’ sounded. The first soft, compelling guitar notes were played by Steve, of course. The tempo and volume changes were flawless. After this song, Steve greeted the audience, telling them that they would play a few more songs from ‘The Ghosts of Pripyat’. By the sampled sounds, it was clear that it was ‘Old Man of the Sea’. Steve and Dave played together for a while, playing with focus. The audience watched breathlessly. Drummer Leon Parr played beautifully softly in the quiet parts. At the moments when the tempo in the music was faster, Ricardo was half-dancing behind the keys.
Yatim Halimi’s bass was nicely balanced with the whole scene. Steve is the lead guitarist, but Dave’s part was big and good. For instance, he played an important fast part of ‘Summer’s End’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kayleigh<\/strong>
After these three wonderful songs, singer Martin Jakubski appeared. Because from now on, Marillion songs were played. They started with ‘Kayleigh’, of course this big hit was recognised from the very first notes. Martin’s voice fit the Marillion sound perfectly. Here it was Steve who took care of the rocking guitar playing. Fans clapped and sang along parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sometimes sudden turns in tempo and volume were played perfectly. Steve regularly played with his eyes closed, occasionally making eye contact with fans. The band members had subtle non-verbal communication, this was enough to understand each other. Despite their modest way of performing, it was clear that they enjoyed performing, and the reactions from the audience. Many songs were largely sung along, and every song was quite rightly rewarded with generous applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sugar Mice<\/strong>
Martin sang well, in ‘Cinderella Search’ he had great vocal breakdowns. Wherever he could, he showed pleasure. His emotional experience was well displayed in ‘Incubus’. One of his own favourites was ‘Sugar Mice’, it too was fantastically played and sung. Fans spontaneously sang along with songs like ‘Script for a Jester’s Taste’. The atmosphere in the venue was superb, people were fully enjoying themselves. A varied set was played. The last songs before the encore were ‘Three Boats Down From The Candy’, and ‘Fugazi’. The encore consisted of ‘Afraid Of Sunlight and ‘Garden Party’.

Steve Rothery and band had played for almost two hours non-stop. This was the first show of the tour. With this fantastically performed set, they set the bar very high for themselves. It won’t be easy to keep up. But the men are experienced enough to keep playing at this high standard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Steve Rothery begon zijn tour ijzersterk<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Gitarist Steve Rothery kennen we natuurijk van Marillion, waarvan bijna iedereen (van jong tot oud) de hit \u2018Kayleigh\u2019 kent. Op de prachtige nazomerdag van 7 september stond Steve Rothery met zijn band in De Bosuil in Weert. Het voorprogramma werd verzorgd door het progressieve rock & pop duo The Dave Foster Band. De band werd opgericht door gitarist\/multi-instrumentalist Dave Foster en de Nederlandse zangeres Dinet Poortma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bijna ongemerkt verschenen Dave, Dinet en toetsenist Riccardo Romano op het podium. Nog voordat er \u00e9\u00e9n noot was gespeeld, was het geroezemoes in de zaal grotendeels verstomd. Deze akoestische set begon met \u2018Cabello\u2019. Dinet heeft een mooie, heldere stem. Haar manier van performen kwam wat rusteloos over, ze leek nogal zenuwachtig. Maar dat was niet te horen aan haar zingen. Af en toe keek ze opzij naar Dave, hij gaf haar een blik van vertrouwen. Tussen Dave en Ricardo was er subtiele non-verbale communicatie. Het geluid was goed, en dat gold ook voor hoe er gezongen en gespeeld werd. Dinet liet veel variatie in stemvolume horen. Sommige hoge noten klonken een beetje onzeker. Dat kwam misschien deels door het geklets en gelach wat verder achterin de zaal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glimmer<\/strong>
\u2018Dive In\u2019 komt van het nieuwste album \u2018Glimmer\u2019. Dinet zong deze tekst met veel beleving.
Het nummer van \u2018Marlene On The Wall\u2019 is oorspronkelijk van Suzanne Vega. Dinet\u2019s stem kwam ook hier mooi uit. Voor aanvang van \u2018Counting Down The Days\u2019 zei Dinet dat ze hulp nodig had om \u201cYeah Yeah\u201d mee te zingen. Dat deed men, ook klapte men mee. Hierna verliet de band het podium. Voor Dave en Ricardo was het slechts een pauze, want zij maken ook deel uit van de band van Steve Rothery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ghosts of Pripyat<\/strong>
Steve Rothery en band verschenen zonder show elementen op het podium. Al snel klonk de sferische start van \u2018Morpheus\u2019. De eerste zachte, meeslepende gitaar tonen werden natuurlijk gespeeld door Steve. De tempo-en volumewisselingen verliepen foutloos. Na dit nummer begroette Steve de aanwezigen, waarbij hij vertelde dat ze nog een paar nummers van \u2018The Ghosts of Pripyat\u2019 zouden spelen. Door de gesampelde geluiden was het duidelijk dat \u2018Old Man of the Sea\u2019 was. Steve en Dave speelden even samen, ze speelden gefocust. Het publiek keek ademloos toe. Drummer Leon Parr speelde mooi zacht in de rustige delen. Op de momenten dat het tempo in de muziek hoger lag, stond Ricardo half dansend achter de toetsen.
De bas van Yatim Halimi was mooi in balans met het geheel. Steve is de leadgitarist, maar het aandeel van Dave was groot en goed. Zo speelde hij een belangrijk snel deel van \u2018Summer’s End\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kayleigh<\/strong>
Na deze drie prachtige nummers verscheen zanger Martin Jakubski. Want vanaf nu werden er Marillion nummers gespeeld. Ze begonnen met \u2018Kayleigh\u2019, natuurlijk werd deze grote hit van af de eerste tonen herkend. Martins stem past perfect bij de Marillion sound. Hier was het Steve die het rockende gitaarspel voor zijn rekening nam. Fans klapte en zongen delen mee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De soms plotselinge wendingen in tempo en volume werden perfect gespeeld. Steve speelde regelmatig met gesloten ogen, af en toe maakte hij oogcontact met de fans. De bandleden hadden subtiele non-verbale communicatie, dit was genoeg om elkaar te begrijpen. Ondanks hun bescheiden manier van performen was het duidelijk dat zij genoten van het performen, en van de reacties uit de zaal. Veel nummers werden grotendeels meegezongen, en ieder nummer werd heel terecht met een royaal applaus beloond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sugar Mice<\/strong>
Martin zong goed, in \u2018Cinderella Search\u2019 had hij mooie vocale uithalen. Daar waar het kon toonde hij plezier. Zijn emotionele beleving was goed te zien in \u2018Incubus\u2019. E\u00e9n van zijn eigen favorieten was \u2018Sugar Mice\u2019, ook deze werd fantastisch gespeeld en gezongen. Fans zongen spontaan mee met nummers als \u2018Script for a Jester\u2019s Taste\u2019. De sfeer in de zaal was geweldig, men genoot met volle teugen. Er werd een gevarieerde set gespeeld. De laatste nummers voor de toegift waren \u2018Three Boats Down From The Candy\u2019, en \u2018Fugazi\u2019. De toegift bestond uit \u2018Afraid Of Sunlight en \u2018Garden Party\u2019.

Steve Rothery en band hadden bijna twee uur non-stop gespeeld. Dit was de eerste show van de tour. Met deze fantastisch uitgevoerde set hebben ze de lat heel hoog gelegd voor zichzelf. Het zal niet meevallen om dit te evenaren. Maar de mannen zijn ervaren genoeg om op dit niveau te blijven spelen.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
