Tony (Anthony) Romero is the man behind ‘Tony Romero’s Vortex’. This American was actually planning to make a follow-up to ‘Noise Machine’. He revealed his ideas and together with his bandmates they exchanged audio files. During the recording process, it became clear that this felt different from Tony Romero’s Vortex (TRV). Sounding like a different band, RED32 was born. This debut album became a mix of (prog) rock, pop, and a touch of ambient. The album was produced as environmentally friendly as possible. RED32 chose recycled materials and vegetable-based inks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the intro of ‘Burn Into The Sun’, sound effects create a dull layer over music.
Steve Bonino has a clear pronunciation, his vocals staying at more or less at the same tempo, volume and pitch. The guitar playing is nice, the “beat” remains fairly constant. This opening track has a nice ending.
‘Evil Never Sleeps’ has a nice mix of drum programming and instrumental sounds. There is nicely played with the division of the music across the headphones. Steve’s own voice again comes out well. The electronic sounds of the keys are plentiful. The keys form a fine melange with bass and guitar. In the “hectic” part, the vocals are somewhat distorted. The melange and alternation between high and low tones is very good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The songs match each other fine, yet differ enough from each other. For instance, “Light Bearing Creatures” has an upbeat atmosphere. The order of the songs is well chosen. The balance between melody and rhythm is good, as are the instruments among themselves. Sometimes the drum programming snatches some attention away from, for example, bass or guitar playing. The alternation of instrumental and vocal parts\/spoken words is good. The mix of electronic sounds and melody in’ Flow’ immediately create pleasant flow. The (sometimes quite slow) vocals melt together with the music. Also, when the vocals are stacked, it is balanced with the gentle music. Despite the quiet flow, there are quite a lot of details in the music, After a few fade outs, this song fades out nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘The Very First Band In Space’ begins with spherical sounds. The turn and the whispering voice that follows this are special. As the music changes, the vocals go with it. The turns flow into each other. The balance between vocals and music remains.
The intro of ‘Mean’ is a bit heavier than expected. The vocals are a little grim, which suits the lyrics and the “spooky” music. Sometimes there are light classical elements woven into it, at other times there is some hecticness. This is more complex than you first think. The atmosphere in ‘Slow Burn’ is calmer, a contrast to the previous song. The organ playing here is lovely! The turn to quiet part is nice. Mike Sherrill is guest drummer, you can hear the pitch differences in the drums. I would have liked to hear that more. ‘Space Rider’ has a mix of electronic sounds and sparkling piano sounds. There is a melange of light classical elements and a fairly calm beat. The (stacked) vocals merge with the music. Tony’s spoken words make it clear why RED32 became the band name. Accompanied by a touch of music, his words come straight from his heart. This last song is an ode to his departed brother-in-law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you might miss the dynamics of a real drum kit. The well-played bass, guitar and organ parts sometimes come off less well because of the beat. Everything is more complex than it first appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
