Nor political, judgmental or anything else, it is simply the musical expression of Dutch band Odessa2. They describe their style as symphonic pop.<br>&#8216;Song for Palestine&#8217; has an atmospheric start, in the background blended with sounds of different voices. A man tells about a crusade centuries ago. The Gregorian-inflected vocals, and the percussion fit into this &#8220;scene&#8221;. This opening track ends the uproar of a group of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Almost non-stop follows &#8216;The Middle Ages&#8217; where the sound folk instruments are intertwined. There are a number of repetitions in melody and rhythm. The flow of this instrumental track remains quite calm. With wordless vocals and sampling, this second track fades out. &#8216;Pope&#8217;s Call&#8217; starts with noise of people and a (church) bell. For a moment there seems to be more rock, but the quiet set-up remains. The vocals are a bit too soft. &#8216;The March of the Knights&#8217; starts with sampling of marching footsteps. Sounds of a flute and percussion mingle with atmospheric music. This transitions into another instrumental section, melody and rhythm are balanced. The division between keys and (bass) guitar is also good in this instrumental track. The twists and turns flow into each other. The atmosphere of a march returns just before the end. &#8216;The Tears of the Left Behind&#8217; is compelling. The match of piano and saxophone is very good. The last note of the piano dies away nicely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even before the compelling start of &#8216;The Walk&#8217; can get under my skin, there is a turn to the similar flow heard earlier. This duet has slightly rocking elements.<br>The intro of &#8216;Fear&#8217; is very cool. The bass tones form a nice contrast between the higher, lighter tones. The sound of swords and horses&#8217; hooves is belongs in &#8216;The Battle&#8217;. This sound stops as soon as the music starts. The melody is nice, but in the music you don&#8217;t hear the grim atmosphere of a battle. The spoken words in &#8216;The Kid&#8217; form a beautiful melange with the organ playing. This is about a boy who died, it touches me. At one point there is a turn to a nice quiet section. For a moment, the song seems to end. The lyrics are half sung, half spoken, you can hear the emotion in the voice. The harmony vocals are a bit sugary. The duet &#8216;Mercy&#8217; is followed by &#8216;The End&#8217;. This last song is instrumental. The build-up to the end is a bit predictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The symphonic elements are hardly present, there could have been more contrast in volume and tempo. The narrative of the (instrumental) songs do not all come alive. Still, the album does form a whole. Although the build-up is not always surprising, the repetitions do provide an even flow. The variations in the music are often gradual. But there is more happening than initially appears. There is a lot of good guitar playing, beautiful organ sounds, not to mention saxophone. These instruments are not &#8220;pushed&#8221; to the foreground much, but still form a fine blend. Ook niet politiek, (ver)oordelend of wat dan ook, het is gewoon de muzikale expressie van de Nederlandse band Odessa2. Zelf omschrijven ze hun stijl als symfo pop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Song for Palestina\u2019 heeft een sferisch start, op de achtergrond vermengd met geluiden van verschillende stemmen. Een man vertelt over een kruistocht van eeuwen geleden. De Gregoriaans geori\u00ebnteerde zang, en de percussie passen in dit \u201cbeeld\u201d. Deze openingstrack eindigt het rumoer van een groep mensen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bijna non-stop volgt \u2018The Middle Ages\u2019 waar in het geluid van folkore instrumenten verweven zijn.<br>Er zijn een aantal herhalingen in melodie en ritme. Klanken van een fluit en percussie mengen zich met sferische muziek. Dit gaat over in een ander instrumentaal deel, melodie en ritme zijn in balans. Ook in dit instrumentale nummer is de verdeling tussen toetsen en (bas)gitaar goed. De wendingen vloeien in elkaar over. De sfeer van een mars keert vlak voor het einde terug. \u2018The Tears of the Left Behind\u2019 is meeslepend. De match van piano-en saxofoon klanken is zeer goed. De laatste toon van de piano sterft mooi weg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nog voordat de meeslepende start van \u2018The Walk\u2019 onder mijn huid kan kruipen is er een wending naar de gelijksoortige flow die eerder te horen was. Dit duet heeft licht rockende elementen.<br>Het intro van \u2018Fear\u2019 is heel gaaf. De bastonen vormen een mooi contrast tussen de hogere, lichtere tonen. Het geluid van zwaarden en paardenhoeven hoort bij \u2018The Battle\u2019. Dit geluid stopt zodra de muziek begint. De melodie is mooi, maar in de muziek hoor je niet de grimmige sfeer van een gevecht. De gesproken woorden in \u2018The Kid\u2019 vormen een mooie melange met het orgelspel. Dit gaat over een jongen die omgekomen is, het raakt me. Op een gegeven moment volgt er een wending naar een mooi rustig deel. Even lijkt het nummer te eindigen. De tekst wordt half gezongen, half gesproken, je hoort de emotie in de stem. De samenzang is een beetje zoet. Na het duet \u2018Mercy\u2019 volgt \u2018The End\u2019. Dit laatste nummer is instrumentaal. De opbouw naar het eind is een beetje voorspelbaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De symfonische elementen zijn nauwelijks aanwezig, er had meer contrast in volume en tempo mogen zitten. Het verhaal van de (instrumentale) nummers komen niet allemaal tot leven. Toch vormen het album wel een geheel. Hoewel de opbouw niet altijd verrassend is, zorgen de herhalingen zorgen wel voor een gelijkmatige flow. De variaties in de muziek verlopen vaak geleidelijk. Maar er gebeurt meer dan in eerste instantie lijkt. Er is veel goed gitaarspel, mooie orgelklanken, en niet te vergeten saxofoon. Deze instrumenten worden weinig naar de voorgrond \u201cgeduwd\u201d, maar vormen toch een prima melange.
