Last year, Andrew “Fletch” Fletcher passed away; he was co-founder of synth-pop band Depeche Mode. Memento Mori’ is the first album released by vocalist Dave Gahan and guitarist\/keyboardist Martin L. Gore together. The inspiration arose at the beginning of the Covid pandemic. The 12 songs describe a variety of moods, including anxiety, joy, obsession and paranoia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening, ‘My Cosmos Is Mine’, immediately captivates: the atmosphere leans towards eerie. The melange of sounds, music and the almost Gregorian-like vocals is special. Despite having quite a lot of layers at times, ‘Memento Mori’ is mostly calm. The beat ranges from delightfully slow, to mid-tempo, and is balanced throughout with the melody. At times, the string instruments merge with the music. At other times, they provide subtle details. Some other details you only hear after a few listens. The songs are carefully constructed and contain enough variation. The (background) vocals consistently come into their own. The lyrics are not easy to fathom, but encourage you to do some thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
