Many bands used the lockdown(s) to release an album. English hard rock band TEN even made two (separate) albums during the pandemic. The first was released about a year ago. The second album, ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’, was released a few weeks ago (via Frontiers Music s.r.l.<\/a> ).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sampled sounds give the start of ‘Look For The Rose’ a spooky atmosphere; the spoken words match this. The instrumental piece that follows this is rousing. Gary Hughes has a clear pronunciation. He has not only the lead, but also the backing vocals. And it all sounds very good, plus he has a very pleasant voice. The guitar solo is screaming, but certainly not too heavy. Parts of the melody soon stick in your head. This opening track has nice details and is very accessible in concept. This is also reflected in the songs that follow. The sound is well distributed throughout the boxes. For hard rock, it may sound a little too clean and\/or too smooth. You might find it a little too poppy. Whatever you think of it, vocals and music consistently form a unit. There is a good division\/interchange between keyboards and guitar, both are regularly heard in the foreground. The rhythm section generally stays more in the background, but do complement it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Parabellum’ means to prepare for war. This theme can be heard back from the spoken words of the intro. The subject matter includes the Ukraine, but historical sound samples can also be heard. Despite the subject, vocals and music don’t get much heavier. The accessibility and uplifting atmosphere remain. This song ends with the sound of an air alert. ‘Something Wicked This Way Comes’ is quiet in concept. Tempo and volume go up a bit and a feel-good vibe emerges. This is enhanced at one point by whistling. The rock is not only in the background here, but also in, for example, ‘New Found Hope’. Also in this rather “sugary” song vocals form a nice blend with the music. The guitar playing provides a touch of spice, also the bass forms a fine contrast. The keyboards are in the foreground during the quiet intro of ‘The Greatest Show On Earth’. Vocals and music remain balanced, as both occasionally change in volume. It all listens through very easily. This last song slowly dies out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although there are few very big surprises, the songs do contain enough variety.
The stacked vocals are sometimes a bit sweet for a hard rock band, this fits in with the “not too heavy” music. Gary’s pleasant voice could also fit right into a great musical. The several layers of vocals and guitar are very good. Sometimes the rhythm is quite calm, another time exhilarating, here and there poppy elements can be heard. This accessible rock, and the way of mixing is suitable for a wide audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
