El Fatso is a Dutch alternative rock band. Their EP ‘Bravado’ was released late last year. Although it’s on the late side for a review, I couldn’t resist the temptation to bring this EP to your attention. A Covid lockdown was used to express frustrations with the (mis)policies. As a result, ‘Bravado’ sounds heavier than their previous work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From the first second, the pace is high. After a nice extended instrumental intro, guitarist Tom Schreuder sings the first phrases of ‘Do or Dread’. You might have already forgotten about the curfew, but you can get the links from it. Although Tom has a clear pronunciation, the high tempo makes it hard to understand him all the time. The splash of (wordless) backing vocals is a nice touch. Drummer Juriaan van der Graaf showcases nice breaks. The subdued played and sung part is lovely. The sound is well spread over the headphones. At times there are pleasantly many strings, guitarists Lennard van den Akker and Thomas Gribnau also take care of that. In addition, bassist Ernst Friele is clearly present. This opening track has a nice, sudden ending. During the intro of ‘One of a Kind’, the sound first seems to come from a little further away. The rousing rock soon emerges. The stacked vocals sound quite sweet at times, this provides a nice contrast to the rousing rock. This song is also well constructed: it contains all kinds of pleasant details, and the combination of lighter sounds with the heavier rock is fine. Vocals and music briefly form a ” delicious cup of noise” at the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘White Noise’ has a surprisingly subdued start. This transitions to a “stoner sound.” Heavier played parts alternate fine with lighter played parts. Both the vocal and instrumental pieces are well constructed. The stacked vocals at the end are surprisingly light. The rocking start of ‘As Above, So Below’ is catchy; the music is more complicated than it seems at first. The vocals have an echoing sound for a while. There are some electronic sounds blended among the rock. Again, lighter and heavier elements form a fine blend. The turn to a minimalist section is very gradual. In the background you can hear sampling of spoken words. The vocals are appropriately dreamy in nature.
Tempo and volume of the music increase. There are several variations in the uptempo piece, but the volume remains about the same. This last song ends with a nice, long-lasting tone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All the instruments together form a good balance, in addition several nice details are played. Covid was the inspiration source, yet this EP is accessible and uplifting.
Played live, these songs are definitely going to provide a good atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
