Rocker John Corabi is known as the frontman of M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce, The Dead Daisies and The Scream, among others. He also wrote ‘Horseshoes and Hand Grenades’, a biography about his youth as well as his career. This flamboyant man was in De Bosuil in Weert (The Netherlands) on Thursday, December 8th. For this acoustic show, the curtain for the main stage was closed. In front of it was a small stage, the hall was cozily decorated with tables, candles, rugs and the such.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

John appeared on stage, the lights dimmed, and after a brief but heartfelt greeting, he immediately began the Union song ‘Love (I Don’t Need It Anymore)’. He had a lot of power in his voice, with a lovely rough edge. Then John told us that he likes to listen to his own voice, so he would talk a little between songs. He did that with funny jokes and or (detailed) anecdotes. Some of the songs he wrote for a woman he was in a relationship with, such as ‘If I had a dime’. The volume of vocals and music was perhaps a little louder than at other acoustic concerts, but it matched the songs. Where he could, he played louder and let out beautiful and\/or raw vocals. Other parts he sang and played more gently, the passion was present in every song. Before the start of ‘If I Never Get to Say Goodbye’, John spoke briefly and seriously, as this is about friends who experienced a shooting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Father, Mother, Son<\/strong>
The anecdote he told for ‘Who’ll Stop the Rain’ contained a number of jokes. Although he told about five minutes, people remained captivated as they listened. After a short silence, “We have the book here” sounded, by which he meant his own book. “I’m not asking you to buy book but a I’m just saying we have here\u2026.”
When John was frontman of The Scream, he wrote ‘Father, Mother, Son’. His fellow band members were not very enthusiastic, their manager saw the potential in it. And rightly so because this is a beautifully sensitive song. Some parts he performed subdued, in other parts you could hear the rougher emotion on his voice. Of course the anecdotes about The Dead Daisies had to be told. He told the story about the origin of the album title \u2018Revolucion’, and John incorporated some jokes in this as well. From this album he played \u2018Something I Said\u2019 He asked our help to sing along the “Yeah Yeah” in ‘Dead and Gone’. Nonverbally he indicated where he needed background vocals from from the audience. The background vocals were modest but perfectly timed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During his anecdotes, John used arm movements. Among other things, he told of the barber who dyed his hair more black than brown, which now made him look like Johnny Depp. His storytelling style was widespread, but funny. Some words such as “organ” have multiple meanings. This he used to play with words for example with “tulips” and “two lips”. The line between funny or wrong is paper-thin, but John did not cross that line. At other times, his use of language was more rough and direct. From M\u00f6tley Cr\u00fce he played ‘Misunderstood’ among others, where his rough voice came into its own. During the beautiful minimalist guitar playing, the audience was so quiet, you could hear a pin drop. Non stop he played ‘Loveshine’, again the fans enjoyed this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
