Doug Woods is well known in the iOS\/iPad music world. He has been working with guitarist Colin Powell for about seven years now. Together they release one or two instrumental albums a year.
“The Chronicles of Mr. Denks and Mr. Klade – The Lost City’ is the second digital album that this duo will release this year. In ‘The Lost City’, Mr Denks and Mr Klade unexpectedly see a portal in Antarctica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘The Discovery’ has a mysterious start, the sound flows nicely back and forth in the headphones. The slow beat is clear and light in tone, and the soundscapes blend in well with the melody. The electronic sounds have been the leading role so far. The start of ‘The Expedition’ is even more mysterious. The beat is faster here, but still light in tone. Piano sounds and guitar playing are added to this. Unnoticed there are quite a few layers in the music. The mix or alternation between light rocking elements and the electronic sounds is fine. Mr Denks and Mr Klade arrive in ‘Antarctica’ after a long journey. The story is not easy to \u201cdepict\u201d with music alone. The music certainly doesn’t sound summery, but it doesn’t give a very icy atmosphere either. On the one hand, it might provide accessibility. On the other hand, you are less drawn into the story. The guitar playing in ‘Snowbound’ forms a good harmony with the other sounds. If you listen with headphones, and you have the music quite loud, some (high) parts sound a bit sharp. Soundscapes and iOS\/iPad music seem to play the leading role in ‘The Portal’. The whole remains mysterious, even when organ sounds are added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘The Lost City’ has a subdued start, certain parts of the melody are repeated. The two detectives have now arrived at the ice cave, the music is less mysterious. This change could be because they see lights in the distance. Subdued saxophone sounds give ‘Another World’ a nice quiet atmosphere. mr. Denks and Mr. Klade have clearly ended up in a different world. The music is different, but because the style fits, there is no dichotomy on the album. The austere sound of string instruments provides a touch of melancholy. The turn to “piano” is surprising, special sounds can be heard through this. ‘An Unexpected Encounter’ has quite a lot of repetitions. Some sounds resemble factory where robotic machines do the work. At a certain point this changes to spherical music with long lasting tones.
Without really seeing the story happen in front of you, you do notice changes in atmosphere. ‘Lost and Found’ has a bit of the atmosphere of a cold cave. But ‘A New Culture’ is more cheerful in nature. In this way we continue through the story, in which there is a good variety of all kinds of instruments or their sounds. Doug and Colin have made up a whole story around their instrumentals again. Or maybe they had written the story first and added music to it. Whatever the order, you have to like the electronic sounds to appreciate their music. The ratio between the whole is fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Rainbow Lightning’ contains warm sounds of guitar and piano, everything is added to this. The whole remains calm until it suddenly changes, the twist is well chosen. Tempo and volume of the music are quite high here, and there seems to be the sound of a Theremin. A while later the music is a bit quieter again. With instrumental numbers it is extra difficult to tell a story. With Treasured Memories, Doug and Coin depict the two traveling men returning home. Doug and Colin have made a nice end to this story. You probably won’t see any images of their journey in front of you. But you don’t have to see the story unfold in front of you to appreciate what you’re listening to. Because the sound quality is good, and that also applies to the blend and variety between the different music styles, sounds and soundscapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
