All five band members of the Austrian art-rock band Blank Manuskript are multi-instrumentalists and also all vocalists. Their extraordinary compositions contain a mix of symphony, psychedelic, jazz, folk and rock. Finally in recent years, the band is getting more exposure, so there are more gigs. Unfortunately, drummer Jakob Sigl could not match it anymore, and with pain in his heart had to say that he will leave the band (after ten years). The concert that took place November 20 in Willem Twee (Poppodium in Den Bosch, The Netherlands) was the very last concert with this sympathetic drummer\/multi-instrumentalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inhalo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The support act was the Dutch band Inhalo. These band members previously played in other bands, for example: A Liquid Landscape, Ivy’s Dream and The Heaven’s Devils. They were support act for bands such as Riverside and Marillion. Inhalo alternates very calm parts with pieces that are heading metal. Earlier this year their debut CD ‘Sever’ was released, and received rave reviews. This album was played in its entirety. It got dark in the venue and through a tape the opening track ‘Omniscient Being’ sounded. In the dark appeared and band members, singer Fons Herder as the last. The first piece of ‘Subterfuge’ is instrumental. Fons’ first phrases sounded mysterious, sometimes a slight echo was added. He showed a lot of expression on his face and used arm movements to add dimension to his words. During instrumental pieces, he was extra agile. Bassist Peter Cats had a fanatical way of playing. Guitarist Susana Raya and Peter had the backing vocals. In ‘Sisyphean’, Roy Willems showcased flawless and fast guitar playing. The change to a subdued part went well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Eventide<\/strong>
Fons announced guest musician Vincent Swierstra, not everything he said was easy to understand. Vincent appeared with his sarangi, which is a Hindustani instrument with many strings. He played the beautiful intro to ‘Eventide’ where only he was highlighted. The audience was impressed by the special sounds of this instrument, as there was complete silence in the hall. After three ticks with the drumsticks, Inhalo fell in. The drumming of Pepijn Gros was good everywhere, including here. Peter and Susana again had the backing vocals. The sound of the sarangi formed a nice melange with it all. This song ended with a short solo by Vincent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In the strongly played parts, Fons sometimes had some difficulty rising above the music. But he is a versatile singer who can also sing subdued. His wordless vocals melded nicely with the music. In addition, some phrases were grunted. Whatever way he sang, he showed and heard a beautiful expression. Both Susana and Roy had beautiful solos. The background vocals were nowhere too much. In short, the audience could definitely appreciate Inhalo. Some had already seen them, for example, at ProgPower 2022 (Baarlo, The Netherlands), and were familiar with their qualities. For others this was a first, but certainly a successful introduction. After their performance, they were surprised with the announcement that they had won an IOPages award. This award was not ready on time to be presented this afternoon, but they hold credit!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blank Manuskript<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Inhalo’s performance was appreciated, but people were mainly coming for Blank Manuskript. Some fans had also seen them the day before at the Parkvilla Theater (Alphen aan den Rijn, The Netherlands). ‘Public Enemy’ was the first song they played, which started with a calm guitar solo by Peter Baxrainer. In the next subdued piece, keyboardist Dominik Wallner seemed to be in a trance. With the guitar still around his shoulder, Jakob Widerin played a beautiful piece on the flute. Dominik had a major part of the vocals, complemented by Alfons Wohlmuth, and Peter. During the subdued part, Jakob Sigl held his drumsticks still for a moment. Again Jakob (Widerin) played transverse flute. In the harmony vocals, the voices together formed a beautiful blend. As if Jakob didn’t play enough already, he first played a bit on the glockenspiel, and then saxophone. All the instruments were perfectly balanced among themselves, and so were the vocals. The music is complex, there are many abrupt twists and turns. Moreover, there are also cross overs to jazz, for example. ‘ The Cult of Birdman’ followed non-stop so that there was an unimaginably beautiful melange of almost 25 minutes. It was Dominik who thanked everyone for making the concert possible, and the fans for coming. Of course he told that it was a very special concert for them because this was the very last concert with drummer Jakob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Himmelfahrt<\/strong>
From the album ‘Himmelfahrt’, they played ‘Twilight Peak’. Again there were and wonderful changes in the music, including an “AC\/DD-like” guitar solo by Peter. Again the harmony singing was perfect. Everything was unimaginably well played and sung. After an uptempo piece with very good saxophone playing, there was a turn to an extended piano solo. Dominik played beautifully gently. You saw the emotion on his face, you felt his emotion. A little later the band members slowly increased the tempo and volume again, but the emotion could still be felt. Dominik played sometimes while standing, sometimes while sitting, but consistently intense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Nonstop followed ‘Dance on the Devils’. The band is so well matched that all the changes, even the rests were played perfectly. There was hardly any non verbal communication to be seen between the band members. They just felt what the other was doing. There was a lot of passion, without “unnecessary show elements.” Except for their “glamour” outfit, which was clearly matched. Besides passion, where the music allowed, the joy was evident. Jakob was a bit hidden behind his cymbals, so it was not noticeable to everyone that he is a multi-instrumentalist too. For some subdued parts, he used sticks with soft ends. It could have been a little more crowded in Willem Twee. But the audience was almost constantly silent, even during the subdued pieces. No wonder because every note was played with preciseness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the War<\/strong>
Because the songs followed each other mostly non-stop, the atmosphere became extra special. During minimalist parts you felt the emotion, sometimes it was even touching. That was certainly true of After the War, Part I and Part II. It is almost unimaginable that a band can play so breathtakingly beautiful, but Blank Manuskript did just that. The men brought out the best in each other.
‘Alone At The Institution’ was one of the songs where Alfons played on his electric double bass. At some points he used the bow, in other parts he played this bass with his fingers. During the uptempo pieces, it was a joyful atmosphere on stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Because they are all multi-instrumentalists, there were a lot of instruments on stage. Some of them very special, which you almost never see; like the Tzouras. For instance, Jakob (Widerin) played this during the intro of ‘Magician’s Dance’. On this Greek mini bouzouki he played mysterious sounds, his vocals complemented this beautifully. The sudden changes were also played perfectly here. During a subdued part a few people talked loudly through it. Slowly the music went faster and faster. Dominik played on his keytar (portable synthesizer). He went to the center of the stage and sat on his knees, then he even played lying down. Moments later the men stood around the drum stage. After this beautiful farewell number, the whole band was emotional, and so were many of the fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

‘Pressure of Pride’<\/strong>
They had barely left the stage or there were already calls for an encore. Dominik explained (with a joke) that they had also written a short radio edit, this was ‘Pressure of Pride’. This is a complex, upbeat song. Dominik and Peter sang part of this together into one microphone. Jakob was playing the saxophone while dancing. You could see from Alfons’ big smile that he also enjoyed it. This enjoyable song had a tight ending. The audience was clearly impressed by the concert. Yet they were also somewhat emotional because this was really the very last performance with drummer Jakob Sigl. Another tour is planned in February, so a new drummer is already in place. Blank Manuskript is performing Feb. 5 in Nieuwerkerk aan de IJssel. (For tickets, here )<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alle vijf de bandleden van de Oostenrijkse art-rock band Blank Manuskript zijn multi-instrumentalist en bovendien allemaal vocalist. Hun bijzondere composities bevatten een mix van symfonie, psychedelisch, jazz, folk en rock. Eindelijk krijgt de band de laatste jaren meer bekendheid, dus zijn er meer optredens. Helaas kon drummer Jakob Sigl het niet meer combineren, en moest met pijn in het hart zeggen dat hij (na tien jaar) de band gaat verlaten. Het concert dat 20 november in Willem Twee (Poppodium in Den Bosch) plaats vond, was het allerlaatste concert met deze sympathieke drummer\/multi-instrumentalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inhalo<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

De supportact was de Nederlandse band Inhalo. Deze bandleden speelden eerder in andere bands, bijvoorbeeld: A Liquid Landscape, Ivy\u2019s Dream en The Heaven\u2019s Devils. Ze waren support act voor bands als Riverside en Marillion. Inhalo wisselt hele kalme delen af met stukken die grenzen aan de metal. Begin dit jaar kwam hun debuut cd \u2018Sever\u2019 uit, en kreeg lovende recensies. Dit album werd integraal gespeeld. Het werd donker in de zaal en via een tape klonk het openingsnummer \u2018Omniscient Being\u2019. In het donker verschenen en bandleden, zanger Fons Herder als laatste. Het eerste stuk van \u2018Subterfuge\u2019 is instrumentaal. De eerste zinnen van Fons klonken mysterieus, soms was er een lichte echo toegevoegd. Hij toonde veel expressie op zijn gezicht en gebruikte armbewegingen om zijn woorden extra dimensie te geven. Tijdens instrumentale stukken was hij extra beweeglijk. Bassist Peter Cats had een fanatieke manier van spelen. Gitarist Susana Raya en Peter hadden de backing vocals. In \u2018Sisyphean\u2019 liet Roy Willems gaaf en snel gitaarspel horen. De verandering naar een ingetogen deel verliep goed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Eventide<\/strong>
Fons kondigde gastmuzikant Vincent Swierstra aan, niet alles wat hij vertelde was goed te verstaan. Vincent verscheen met zijn sarangi, dit is een Hindoestaans instrument met veel snaren. Hij speelde het prachtige intro van \u2018Eventide\u2019 waarbij alleen hij in het licht werd gezet. Het publiek was onder de indruk van de bijzondere klanken van dit instrument, want het was muisstil in de zaal. Na drie tikken met de drumstokken viel Inhalo bij. Het drumwerk van Pepijn Gros was overal goed, zo ook hier. Peter en Susana hadden weer de backing vocals. Het geluid van de sarangi vormde een mooie melange met het geheel. Dit nummer eindigde met een korte solo van Vincent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In de sterk gespeelde delen had Fons soms moeite om boven de muziek uit te komen. Maar hij is een veelzijdige zanger, die ook ingetogen kan zingen. Zijn woordeloze zang smolt mooi samen met de muziek. Bovendien waren enkele zinnen gegrunt. Hoe hij ook zong, hij liet een mooie beleving zien en horen. Zowel Susana als Roy hadden mooie solo\u2019s. De achtergrond zang was nergens te veel. Kortom het publiek kon Inhalo zeker waarderen. Sommigen hadden ze bijvoorbeeld al gezien op ProgPower 2022 (Baarlo), en kende hun kwaliteiten. Voor anderen was dit een eerste, maar zeker een geslaagde kennismaking. Na hun optreden werden ze verrast met de mededeling dat ze een IOPages award gewonnen hadden. Deze award was niet op tijd klaar om hem om deze middag uitgereikt te krijgen. Maar dat houden ze te goed!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blank Manuskript<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Het optreden van Inhalo werd gewaardeerd, maar men kwam toch vooral voor Blank Manuskript. Sommige fans hadden ze de dag ervoor ook al in het Parkvilla Theater (Alphen aan den Rijn) gezien. \u2018Public Enemy\u2019 was het eerste nummer dat ze speelden, dit startte met een rustige gitaarsolo van Peter Baxrainer. In het volgende ingetogen stuk leek toetsenist Dominik Wallner in trance. Met de gitaar nog om de schouder speelde Jakob Widerin een mooi stuk op de dwarsfluit. Dominik had een groot deel van de zang, aangevuld door Alfons Wohlmuth, en Peter. Tijdens het ingetogen deel hield Jakob Sigl zijn drumstokken even stil. Weer speelde Jakob (Widerin) dwarsfluit. In de samenzang vormden de stemmen een prachtige blend. Alsof Jakob nog niet genoeg bespeelde, speelde hij eerst een stukje op het klokkenspel, en vervolgens saxofoon. Alle instrumenten waren onderling perfect in balans, en dat gold ook voor de zang. De muziek is complex, er zijn veel plotselinge twists and turns. Bovendien zijn er ook cross overs naar bijvoorbeeld jazz. \u2018 The Cult of Birdman\u2019 volgende non-stop zodat er een onvoorstelbare mooie melange ontstond van bijna 25 minuten. Het was Dominik die iedereen bedankte voor het mogelijk maken van het concert, en de fans voor het komen. Natuurlijk vertelde hij dat het voor hun een heel speciaal concert was omdat dit het allerlaatste concert was met drummer Jakob.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Himmelfahrt<\/strong>
Van het album \u2018Himmelfahrt\u2019 speelden ze \u2018Twilight Peak\u2019. Ook nu waren en prachtige veranderingen in de muziek, waaronder een \u201dAC\/DD achtige\u201d gitaarsolo van Peter. Weer was de samenzang perfect. Alles was onvoorstelbaar goed gespeeld en gezongen. Na een uptempo stuk met een zeer goed saxofoonspel, volgde er een wending naar een uitgebreide piano solo. Dominik speelde prachtig zacht. Je zag de emotie op zijn gezicht, je voelde zijn ontroering. Even later voerden de bandleden het tempo en volume weer langzaam op, maar de emotie bleef voelbaar. Dominik speelde soms staand, soms zittend, maar constant intens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Nonstop volgde \u2018Dance on the Devils\u2019. De band is zo goed op elkaar ingespeeld, dat alle veranderingen, zelfs de rusten perfect werden gespeeld. Er was nauwelijks non verbale communicatie te zien tussen de bandleden. Ze voelden gewoon wat de ander deed. Er was veel passie, zonder \u201connodige show elementen\u201d. Behalve dan hun \u201cglamour\u201d outfit, die duidelijk op elkaar afgestemd was. Behalve passie was, daar waar de muziek het toeliet, het plezier duidelijk te zien. Jakob zat een beetje verstopt achter zijn cimbalen waardoor het niet voor iedereen opviel dat ook hij multi- instrumentalist is. Voor sommige ingetogen delen gebruikte hij stokken met zachte uiteinden. Het had wat drukker mogen zijn in Willem Twee. Maar het publiek was bijna constant stil, ook tijdens de ingetogen stukken. Geen wonder want iedere noot was met precisie gespeeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the War<\/strong>
Doordat de nummers elkaar grotendeels non-stop opvolgde, werd de sfeer extra speciaal. Tijdens minimalistische delen voelde je de emotie, soms was het zelfs ontroerend. Dat gold zeker voor After the War, Part I en Part II. Het is bijna onvoorstelbaar dat een band zo adembenemend mooi kan spelen, maar Blank Manuskript deed dat. De mannen haalden het beste in elkaar naar boven.
\u2018Alone At The Institution\u2019 was \u00e9\u00e9n van de nummers waarbij Alfons op zijn elektrische contrabas speelde. Op het ene moment gebruikte hij de strijkstok, in andere delen bespeelde hij deze bas met zijn vingers. Tijdens de uptempo stukken was het een vrolijke sfeer op het podium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Omdat het allemaal multi- instrumentalisten zijn, stonden er heel wat instrumenten op het podium. Soms ook hele bijzondere, die je bijna nooit ziet; zoals de Tzouras. Jakob (Widerin) speelde hier onder ander op tijdens het intro van \u2018Magician’s Dance\u2019. Op deze Griekse mini bouzouki speelde hij mysterieuze klanken, zijn zang sloot hier mooi bij aan. De plotselinge veranderingen werden ook hier perfect gespeeld. Tijdens een ingetogen deel praatte een enkeling er luid doorheen. Langzaam ging de muziek steeds sneller en sneller. Dominik speelde op zijn keytar (draagbare synthesizer). Hij liep naar het midden van het podium en ging op zijn knie\u00ebn zitten, vervolgens speelde hij zelfs liggend. Even later stond de mannen rondom het drum podium. Na dit mooie afscheidsnummer was de hele band ge\u00ebmotioneerd, en menig fan ook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Pressure of Pride<\/strong>
Ze hadden het podium amper verlaten of er werd al om een toegift geroepen. Dominik legde (met een grapje) uit dat ze ook een korte radio edit hadden geschreven, dit was \u2018Pressure of Pride\u2019. Dit is een complex, vrolijk nummer. Dominik en Peter zongen een deel hiervan samen in \u00e9\u00e9n microfoon. Jakob stond al dansend saxofoon te spelen. Je zag aan de big smile van Alfons dat ook hij genoot. Dit leuke nummer heeft een strak einde. Het publiek was duidelijk onder de indruk van het concert. Toch was men ook wat ge\u00ebmotioneerd omdat dit echt het allerlaatste optreden was met drummer Jakob Sigl. In februari staat er weer een tour gepland, dus er is al een nieuwe drummer. Blank Manuskript staat 5 februari in Nieuwerkerk aan de IJssel. (Tickets, hier te bestellen)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
