As It Is&#8217; is Duncan&#8217;s sixth album. The songs discuss such topics as forgiveness, responsibility and temptation. Music styles include minimalist, folk, fusion and rock. Several guest musicians participate, including John Helliwell ( (Supertramp) and Dave Bainbridge (Iona).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Heaven&#8217; starts with the sound of a little bell and then &#8220;Hello.&#8221; If you have the volume on low, you can barely hear it. The soft music matches this lovely. After a rest, a special twist follows. The repeating keyboard sounds remain, even after another change. You hear the pitch differences of the drum kit well. The turns keep coming, always there is a nice melange and\/or alternation of the different instruments. Like bass, keyboards, violin, viola, flute and saxophone. Despite all these differences, it does feel like a whole. The first vocal is after about 7:40 minutes, the emotion on the voice is well heard. The wordless (stacked) vocals are as minimalistic as the music. Less is more definitely applies here. There are a number of repetitions, yet there are subtle changes. Everything continues to captivate me, over and over again. When beautiful, warm guitar playing is added, the wordless vocals can still be heard in the background. There are subtle changes and countless details in the music, each time you hear something new. The turn to more pace and volume is somewhat unexpected, but the balance remains. This intriguing opening track ends with a very slow fade out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the songs are complex but captivating. I discuss them very briefly: In &#8216;This Day,&#8217;, words are half sung, half spoken. Vocal parts are interspersed with extended instrumental pieces. String instruments and piano form an unusual interplay in &#8216;Fissures Of Men.&#8217; The vocals in &#8216;FinishLine&#8217; briefly become grim. That a subdued acoustic song can be surprising is proven by &#8216;Unnecessary Kindness.&#8217; In &#8216;Three Sixteen&#8217; cool bass playing forms a nice contrast with the high notes. The sound of a steam train returns at the end, this is nicely incorporated into the headphones. Rhythm and melody of &#8216;Lead Us Not&#8217; give a slight, summer atmosphere, and is therefore perhaps the most accessible song. In the short &#8216;Fissures Of Men (reprise),&#8217; the good sound quality once again stands out. As a result, both the bright violin playing, and the somber sounds come out beautifully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can also interpret the lyrics of &#8216;Valediction (Power And Glory)&#8217; in several ways. It could be about a relationship. And question whether the other party is really invested in it, with the questions gradually becoming more insistent. After a subdued part, there is a musical calm. In a shriek sounds pain, despair. After a beautifully extended instrumental piece, this last song slowly extinguishes. At the end, you hear a telephone &#8220;ringing&#8221; (again).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vocals and music constantly form a unity. The sound is very good and, moreover, nicely spread over the headphones. Because of the great contrast in volume, sometimes it takes a while to find the right loudness, especially when listening with headphones. There are numerous changes, not only in volume and rhythm, but also in styles. Each time you discover something new, such as musical rests, sampling and details. Regularly there are many layers, even in the subdued parts. Non-Christians will probably not even notice that the Lord&#8217;s Prayer is the foundation of the album, as some of the words used (such as shepherd) have multiple meanings. Moreover, everything does not sound churchy. &#8216;On Earth, As It Is&#8217; is a fantastic album, and also includes some improvisations. De nummers gaan bijvoorbeeld over vergeving, verantwoordelijkheid en verleiding. De muziekstijlen zijn onder andere minimalistisch, folk, fusion en rock. Er doen diverse gastmuzikanten mee, zoals John Helliwell ( (Supertramp) en Dave Bainbridge (Iona).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Heaven\u2019 start met het geluid van een zacht belletje en dan \u201cHello\u201d. Als je het volume zacht hebt staan, hoor je het amper. De zachte muziek sluit hier mooi bij aan. Na een rust volgt een bijzondere wending. De herhalende keyboard klanken blijven, ook na een volgende wending nog even. Je hoort de toonhoogte verschillen van het drumstel goed. De wendingen blijven komen, steeds is er een mooie melange en\/of afwisseling van de verschillende instrumenten. Zoals bas, keyboards, (alt) viool, altviool, fluit en saxofoon. Ondanks al deze verschillen, voelt het wel als \u00e9\u00e9n geheel. De eerste zang is na zo\u2019n 7.40 minuten, de emotie op de stem is goed te horen. De woordeloze (gestapelde) zang is net zo minimalistisch als de muziek. Less is more is hier absoluut van toepassing. Er zijn een aantal herhalingen, toch zijn er subtiele veranderingen. Het geheel blijf me boeien, iedere keer opnieuw. Als er mooi, warm gitaarspel bijkomt, is de woordeloze zang op de achtergrond nog te horen. Er zijn subtiele veranderingen en talloze details in de muziek, steeds hoor je weer iets nieuws. De wending naar meer tempo en volume is vrij onverwacht, maar de balans blijft. Deze intrigerende openingstrack eindigt met een hele langzame fade out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alle nummers zijn complex maar boeiend. Ik bespreek ze h\u00e9\u00e9l kort: In \u2018This Day\u2019 zijn woorden half zingend, half pratend. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met uitgebreide instrumentale stukken. De strijkinstrumenten en piano vormen een ongewoon samenspel in \u2018Fissures Of Men\u2019. De zang in \u2018FinishLine\u2019 wordt korte tijd grimmig. Dat een ingetogen akoestisch nummer verrassend kan zijn, bewijst \u2018Unnecessary Kindness\u2019. In \u2018Three Sixteen\u2019 vormt gaaf basspel een mooi contrast met de hoge tonen. Het geluid van een stoomtrein komt op het einde terug, dit is mooi verwerkt in de koptelefoon. Ritme en melodie van \u2018Lead Us Not\u2019 geven een lichte, zomerse sfeer, en is daarom misschien wel het meest toegankelijke nummer. In het korte \u2018Fissures Of Men (reprise)\u2019 valt de goede geluidskwaliteit nogmaals op. Hierdoor komen zowel het heldere vioolspel, als de sombere klanken mooi naar voren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ook de tekst van \u2018Valediction (Power And Glory)\u2019 kun je op meerdere manieren opvatten. Het zou kunnen gaan over een relatie. En vraag of de andere partij er echt in investeert, waarbij de vragen geleidelijk indringender worden. Na een ingetogen deel is er een muzikale rust. In een kreet klinkt pijn, wanhoop. Na een prachtig uitgebreid instrumentaal stuk dooft dit laatste nummer langzaam uit. Op het laatst hoor je (weer) een telefoon \u201crinkelen\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zang en muziek vormen constant een eenheid. Het geluid is zeer goed en bovendien prima verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Door het grote contrast in volume, is soms even zoeken naar de juiste geluidssterkte, vooral als je met koptelefoon luistert. Er zijn talloze veranderingen, niet alleen qua volume en ritme, maar ook in stijlen. Iedere keer ontdekt je iets nieuws, zoals muzikale rusten, sampling en details. Regelmatig zijn er veel laagjes, ook in de ingetogen delen. Niet Christenen zullen waarschijnlijk niet eens merken dat het Onze Vader het uitgangspunt van het album is, want een aantal gebruikte woorden (zoals herder) hebben meerdere betekenissen. Bovendien klinkt het geheel niet kerkelijk. \u2019On Earth, As It Is\u2019 is een fantastisch album, en bevat ook enkele improvisaties.
