Even before anyone had heard of Corona or Covid, the Joost de Lange Band released the album ‘ \u2018Lonesome Wolf’. Like so many bands, this power trio did not sit still during the many lockdowns. Singer\/guitarist Joost wrote the ten songs for the album Hypnotized, which will be released Oct. 28. This will also feature a mix of rock, blues, and grunge. Besides cool guitar solos by Joost, there is plenty of room for the rhythm section with Ramses Donvil on drums and bassist Mitchell Goor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Won’t follow’ has a pleasant rocking intro that turns into a catchy rhythm. Immediately I tap along with my foot. Joost has a pretty clear pronunciation, so you can partially sing along with the chorus after a few listens. The instrumental piece has some nice guitar playing. You also hear a nice piece of drumming by Ramses. You could already hear Mitchell’s bass well in the opening track, but in ‘Mixed emotions’ the bass is really thickly played. The instrumental piece has several surprises. Played live, this is definitely going to provide a good vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The title track has a beautiful slow and softly played intro, the atmosphere is mysterious. Joost sings appropriately slowly. Although he sings quite clearly, it would have been nice if you could have read along in a lyric booklet. The various changes in vocals and music are generally gradual. During the cool guitar solo, the rhythm section is steady. The sound is well distributed over the headphones. During a subdued piece, the vocals are very shortly (almost) solo, well done. The build-up to the end is slow, but intriguing. ‘Love, fear and uncertainy’ has a pleasant flow. Again Joost knows how to touch me with his guitar playing. Not only vocals and music constantly complement each other, also instrumentally everything is fine. Fans know that Ramses can play the cymbals with beautiful details, he shows that again here. Clearly a lot of work went into composing, because this song also has a cool outro. The songs were probably written with live performances in mind. They contain catchy parts will thrive live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short, quiet intro of ‘Take me higher’ transitions a little strangely to rock. The tempo is not very fast. But guitar and bass sound nice and heavy at times. During a super instrumental part, Joost plays all kinds of nice sound effects. After a quieter bit, tempo and volume are pushed up again. The backing vocals are subtle, but nicely added. Also ‘Rush’ has a nice intro, uplifting parts and a wonderful guitar solo. This last song extinguishes with guitar playing very nicely, slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These ten songs do not have a “standard verse-rephrase” structure. Each song has nice changes and details in the music. Moreover, the intros and outros are also well thought out, and there is a pleasant distribution over the headphones. The bass and drums form a steady base on certain parts. This allows Joost to ” tear ” through them wonderfully with his guitar. Beyond that, Ramses and Mitchel are much more than “just” rhythm section. This trio reinforces each other, everything serving the whole. The sound on “Hypnotized” is sometimes a little more dull than on “Lonesome Wolf,” but that’s okay with this music. The Joost de Lange Band has clearly found its own style, you can hear the same ingredients on both albums: nice bass grooves, dynamic drumming and of course great guitar playing. After a few listens, the songs slowly but surely stick in your head. With this basis as a starting point, the Joost de Lange Band has made another fine album with ‘Hypnotized’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
