Deni Marinovic received his first electric guitar as a teenager, and taught himself to play the guitar, now he is a multi-instrumentalist. About four years ago his EP ‘Freedom Bells’ was released, this was (incl artwork) almost a one man project. Dreamland’ is a full CD, again he has played almost everything himself. Only the drumming was done by Eric Tuznik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Don’t Forget To Dream’ has a spherical start, then you hear the warm sounds of acoustic guitar. Meanwhile, the spherical elements have died out, and there are multiple layers of music. The percussion is nicely added, after which rock-metal influences are added. Various twists and turns follow, the balance remains. Moreover, the make use of the division in the headphones is lovely. There are nice details, some you only hear after a few listens. This optimistic opening track ends spherically. Because of the sounds of wind, percussion and guitar playing, you can hear at the start of ‘Great Plains Vagabond’ that this song is inspired by westerns. The rhythm is exhilarating, the bass is pleasantly present. Again there is the ultimate balance between rhythm and melody. There are also details of guitar, among others, plus one or more voices. The changes flow seamlessly into each other. The sound of the drums is nicely full and round. The sudden ending is well chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deni has a passion for the mountains with their peaks and canyons, this is why he created ‘Over The Mountains’. There is a melange and alternation of acoustic and electric guitar playing. Sometimes a few piano sounds are sprinkled through. The rhythm section forms a very good basis. The sounds of string instruments are nicely warm and realistic. At the end, the track has a pleasantly relaxed atmosphere, and so the whole thing extinguishes nicely slowly. It gives me the relaxed feeling of being outside and watching it slowly get dark. In ‘Temples Are Made Of Sand’ you can hear Arabic influences. The details in the percussion are sometimes subtle, but clear in sound, the flow of the rhythm is pleasant. The Arabic influences are nicely interspersed with rock\/metal. In the background you can hear the occasional sound of “string instruments”, the bass grooves are cool. Some elements return maybe a little too often, but the harmony between everything remains. ‘Moonlight Shadows’, is a very good song inspired by Ennio Morricone. This ties in nicely with ‘Arizona Sunset’, in which Deni plays the flute. The build up to the end is special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Blues For Gary’ is different from the previous songs, because you can clearly hear the influences of Gary Moore here. Yet the songs fit together, well done. The bass is steady throughout the song. The guitar playing is superb and even the rests are well played. This is followed by ‘Lagrimas De Esperanza (Part 1)’ and ‘Lagrimas De Esperanza (Part 2)’. The first part starts very calmly, yet there are plenty of details. The vocals are occasionally inserted as instruments. It seems to end, but it is a rest followed by a turn. A short time later, part 2 follows, again the rock\/metal elements are perfectly balanced with the quieter parts. The same goes for the division between rhythm and melody. The build up to the end is great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially in the powerfully played parts, the sound of the cymbals is a bit underwhelming. Furthermore, the timbre of the various drums is well done. The same goes for all the other instruments. Sometimes there are quite a few layers in the music, moreover there are many twists and details. It’s complex in structure, but it’s relaxing to listen to. Incredible that it’s almost a one-man project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
