‘The Dead Daisies’ is a super rock band, finally these giants can do a huge tour again. Their only show in the Netherlands took place on June 11 at De Bosuil in Weert. Well before the doors opened, there was already a long queue of fans waiting in front of the door.
Even before the support act Guy Swinnen Band (from Belgium) started it was pretty crowded in the hall. Singer\/guitarist Guy Swinnen has been active in the music world for over forty years, but became best known through The Scabs. Already with the opening song ‘Don’t you know’ you could see that the other band members also have a good dose of experience, it all looked so natural. Guy of course had the lead vocals, the other band members had the backing vocals, the voices coloured together beautifully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bob Dylan<\/strong>
The band also played some covers, including ‘Senor’ by Bob Dylan. Guy began with subdued vocals and guitar playing. Energetic guitarist David Piedfort played the heavier and faster pieces with a lot of passion, a nice contrast to Guy’s calm but driven performance. Bassist Bart Buls had a subdued way of performing, his love for the music was also visible. Because of the roadie, a chat from Guy, or a drum solo from Marcus Weymaere, the guitar changes went almost unnoticed. The band played a varied set, ‘Forgive me’ is from the first solo album, but ‘Without you’ is a new song, which will be on the new album. David played here with a guitar with twelve strings. ‘Tired eyes’ was the last song. It was a good performance, but people were definitely waiting for the rock of ‘The Dead Daisies’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dead Daisies<\/strong>
When the lights in the hall went out, a tape with the sound of thunder started, meanwhile the rockers appeared on the still dark stage. Cheering erupted from the audience, they had been waiting for this for so long! With ‘Unspoken’, the start was still fairly “quiet”, yet the energy was immediately palpable. Bassist Glenn Hughes reached the high notes effortlessly. He and guitarists Doug Aldrich and David Lowy (nicknamed Thunder from Down Under) played wireless. Thus they could easily use the entire stage, and they did. There was so much happening on stage that you almost ran out of eyes. The rockers had plenty of interaction with each other, and they also involved drummer Brian Tichy. Regularly Doug and David were playing side by side, both with their feet far apart, they are still limber. Musically and vocally it was all great, these guys are still bubbling with energy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radiance<\/strong>
After ‘Rise up’ and ‘Dead and gone’ the new single ‘Radiance’, was played.
The real fans already know this song, for others it might have been new. This song was also appreciated by the audience. During ‘Mexico’ Doug put his plectrum on one of the cymbals, when Brian hit it, the plectrum flew in the air and was caught by Doug. On the uptempo piece, he was at the very front of the stage, his fingers “flew” across the strings at lightning speed. Glenn and David also interacted with the fans in this way. If they didn’t stick the neck of their (bass)guitar in the air, it regularly went above the heads of the fans. Between songs Glenn asked a few times, “How you’re feeling?” In furthermore, he said several times, “We love you!” The energy was and remained high, as if age has no hold over them. Glenn’s high-pitched vocals remained good, as did all the bass and guitar playing. Brian did absolutely nothing to diminish that, in addition he twirled regularly.
He treated us to an extended solo with several tempo changes. Especially in the slower pieces you could hear the pitch differences of the drums. In the faster pieces the lights flashed, he gave a nice show away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mistreated<\/strong>
After the fantastic drum solo, the other “Daisies” returned. Doug started with a modest solo, then the tempo and volume slowly increased. Spontaneously the fans sang along loudly with the phrase: “I know I’ve been mistreated”. Glenn’s introverted vocal solo was very good, then he effortlessly rose above the music with high-pitched vocals. During the wordless vocals he walked further away from the microphone, together with the reverb on his voice it gave a special effect. Rightly, there was applause in between. This beautiful Deep Purple song had a nice, “thundering” ending. These rockers continued to play, with songs like “My fate” and “Holy ground” full throttle. The whole thing was maybe a little too loud, but well balanced. Also during the encore the energy kept splashing. Tiredness seemed out of the question. They rocked until the last second, these guys seem forever young.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glenn thanked the fans with the words: “Thank you for coming tonight. It means the world to be back with you, and to see you again. We love you!”
Afterwards The Daisies gratefully accepted a well-deserved applause.
Fans can look back on a very successful evening, it was more than worth the sometimes long journey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018The Dead Daisies\u2019 is een super rockband, eindelijk kunnen deze grootheden weer een grote tour maken. Hun enige optreden in Nederland vond plaats op 11 juni in De Bosuil in Weert. Ruim voordat de deuren opengingen, stond er al een lange rij fans te wachten voor de deur.
Nog voordat de support act Guy Swinnen Band (uit Belgi\u00eb) begon was het al behoorlijk druk in de zaal. Zanger\/gitarist Guy Swinnen is al meer dan veertig jaar actief in de muziekwereld, maar werd vooral bekend door The Scabs. Al bij het openingsnummer \u2018Don\u2019t you know\u2019 zag je dat de overige bandleden ook een flinke dosis ervaring hebben, het zag er allemaal zo natuurlijk uit. Guy had natuurlijk de leadzang, de overige bandleden hadden de achtergrondzang, de stemmen kleurden mooi bij elkaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bob Dylan
De band speelde ook enkele covers, waaronder \u2018Senor\u2019 van Bob Dylan. Guy begon met ingetogen zang en gitaarspel. De energieke gitarist David Piedfort speelde de zwaardere en snellere stukken met veel passie, een mooi contrast met de rustige, maar gedreven performance van Guy. Bassist Bart Buls had een ingetogen manier van performen, ook bij hem was de liefde voor de muziek zichtbaar. Door de roadie, een praatje van Guy, of door een drum solo van Marcus Weymaere verliepen de gitaarwissels bijna ongemerkt. De band speelde een gevarieerde set, \u2018Forgive me\u2019 komt van het eerste solo album, maar \u2018Without you\u2019 is een nieuw nummer, dat op het nieuwe album gaat komen. David speelde hier met een gitaar met twaalf snaren. \u2018Tired eyes\u2019 was het laatste nummer. Het was een goed optreden, maar men wachtte toch wel op de rock van \u2018The Dead Daisies\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Dead Daisies<\/strong>
Toen de lichten in de zaal doofden, startte een tape met een het geluid van donder, ondertussen verschenen de rockers op het nog donkere podium. Er klonk gejuich van uit de zaal, hier had men al zo lang op gewacht! Met \u2018Unspoken\u2019 was de start nog redelijk \u201crustig\u201d, toch was de energie meteen voelbaar. Bassist Glenn Hughes haalde de hoge tonen moeiteloos. Hij en de gitaristen Doug Aldrich en David Lowy (bijgenaamd Thunder from Down Under) speelden wireless. Zodoende konden ze met gemak het hele podium gebruiken, en dat deden ze. Er gebeurde zoveel op het podium dat je bijna ogen te kort kwam. De rockers hadden volop interactie met elkaar, en daarbij betrokken ze ook drummer Brian Tichy. Regelmatig stonden Doug en David zij aan zij te spelen, beiden met de voeten ver uit elkaar, ze zijn nog steeds lenig. Muzikaal en vocaal was het allemaal geweldig, deze mannen bruisen nog steeds van de energie!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Radiance<\/strong>
Na \u2018Rise up\u2019 en \u2018Dead and gone\u2019 werd de nieuwe single \u2018Radiance\u2019, gespeeld.
De echte fans kennen dit nummer al, voor anderen was het misschien nieuw. Ook dit nummer werd gewaardeerd door het publiek. Tijdens \u2018Mexico\u2019 legde Doug zijn plectrum op \u00e9\u00e9n van de cimbalen, toen Brian erop sloeg, vloog de plectrum in de lucht en werd gevangen door Doug. Bij het uptempo stuk stond hij helemaal aan de voorkant van het podium, zijn vingers vlogen razendsnel over de snaren heen. Ook Glenn en David zochten op deze manier de interactie met de fans op. Als ze de hals van hun (bas)gitaar niet in de lucht staken, ging deze regelmatig over de hoofden van de fans heen. Tussen de nummers door vroeg Glenn een paar keer: \u201cHow you\u2019re feeling?\u201d Bovendien ze hij een aantal keer: \u201cWe love you!\u201d De energie was en bleef hoog, alsof de leeftijd geen vat op hen heeft. Glenn\u2019s hoge zang bleef goed, hetzelfde geldt voor al het bas en-gitaarspel. Brian deed daar absoluut niet voor onder, daarnaast twirlde hij regelmatig.
Hij trakteerde op een uitgebreide solo waar verschillende tempowisselingen in zaten. Vooral in de iets langzamere stukjes hoorde je de toonhoogte verschillen van de drums. In de snellere stukken flitste het licht volop, hij gaf een mooi show weg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mistreated<\/strong>
Na de fantastische drum solo keerden de overige \u201cDaisies\u201d terug. Doug startte met een ingetogen solo, daarna gingen tempo en volume langzaam omhoog. Spontaan zongen de fans luidkeels mee met de zin: \u201cI know I’ve been mistreated\u201d. De ingetogen vocale solo van Glenn was erg goed, daarna kwam hij met hoge zang moeiteloos boven de muziek uit. Tijdens de woordeloze zang liep hij verder van de microfoon weg, samen met de galm op zijn stem gaf dit een bijzonder effect. Terecht klonk er tussentijds applaus. Dit prachtige Deep Purple nummer had een mooi, \u201cdonderend\u201d einde. Deze rockers bleven, met nummers zoals \u2018My fate\u2019 en \u2018Holy ground\u2019 vol gas spelen. Het geheel was misschien iets te hard, maar wel goed in balans. Ook tijdens de toegift bleef de energie er vanaf spatten. Van vermoeidheid leek geen sprake. Ze rockten er tot en met de laatste seconde flink op los, deze mannen lijken \u201cforever young\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Glenn bedankte de fans met de woorden: \u201cThank you for coming tonight. It means the world to be back with you, and to see you again. We love you!\u201d
Daarna namen De Daisies dankbaar een welverdiend applaus in ontvangst.
