The prog album ‘You have it all’ is an extension of the EP ‘Spirals and Portals’, which Lobate Scarp released in 2019. From that came the singles ‘Nothing Wrong’ (remixed) and ‘Beautiful Light’. These are interwoven within the new album to create more cohesion. Several very well-known guest musicians participate. Like Ryo Okumoto (Spock’s Beard) and Jimmy Keegan (Spock’s Beard, Pattern-Seeking Animals)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the beginning you can hear the pitch differences of the drums, pretty soon after that there is a little less variation in the percussion. But that gives room for various key and string instruments and the bass, among others. In the background you can hear beautiful details of the cymbals and other percussion. This comes out even better with headphones than through the speakers. There seems to be a build up to the end. But a minimalist part follows, here the combination of the musical instruments and the way they are played is intriguing. The intriguing continues in ‘Nothing Wrong’. The first sentences are sung quite low, the color of this is special. The (stacked) vocals and music are well balanced. Moreover, the layers in the music are well distributed. The guitar playing is wonderful, but that is really true for everything in this track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘In the Night I’ is much shorter than expected, and the ending feels a bit strange. In part of ‘Life-Line’ the rhythm is tight, here you hear little difference in pitch of the different drums. Still, there is certainly plenty of dynamic in the drumming. The bass is pleasantly present, forming a nice contrast with the high notes of, for example, the keyboard. Again, the ending is engagingly composed and played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lobate Scarp manages to remain constantly captivating: the twists and turns in ‘You Have It All’ are sublime, the whole thing is fantastically distributed over the headphones. There are many details, the way instruments merge, combine or alternate is special. Rhythms sometimes seem to go against each other, but the balance remains. There are pleasant instrumental parts, including a lot of (bass) guitar and keyboards. Again, it’s the string instruments that come forward nicely. This title track contains numerous twists and turns. Some parts are a bit sweet, other parts are prog rock.
With a beautifully subdued piece, this epic seems to end, but there is another very small piece attached to it, which is surprising! ‘In the Night II’ is also very short, and a bit sweet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In ‘Beautiful Light’ the influences of Spock’s Beard can be heard. This is another cool track, with fantastic (stacked) vocals. During the first part of ‘Our Test Tube Universe’ you can hear the rhythm section in the foreground. The keyboard work is super, you definitely recognize Ryo Okumoto in that. The transition to the subdued part is very good, and several twists and turns follow. This cool track has a nice sudden ending. ‘Flowing Through the Change’ is a track in five parts. During more than 17 minutes a lot of beautiful things pass by. Dynamic drumming, great bass grooves and compelling guitar play. The string instruments are played in a good variety and always form a perfect melange with the whole, the same goes for the keyboards. The vocals are in constant balance with the music. This epic has a cool, extended build up to the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These nine tacks have quite a few layers at times, yet it doesn’t feel complex. There are lots of details, and you keep hearing new things. ‘You have it all’ is one of the best, if not the best album of 2022 so far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
