Phil Bee has been on stage at home and abroad for over 30 years. He has won several awards and reached the (semi) finals of several singing competitions. Last year he was the winner of ‘The Voice Senior’. Just before the Dutch winter lockdown of 2021, the 11-piece Phil Bee band (including horn section) performed in Tivoli Vredenburg. This energetic concert was recorded, the result lies in front of me. The CD ‘Live at Tivoli Vredenburg’ will be released on May 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Come Together’ starts with guitar playing and Phil’s beautiful voice, which has a lovely rough edge to it. When the other instruments join in I tap along with the tight rhythm. The horns are a nice addition, the organ playing is delicious and the guitar playing is superb. The background vocals melt into the whole. All the layers in vocals and music are well distributed on the headphones. In short: this is a good opening track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phil sings the ballad ‘I love you more than you’ll ever know’ straight from the heart, which makes me believe every word he sings. The horn players play beautifully softly and the cymbals and drums are also played with care. The compelling saxophone playing gets applause. The music is pleasantly slow, this is a great version. The track list is well varied, as ‘Got to get better in a little while’ is a funky track. Again, the changes in rhythm are well played. The instrumental piece is nice and long, you can hear among other things cool guitar play and a wonderful bass solo to which the audience responds enthusiastically. If you listen without headphones, you automatically turn up the volume. This energetic performance lasts almost 11 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Sunday Morning’ is one of Phil’s own songs. The lyrics are not too complicated, so you can sing along with parts of it pretty soon. The pleasantly slow tempo makes you feel the atmosphere of a Sunday morning with a slow start. Again, there is magnificent saxophone playing. Phil sings, up to and including the last phrase, convincingly. ‘Superstition’ is an upbeat retro song. By adding organ and guitar, it has become its own version. The audience claps along, it’s nice to hear this live performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the intro of ‘Tennessee Whiskey’ I am immediately touched by the acoustic guitar playing of Guy Smeets and by Phil’s voice, which sometimes has a slightly rough edge. The voices of Natasja Den Toom Fleur Janssens form a nice blend with the whole. But sometimes it takes just too much attention away from Phil’s beautiful vocal outbursts. During an instrumental piece, the guitar playing is compelling. At the end there is a minimalist played and sung part. The final words “Tennessee Whisky” with additional backing vocals are very good. It’s always nice when an encore can be heard on a live CD. Here it is the funky ‘Big legged Woman’. I naturally move with the flow of this last song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a few songs the backing vocals are a bit predictable, or on the edge of being too much or not too much. But the ladies do have beautiful voices. The balance of musical instruments between each other and music versus vocals is very good. You can tell by everything that there was a wonderful atmosphere during this live performance. Let’s hope there will never be another and lock-down. Because Phil and his band deserve to tour a lot at in The Netherlands and abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
