Although American blues-rock singer\/guitarist Eric Steckel is in his early thirties, his first performance was some twenty years ago. Even before he was eighteen he played at De Bosuil<\/a> in Weert. Since then he has performed here regularly. Due to Covid, fans had to wait much longer to see him again. The concert could finally take place on Wednesday, May 4. The doors of De Bosuil opened a few minutes after eight o’clock due to Remembrance Day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

When the lights went out in the hall it had become pleasantly crowded. Eric greeted the audience with: “Are you ready?”. Immediately ‘Solid Ground’ was started. During the instrumental piece, Eric walked to the front center of the stage, and treated the audience with his first solo. Again, he was well lit. He bent backwards, ‘head in neck’. As if by himself, his fingers moved across the strings. Even when he played faster, it seemed like it took no effort on his part. It is still impressive to see his dexterity, especially from so close.
The fans responded enthusiastically to his skills. Jos Kamps’ cool bass tones were good, but not excessively audible. He was agile as always and he visibly enjoyed himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Grandview Drive<\/strong>
Drummer Henri van den Berg wasn’t hiding behind the cymbals, he was nicely lit up, so he was easily visible. He and Jos provided the funky intro to ‘Born under a bad sign’. Soon Eric joined in with guitar, this became a nice extended instrumental piece. Vocal and instrumental parts alternated. In one of the instrumental parts Eric and Jos faced each other, they brought out the best in each other. Henri enjoyed the great interplay of these two men. This flowed into a minimalist part, in which Eric sang almost entirely solo, the audience was mostly silent. Again tempo and volume went up, with Eric and Jos continuing to challenge each other. So this became a great, energetic version that lasted more than ten minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

‘Can’t you see’ comes from his latest album ‘Grandview Drive’. The start of this is subdued, the atmosphere in the hall changed nicely along with Eric’s sensitive vocals. Only he was put in the light during the intro. The moment the tempo and volume of the music increased, the stage was fully lit again. So the lighting was, also on this night, very good. Various tempo and volume changes followed, all of which were played fantastically. This was partly due to the non-verbal communication of Eric, Jos and Henri kept a close eye on him. This was a great piece of teamwork that was greatly appreciated by the fans. Eric was pleased with the applause and with his band, he praised Jos and Henri several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Dismantle the Sun<\/strong>
Also, ‘When ignorance turns to bliss’ comes from the new album, unlike ‘Day drinking’ which comes from the album ‘Dismantle the Sun’ (2012). The latter was a short but powerful version. In a number of other songs, Eric soloed extensively, sometimes turning up the volume knob quite a bit. This made the contrast with the beautiful minimalist pieces all the greater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We’re still friends’ has a wonderfully compelling intro, but soon the chatter in the hall numbed. This made the pleasantly slow flow even better. Eric seemed to be completely one with the music and forgot about everything and everyone around him. Despite not seeing much happening at these moments, a special vibe was tangible. At one point Eric played completely solo, Henri and Jos looked at it with admiration. After his solo, he yelled, “Make some f*cking noise for the boys!” After the applause and cheers, the men joined in again. Shortly thereafter, Jos and Henri played together, and Eric enjoyed from the “sidelines” the way this twosome was challenging each other. Next, Eric went towards Jos. Sometimes they imitated each other, at other times they played together. Once again, what they showed was fantastic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Best with you<\/strong>
After this exciting song it was time for the quieter ‘Empty promises’. Again, the tempo and volume changes were played flawlessly. Some pieces were minimalistic. Towards the end, they played faster and faster. Quite deservedly, this older song has become an audience favourite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

From the manner in which the end of ‘Tennessee’ was built up, you felt that this was the last song. Of course there was an encore, this was ‘Best with you’. For those who don’t have the new album yet, it was an unknown song. But of course that didn’t matter, because this was also ear candy. After almost two hours of non-stop playing, Eric Steckel said goodbye to his fans. A few minutes later he appeared at his merchandise stand, after which he took plenty of time for his fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hoewel de Amerikaanse bluesrock zanger\/gitarist Eric Steckel begin dertig is, was zijn eerste optreden zo\u2019n twintig jaar geleden. Nog voor zijn achttiende speelde hij in De Bosuil<\/a> in Weert. Sindsdien treed hij hier regelmatig op. Door Covid hebben de fans veel langer moeten wachten om hem weer te kunnen zien. Het concert kon eindelijk doorgaan op woensdag 4 mei. De deuren van De Bosuil gingen in verband met Dodenherdenking enkele minuten na acht uur open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Toen de lichten in de zaal doofden was het gezellig druk geworden. Eric begroette het publiek met: \u201dAre you ready?\u201d. Meteen werd er gestart met \u2018Solid Ground\u2019. Tijdens het instrumentale stuk liep Eric naar middenvoor van het podium, en trakteerde de aanwezigen op zijn eerste solo. Ook hier werd hij goed in het licht gezet. Hij boog achterover, hoofd in de nek. Als vanzelf bewogen zijn vingers over de snaren. Ook als hij sneller speelde, leek het alsof het hem geen moeite kostte. Het blijft indrukwekkend om zijn vingervlugheid te kunnen zien, zeker van zo dicht bij.
De fans reageerden enthousiast op zijn kunnen. De gave bastonen van Jos Kamps waren goed, maar niet overdadig te horen. Hij was zoals altijd beweeglijk en hij genoot zichtbaar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Grandview Drive<\/strong>
Drummer Henri van den Berg zat niet verstopt achter de cimbalen, hij werd mooi in het licht gezet, dus hij was goed zichtbaar. Hij en Jos zorgden voor het funky intro van \u2018Born under a bad sign\u2019. Als snel kwam Eric erbij met gitaar, dit werd een mooi uitgebreid instrumentaal stuk. Vocale en instrumentale delen wisselden elkaar af. In \u00e9\u00e9n van de instrumentale delen stonden Eric en Jos tegenover elkaar, ze haalden het beste in elkaar naar boven. Henri genoot van het geweldige samenspel van deze twee mannen. Dit vloeide uit naar een minimalistisch deel, waarin Eric bijna helemaal solo zong, het publiek was overwegend stil. Weer gingen tempo en volume omhoog, waarbij Eric en Jos elkaar bleven uitdagen. Zodoende werd dit een geweldige, energieke versie die ruim tien minuten duurde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Can\u2019t you see\u2019 komt van zijn nieuwste album \u2018Grandview Drive\u2019. De start hiervan is ingetogen, de sfeer in de zaal veranderde mooi mee met de gevoelige zang van Eric. Alleen hij werd tijdens het intro in het licht gezet. Op het moment dat tempo en volume van de muziek toenamen, werd het podium weer helemaal verlicht. Het licht was dus, ook op deze avond, zeer goed. Er volgden diverse tempo en volumewisselingen die allemaal fantastisch werden gespeeld. Dit kwam mede door de non-verbale communicatie van Eric, Jos en Henri hielden hem dan ook goed in de gaten. Dit was een knap staaltje teamwork dat zeer gewaardeerd werd door de fans. Eric was blij met het applaus en met zijn band, hij roemde Jos en Henri een aantal keer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Dismantle the Sun<\/strong>
Ook \u2018When ignorance turns to bliss\u2019 komt van het nieuwe album, in tegenstelling tot \u2018Day drinking\u2019 dat van het album\u00a0\u2018Dismantle the Sun\u2019 (2012) komt. Dit laatste was een korte maar krachtige versie. In een aantal andere nummers soleerde Eric uitgebreid, waarbij hij de volumeknop soms flink open draaide. Des te groter was het contrast met de mooie minimalistische stukken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2018We\u2019re still friends\u2019 heeft een prachtig meeslepend intro, al snel verstompde het geklets in de zaal. Hierdoor kwam de aangenaam langzame flow nog beter tot zijn recht. Eric leek helemaal \u00e9\u00e9n te zijn met de muziek en alles en iedereen om zich heen te vergeten. Ondanks dat je op deze momenten niet veel zag gebeuren, was er een bijzondere vibe voelbaar. Op een gegeven moment speelde Eric helemaal solo, Henri en Jos keken vol bewondering toe. Na zijn solo riep hij: \u201cMake some f*cking noise for the boys!\u201d Na het applaus en gejuich speelden de mannen weer mee. Kort daarna speelden Jos en Henri samen, en genoot Eric vanaf de \u201czijlijn\u201d van de manier waarop dit tweetal elkaar aan het uitdagen was. Vervolgens ging Eric tegenover Jos staan. Soms speelden ze elkaar na, op andere momenten speelden ze samen. Wat ze lieten horen was wederom fantastisch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Best with you<\/strong>
Na dit zinderend gespeelde nummer was het tijd voor het rustigere \u2018Empty promises\u2019. Ook hier werden de tempo en volumewisselingen foutloos gespeeld. Sommige stukken waren minimalistisch. Naar het einde toe werd er steeds sneller gespeeld. Heel terecht is dit oudere nummer uitgegroeid tot publiekslieveling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Aan de manier waarop het einde van \u2018Tennessee\u2019 werd opgebouwd voelde je dat dit het laatste nummer was. Natuurlijk kwam er een toegift, dit was \u2018Best with you\u2019. Voor wie het nieuwe album nog niet heeft, was het een onbekend nummer. Maar dat gaf natuurlijk niet, want ook dit was ear candy. Na bijna twee uur non-stop spelen nam Eric Steckel afscheid van zijn fans. Een paar minuten later verscheen hij bij zijn merchandise stand, waarna hij nog ruim de tijd nam voor zijn fans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
