Twenty-five years ago singer\/multi-instrumentalist Oliver R\u00fcsing founded the neo prog band Karibow. After 2.5 years of forced “break”, this German band could finally perform again. This took place on Sunday, May 1 in ’t Blok in Nieuwerkerk aan de IJssel (thee Netherlands). The concert started with the sound of a roaring engine. The arrival of the band members was a bit casual. The first song was ‘Bodhisattva’. At times Oliver had a little trouble finding just the right pitch and enough volume in his singing. Maybe that was because during this first song the volume of the bass was a bit too loud. Bassist Felix J\u00e4ger clearly felt very relaxed on stage. Guitarist Philipp Dauenhauer showed very good guitar play, his backing vocals were a bit lower.
‘The raining silence’ starts with a catchy rhythm. Oliver accentuated the words he was singing with his arms. During an instrumental piece, he started playing next to Felix. The latter clearly felt the music. He had no microphone, but sang parts of the text automatically. The sound of the bass, meanwhile, was good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renaissance<\/strong>
Drummer Gerald Nahrgang played tight and forte where possible, but calm where he had to.
Keyboardist Guido Seifert was not present, but of course the keys could be heard. Here and there some small mistakes were played. On the other hand, many tempo and volume changes were played well. Occasionally, Oliver spied on a sheet of paper for the lyrics. This was not disturbing at all. Especially with the high notes, and louder vocals, he had some trouble this time. During the intro of ‘Renaissance’ Oliver asked (non verbally) to clap along, which they did. Especially during this part his singing was not flawless, but you could see and hear his passion. The moment he sang a piece completely solo, it sounded good. Philipp has a modest way of performing, but what can he play! But that was the case for the whole band, even the rests in the cool ‘The North wall tale’ were played well. The atmosphere on stage was and remained good, you could see the men enjoying themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home of cain<\/strong>
After the break, Oliver returned alone for an acoustic set “The band is taking a nap,” Oliver said. He sang ‘Home of cain’ not quite perfectly. Not everything went flawlessly on guitar either. Because he sang with emotion, he did manage to convince. He asked for percussion, so the fans clapped along to the rhythm, then on his command people sang along. Between the acoustic songs Oliver joked around, the atmosphere was very friendly. During his singing you could see and feel his devotion to the music. After a good (improvised) medley, Oliver said he was going to wake up the band. The band came back on stage and Oliver went to change clothes. Meanwhile, Felix talked through the time in a very funny way. There were several laughs at what and how he told things. Once he got dressed, Oliver explained something about the upcoming song, to which Gerald said : “You’re announcing the wrong song.”
This was one of the laughable, but amiable situations. Oliver went to change his clothes again and Felix continued to joke around. Finally, Oliver announced the right song ‘Wrecked B.I.L’.
After another “change of clothes” by Oliver and jokes by Felix, the band played ‘The Impossible’, a song about immortality. At times, Oliver’s singing and performance were almost theatrical, without being acting. He sang and moved from his heart, his passion. He performed the spoken words on his knees. Gerald played his cymbals beautifully softly during the subdued piece. This epic was played in an impressive way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

E.G.O.<\/strong>
During the catchy ‘Remember’ the fans could not stand still. Also on stage the men were clearly enjoying themselves. After a bow and a group photo the men left the stage. As expected, “We want more” was shouted, and of course Karibow returned. E.G.O was the encore. The sampled voice gave it something extra, moments later it was Oliver who spoke the words. For a few more moments one could enjoy Karibow, so the good guitar playing of Philippe, the dynamic drumming of Gerald. And of the wonderful flow of the six-string bass of Felix, not to forget the passion of Oliver. The minimalist pieces where he sang almost solo were very beautiful. This was a fine finale to a very enjoyable concert.
The amiable atmosphere remained even after the concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karibow zorgde voor een gemoedelijke zondagmiddag in \u2019t Blok<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Vijfentwintig jaar geleden richtte zanger\/multi-instrumentalist Oliver R\u00fcsing de neo prog band Karibow op. Na 2,5 jaar gedwongen \u201cpauze\u201d kon deze Duitse band eindelijk weer optreden. Dit vond plaats op zondag 1 mei in \u2019t Blok in Nieuwerkerk aan de IJssel. Het concert startte met het geluid van een ronkende motor. De opkomst van de bandleden verliep een beetje nonchalant. Het eerste nummer was Bodhisattva. Op sommige momenten had Oliver een beetje moeite om precies de goede toonhoogte en genoeg volume in zijn zang te vinden. Misschien kwam dat omdat bij dit eerste nummer het volume van de de bas iets te luid was. Bassist Felix J\u00e4ger voelde zich duidelijk heel relaxed op het podium. Gitarist Philipp Dauenhauer. liet zeer goed gitaarspel horen, zijn achtergrondzang was iets minder.
\u2018The raining silence\u2019 start met een pakkend ritme. Oliver versterkte de woorden die hij zong met armgebaren. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk, ging hij naast Felix spelen. Deze laatste voelde duidelijk de muziek. Hij had geen microfoon, maar zong delen van de tekst vanzelf mee. Het geluid van de bas was inmiddels goed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Renaissance<\/strong>
Drummer Gerald Nahrgang speelde strak en forte waar het kon, maar rustig waar het moest.
Toetsenist Guido Seifert was er niet bij, maar natuurlijk waren de toetsen wel te horen. Her en der werden er wat kleine foutjes gespeeld. Aan de andere kant, veel tempo en volumewisselingen werden goed gespeeld. Af en toe spiekte Oliver even op een briefje voor de songteksten. Dit was totaal niet storend. Vooral met de hoge tonen, en luidere zang had hij deze keer wat moeite. Tijdens het intro van \u2018Renaissance\u2019 vroeg Oliver (non verbaal) om mee te klappen, dat deed men. Vooral hier was zijn zang niet zuiver, maar je zag en hoorde zijn passie. Op het moment dat hij een stukje helemaal solo zong, klonk het wel goed. Philipp heeft een bescheiden manier van performen, maar wat kan hij spelen!. Maar dat gold voor de hele band, zelfs de rusten in het gave \u2018The North wall tale\u2019 werden goed gespeeld. De sfeer op het podium was en bleef goed, je zag de mannen genieten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Home of cain<\/strong>
Na de pauze kwam Oliver alleen terug voor een akoestische set \u201cDe band doet even een dutje\u201d, zei Oliver. Hij zong \u2018Home of cain\u2019 niet helemaal zuiver. Ook op gitaar ging niet alles perfect. Doordat hij met emotie zong, wist hij wel te overtuigen. Hij vroeg om percussie, dus klapte de fans mee in de maat, daarna zong men op zijn commando mee. Tussen de akoestische nummers door maakte Oliver een grapje, de sfeer was heel gemoedelijk. Tijdens zijn zang zag en voelde je zijn bezieling voor de muziek. Na een goed (ge\u00efmproviseerde) medley zei Oliver dat hij de band even wakker ging maken. De band kwam terug op het podium en Oliver ging zich even omkleden. Ondertussen pratte Felix de tijd op een hele leuke manier vol. Er werd een aantal keer gelachen om wat en hoe hij de dingen vertelde. Eenmaal omgekleed legde Oliver iets uit over het komende nummer, waarop Gerald zei :\u201dJe kondigt het verkeerde nummer aan.\u201d
Dit was \u00e9\u00e9n van de lachwekkende, maar gemoedelijke situaties. Oliver ging zich nogmaals omkleden en Felix ging verder met grappen maken. Uiteindelijk kondigde Oliver het goede nummer \u2018Wrecked B.I.L\u2019 aan. Na een volgende \u201comkleed-partij\u201d van Oliver en grappen van Felix speelden de band \u2018The Impossible\u2019, een nummer over onsterfelijkheid. Op sommige momenten waren Olivers zang en performance bijna theatraal, zonder dat hij aan het acteren was. Hij zong en bewoog vanuit zijn gevoel, zijn passie. De gesproken woorden vertolkte hij op zijn knie\u00ebn. Gerald bespeelde zijn cimbalen mooi zacht tijdens het ingetogen stuk. Deze epic werd op indrukwekkende wijze gespeeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

E.G.O<\/strong>.
Tijdens het pakkende \u2018Remember\u2019 konden de fans niet stil blijven staan. Ook op het podium hadden de mannen er duidelijk plezier in. Na een buiging en een groepsfoto verlieten de mannen het podium. Zoals verwacht werd er \u201cWe want more\u201d geroepen, en natuurlijk kwam Karibow terug. E.G.O was de toegift. De gesampelde stem gaf het iets extra\u2019s, even later was het Oliver die de woorden sprak. Nog even kon men genieten van Karibow, dus van het goede gitaarspel van Philippe, het dynamische drumwerk van Gerald. En van de heerlijke flow van de zes-snarige bas van Felix, en niet te vergeten van de bezieling van Oliver. De minimalistische stukjes waarin hij bijna solo zong waren heel mooi. Dit was een prima afsluiting van een heel gemoedelijke concert.
De gemoedelijke sfeer bleef ook na het concert bestaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
