Vermillion Plains is a new grunge band from the Netherlands. The line up is quite special. Because founder Kevin Klarenbeek plays with his parents Annemiek and Corr, they have been on stage for twenty years. The lyrics and music were written by Kevin, his own life was his inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intro to ‘Etched my brain’ invites you to turn up the volume. The bass is pleasantly present. Kevin’s sober, low vocals come out well in the softer part. When he sings louder, his voice has a very raw sound. If you appreciate the the genre, then you can definitely enjoy his voice. Vocals and music fit together. The changes in tempo of vocals and music are good. However, the build-up is a bit predictable. During an instrumental piece, Kevin shows off his skills on the guitar. This opening track extinguishes nicely. ‘Forty three’ is an up-tempo song. In the strongly played parts, the sound of the cymbals is a bit wobbly, but the drums sound good overall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In ‘Vermilion Plains’ it is noticeable that at couple of sentences the last word is stretched out a bit longer. It seems that first the music was written, and then the lyrics. In the first part of the title track, lyrics and music don’t feel balanced everywhere. Towards the end, the balance is definitely there. But then there are quite a few repetitions in lyrics and music. For use on a CD, this is just a little too much. During a live show, this would be a good opportunity to give a live show some extra energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When Kevin sings fast (as, for example, in ‘Daily bad day’), it is at the expense of understandability. The lyrics are clearly printed in the booklet, so you can read along. Where the sentences are repeated several times, it is easy to sing along loudly. Kevin uses his voice in different ways. In “Then why kiss? His voice sounds quite monotonous.
And in ‘Support the wrong’ his vocals are sometimes stacked, while just before the end he releases a cool, raw scream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His raw voice returns in ‘Without permission’. He sings his words full of emotion\u2026. Feelings of fear and\/or frustration fit the music in which chaos also seems to be interwoven. Later, the instrumental piece is a little calmer for a moment. Kevin’s emotions return, and then suddenly this song ends. Also in ‘Hole in the table’, emotions pass by. Here there seems to be an interplay between frustration and dejection. The sound of the cymbals is now mostly clear. ‘Thank God I woke up’ and ‘It’s allright, it’s OK’ give a more optimistic atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a mid-tempo piece, ‘Dutch Summer’ has a surprising turn to a subdued played section. Here the lyrics come into their own. A few more fairly gradual turns follow. Kevin’s voice sounds gloomy, you can almost see him in front of you, crying in the summer rain. This last song ends too unexpectedly. Other than that, all the songs end well. In general, the sound of these 15 songs is a bit dingy, but that fits into the whole. During the subdued pieces, the sound of the cymbals is nice and clear. In the strongly played parts this is sometimes a bit disappointing. This is not due to the qualities of Corr, because he drums with good dynamics. Annemiek plays cool grooves. The division between raw and mellow vocals is fine. The stacking of the vocals sometimes gives just that little extra. Plus the guitar playing is good. ‘Vermilion Plains’ proves that grunge still has a future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
