Beaux Gris Gris was founded by Greta Valenti, they play a mix of blues\/blues rock, soul and funk. The 2020 European tour could not take place due to Covid. Like many other bands, they decided to make a new album. And it was about time, because their debut album ‘Love and Murder’ was released over 3 years ago. The new album, ‘Good times end times’, was launched at the end of March. With Stephen Mildwater as the new bass player.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opening track ‘Fill Me Up’ is rousing. Greta has a beautiful voice with a clear pronunciation. The lyrics are not too complicated, so you can soon sing along. The guitar solo is by her husband Robin Davey (The Hoax). This is a delicious portion of blues, with tight drumming by Mark Barrett and sparkling piano sounds by Emma Jonson. After an up-tempo piece, the ending is beautiful, but sudden. ‘Bungalow Paradise’ is more mellow, now Greta’s voice is quite choky. Robin’s guitar playing is more subdued here. So vocals and music remain in balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The songs are easy to listen to and stick in your head. The same goes for ‘Alone’. The sound of the rhythm section comes across a bit duller. The vocals are nicely stacked. This mid-tempo song ends softly. Vocals and music are well distributed on headphones, which can also be heard in ‘Trouble Is Coming’. This song also invites you to sing along. It has a pleasant flow,. There are nice details, including in the percussion. Robin’s solo could have been a bit longer. During a delicious instrumental piece, Greta sometimes uses her voice as an instrument. Again, she reveals quite a lot of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The nice rattling sound in ‘Is This The Blues’ comes from the vibraslap. This is, in short, a metal U-shaped percussion instrument. Tapping the round button creates the rattling sound. Greta narrates part of her lyrics, making it even more clear how versatile her voice is. The blues can certainly be heard here, but in Beaux Gris Gris’s own style. Emma sprinkles in some piano notes in her own way. This nicely built up song has a special ending, and moves almost non-stop to the cheerful ‘Gris Gris’. This is one of the atmospheric songs during live shows, and will undoubtedly become a crowd favourite. But also at home, the cheerful sounds and the uplifting tempo can be enjoyed. The “horns” could have been a bit more prominent. The vocals are nicely stacked, this fits well with the slightly simpler structure. ‘Watching The World Falling Down’ is also a feel good song with a slightly simpler structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Lucid’ has a nice subdued instrumental intro, Greta’s vocals, and Robin’s fantastic solo tie in nicely with this. Vocal parts and instrumental pieces alternate. This last song ends with a beautiful instrumental piece, in which Greta uses her voice as an instrument. It’s a pity the CD ends, because I would have liked to listen to this for a lot longer. ‘Good times end times’ really only has one flaw, and that is its length. Just over half an hour is too short for the ear candy of Beaux Gris Gris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
