Death appears in novels, poetry and music. So also on the album &#8216;The Cold Embrace of the Light&#8217;. Besides doom and prog metal, Threads of Fate also uses symphonic elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first few seconds of &#8216;Beneath A Starless Sky&#8217; are very quiet, then sober piano playing follows. The percussion is suitably slow. The sound of string instruments melts nicely into the whole. The music increases slightly in intensity and volume, the scream is nicely inserted. In itself, the division between the metal and symphonic elements is good. But some of the symphonic parts sound just a bit too shrill. &#8216;Moonrise&#8217; has a nice drum intro. Now and then an echo is added to Jon&#8217;s clear vocals. It&#8217;s a good thing he has a fairly clear pronunciation, because the lyrics are printed so tiny that they are barely readable. The blend of metal and lighter music remains good. This also applies to the division between the uptempo and the quieter parts. The guitar playing is wonderfully &#8220;screaming,&#8221; the melody is pleasant and the rhythm exhilarating. With that, the whole thing is captivating but accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first piece of &#8220;A Ghostly Portrait&#8221; is instrumental. The vocals may sound a bit macabre, but that fits in with the whole. Following that, the vocals are grim, and then clean. The clean vocals sounds higher than expected. Despite the contrasts in vocals, the harmony remains.<br>In a minimalist played part, the sound of the cymbals is beautiful. The wordless vocals are a nice addition. Next, the tempo suddenly increases. This is, up to the slowly fading end, a well constructed song. The intro of &#8216;The Horrors Within&#8217; is well composed, but the sound of the classical elements is too bleak. The metal is played tight, a grunt sounds, and the &#8220;string instruments&#8221; mix lightly through it all. There are several changes, quiet parts are occasionally mixed with metal influences. The quiet, clean vocals are regularly interspersed with some grunted phrases. The &#8220;wordless choir&#8221; can be heard far in the background and melt with the music in such a way that they are barely noticeable. The sound of large drums is warm, the rhythm unexpectedly calm. This flow persists for a while, suddenly there is a twist to up tempo metal. The build up to the end is surprising due to the piano sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The well-constructed songs contain plenty of twists and turns. Some flow into each other, others are sudden. Although death plays an important role, lyrics and music are certainly not dark. The title track is accessible and less complex. During the up-tempo pieces in &#8216;Love Held Hands With Hatred&#8217;, there is fairly little dynamics. Here, the balance with classical music is not everywhere correct. At the end, the number of repetitions is too much. So this song is a little disappointing, but that is compensated by the quiet, touching &#8216;Ashes&#8217;. This last song fades out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the sound of the orchestral elements had been warmer, some of the songs would have had cinematic allure. Most of the songs are well or very well constructed. There are good contrasts in tempo, volume and pitch. In addition, there are plenty of details, which come into their own with headphones. But it is also wonderful to listen to this album through the speakers with the volume turned up nice and high. Threads of Fate is a fairly young band, and The Cold Embrace of the Light their debut (full) CD. De dood komt voor in romans, po\u00ebzie en muziek. Zo ook op het album \u2018The Cold Embrace of the Light\u2019. Behalve doom en prog metal, maakt Threads of Fate ook volop gebruik van symfonische elementen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De eerste paar seconden van Beneath A Starless Sky\u2019 zijn heel zacht, dan volgt sober pianospel. De percussie is passend langzaam. Het geluid van strijkinstrumenten smelt mooi samen met het geheel. De muziek neemt iets in intensiteit en volume toe, de schreeuw is mooi ingelast. Op zich is de verdeling tussen de metal en de symfonische elementen goed. Maar sommige symfonische onderdelen klinken net iets te schel. \u2018Moonrise\u2019 heeft een leuk drumintro. Af en toe is er een echo toegevoegd aan de heldere zang van Jon. Het is maar goed dat hij een vrij duidelijke uitspraak heeft, want de songteksten zijn zo klein afgedrukt dat ze nauwelijks leesbaar zijn. De melange van metal en lichtere muziek blijft goed. Dit geldt ook voor de verdeling tussen de uptempo en de rustigere delen. Het gitaarspel is heerlijk gillend, de melodie is aangenaam en het ritme opzwepend. Daarmee is het geheel boeiend maar toegankelijk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het eerste stuk van \u2018A Ghostly Portrait\u2019 is instrumentaal. De zang klinkt misschien een beetje macaber, maar dat past in het geheel. Aansluitend is de zang grimmig, en vervolgens clean. De cleane zang is hoger dan verwacht. Ondanks de contrasten in zang, blijft de harmonie bewaard.<br>In een minimalistisch gespeeld deel is het geluid van de cimbalen mooi. De woordeloze zang is een mooie aanvulling. Vervolgens neemt het tempo ineens toe. Dit is tot en met het langzaam wegstervende einde, een gaaf opgebouwd nummer. Het intro van \u2018The Horrors Within\u2019 is prima gecomponeerd, maar het geluid van de klassieke elementen is te kil. De metal is strak gespeeld, er kinkt een grunt, en de \u201cstrijkinstrumenten\u201d mengen zich luchtig door het geheel. Er zijn diverse veranderingen, rustige delen worden af en toe vermengd met metal invloeden. De rustige, cleane zang wordt regelmatig afgewisseld met enkele gegrunte zinnen. De \u201cwoordeloze koorzang\u201d is ver op de achtergrond en smelt dusdanig met de muziek samen dat het amper opvalt. De klank van grote trommels is warm, het ritme is onverwacht kalm. Deze flow blijft even bestaan, opeens is er een twist naar up tempo metal. De opbouw naar het einde is door de pianoklanken verrassend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De goed opgebouwde nummers bevatten volop wendingen. Sommige vloeien in elkaar over, andere zijn plotseling. Hoewel de dood een belangrijke rol speelt, zijn tekst en muziek zeker niet duister. De titeltrack is toegankelijk en wat minder complex opgebouwd. Tijdens de up-tempo stukken in \u2018Love Held Hands With Hatred\u2019 is er vrij weinig dynamiek. De balans met klassieke muziek is hier niet overal goed. Op het laatst is het aantal herhalingen te groot. Dit nummer valt dus wat tegen, maar dat wordt goed gemaakt door het rustige, ontroerende \u2018Ashes\u2019. Dit laatste nummer dooft uit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Als het geluid van de orkestrale elementen warmer was geweest, hadden enkele nummers filmische allure gehad. De meeste nummers zijn goed tot zeer goed opgebouwd. Er zijn goede contrasten in tempo, volume en toonhoogte. Bovendien zijn er volop details, die met koptelefoon goed tot zijn recht komen. Maar het is ook heerlijk om dit album via de speakers te luisteren met de volumeknop lekker ver open. Threads of Fate is een vrij jonge band, en The Cold Embrace of the Light hun debuut (full) cd.
