Time\u2019s Forgotten is a prog rock\/metal band from Costa Rica founded in 2004 by keyboardist Juan Pablo Calvo. Their previous singer, Francisco Longhi, was replaced by Priscilla Ruiz. Therefore, ‘Shelter’, their new album, will sound much different from the previous ones. The songs on ‘Shelter’ do not form a story, yet this is a concept album. The lyrics are about the search for individuality in a city. Modern society is sometimes chaotic. People are looking for places, persons or situations, so that they can feel protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘New Dawn’ is a mysterious, instrumental opening. ‘City’ has a quiet start, there is reverb on the vocals. During an instrumental part, rock\/metal elements come in, with clear, wordless vocals in between. Then Priscilla sings her words more powerfully. There are fine tempo and volume changes in vocals and music. Electronic elements are nicely alternated with rock\/metal. There is a good balance between keyboards and bass\/guitar.
Drummer Jorge Sobrado adapts his hitting power well, however during the forte (=louder) played parts it’s noticeable that his drumheads are strained quite a bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the beginning, ‘Cycle #248’ has a quiet flow. Various changes in tempo and\/or volume follow. One moment the (bass)guitar are pleasantly heavy, later there is beautiful, compelling guitar play. Some instrumental pieces are nicely subdued and contain light classical elements. After a piece with more power, this song has a nice ending. Especially in ‘Defiant’, the vocals stand out in a positive way. You can hear both power vocals and subdued parts. Everything is sung by Priscilla. The songs are well constructed, yet have a catchy structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the start of ‘Accident of Evolution’, it feels like you miss a second of the intro. This feeling is reinforced by the quiet start of the previous songs and the catchy intro of this song. The whispering words are well added. The same goes for the lighter tones that swirl through the heavier music. An instrumental piece is followed by a sudden and tightly played ending. ‘Waking Up’ is quiet and slightly classically oriented, but it does not touch me as I would have liked, partly because the sound is a little too chilly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After nice sounds of acoustic guitar, the fade out of ‘Ascension’ is a bit of a shame.
‘Outsider’ starts with a mix of electronic sounds and metal. The drums have a rather chilly sound, but the sound of bass\/guitar is nice and heavy. At times, the vocals sound passionate. The minimalistic part has beautiful compelling guitar play, nicely complemented by the wordless vocals. The contrasts that follow give nice depth. After the atmospheric start of ‘Moments of Clarity’, the first sentences come across as a bit artificial, which makes the emotion less well conveyed. But again, the changes are well chosen. ‘The Road Home’ is a beautiful song, but I am not intensely moved by it. Especially the subdued part in the middle, would have touched me deeply, if the sound had been a bit warmer. What is positive is the good vocal outburst, the guitar playing and the beautiful ending. Finally, ‘Sleepless’ as a calm closing track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The short, quiet instrumental tracks are not intense enough in sound and structure to really impress. At several moments the sound of vocals and music is a bit too fluffy. Because of this, the twists and turns have just too little impact. A pity, because the songs are generally well constructed. Of course, Priscilla’s voice is different from Francisco’s (the previous singer). Comparing them is hardly possible, but her voice is very versatile. It may be a drastic, but well-chosen change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
