There are more bands with the name Lucifer. I’m not talking about the Dutch band from the ’70s. But about the Swedish hard rock\/ metal band, which is inspired by ’70s music of Black Sabbath and Blue \u00d6yster Cult, among others. In 2014 Lucifer was founded by Johanna Sadonis (The Oath), those days she was living in Berlin. Lucifer has already played more than 200 shows, they played not only in Europe, but also in US, Canada and Japan.
In 2015, their debut album called Lucifer I was released. This was followed by Lucifer II (2018) and Lucifer III (2020). The release tour for this album was already postponed twice by Covid. Lucifer used the tour stop to record the successor. This one is called, not unexpectedly, Lucifer IV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first seconds of ‘Archangel Of Death’ are pleasantly spooky, the sequel is nice and exciting. When the music softens a bit, Johanna starts singing. Vocals and music form a good harmony. The sound is retro, yet vocals and music also come out well when you turn up the volume. This also applies to the instrumental part. The vocals are sometimes stacked up, there is a delicious portion of drumming. The tambourine can be heard regularly in the background. This cool opening track promises a lot! The dingy sound creates a bit of a morbid atmosphere, fitting ‘Wild Hearses’. At other times, the whole sounds a bit friendlier, which forms a nice contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Equality between men and women is important to Lucifer. That’s why the lyrics of ‘Crucifix (I Burn For You)’ (indirectly) mention the freedom of women. Again, there is a good intro and a catchy rhythm. The balance between melody and rhythm remains good, as does the division between vocal and instrumental parts. There is plenty of variation in both. Moreover, there are some nice details, which you do not notice the first time you listen to it. ‘Mausoleum’ has a remarkably different start because of the organ sounds. Soon the catchy rhythm and the sometimes heavily played strings take over. Here you can also hear the tambourine, this is later played by Nicke. In the second half, there are a few nice twists. The end dies away perfectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then comes the surprisingly small played ‘The Funeral Pyre’. You can hear the crackles in the background, it fits the retro sound of the 70’s. On the other hand, it also takes some attention away from this short, introverted instrumental. In the fantastically built up track ‘Nightmare’, is sung about Epiales. This Greek god is the spirit and personification of nightmares. In several lyrics, Egyptian or Greek gods are mentioned. This also applies to ‘Phobos’, the Greek god of fear, which is why this song is about a friend whose life is dominated by fears. With this in mind, the slowly dying end of this last song becomes even more special. Far in the background, for a moment, you can hear a church bell ringing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sound is well distributed over the headphones, the dingy sound is nowhere too overpowering. The balance between vocals and music is constant, and so are the instruments. Moreover, there are plenty of twists and details. ‘Lucifer IV’ is accessible and pleasantly exhilarating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Er zijn meer bands met de naam Lucifer. Ik heb het niet over de Nederlandse band uit de jaren \u201970. Maar over de Zweedse hard rock\/ metal band, die ge\u00efnspireerd is door \u201870\u2019s muziek van onder andere Black Sabbath en Blue \u00d6yster Cult. In 2014 werd Lucifer opgericht door Johanna Sadonis (The Oath), zij woonde toen nog in Berlijn. Lucifer heeft al meer dan 200 shows gespeeld, ze speelden niet alleen in Europa, maar ook in VS, Canada en Japan.
In 2015 kwam hun debuutalbum met de naam Lucifer I uit. Daarna volgde Lucifer II (2018) en Lucifer III (2020). De release tour voor dit album werd al twee keer uitgesteld door Covid. Lucifer gebruikte de tour stop om de opvolger op te nemen. Deze heet, niet onverwacht, Lucifer IV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De eerste seconden van \u2018Archangel Of Death\u2019 zijn klinken aangenaam \u2018spooky\u2019, het vervolg is lekker opzwepend. Als de muziek iets zachter wordt, begint Johanna te zingen. Zang en muziek vormen een goede harmonie. Het geluid is retro, toch komen zang en muziek ook goed tot hun recht als je het geluid wat harder zet. Dat geldt ook voor het instrumentale deel. De zang is soms gestapeld, er is een heerlijk portie drumwerk. De tamboerijn is regelmatig op de achtergrond te horen. Deze gave openingstrack belooft veel goeds! De groezelige sound cre\u00ebert een beetje een morbide sfeer, passend bij \u2018Wild Hearses\u2019. Op andere momenten klinkt het geheel wat vriendelijker, dit vormt een mooi contrast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De gelijkheid tussen mannen en vrouwen is belangrijk voor Lucifer. Vandaar dat de in tekst van \u2018Crucifix (I Burn For You)\u2019 de vrijheid van vrouwen (indirect) aanbod komt. Weer is er een goed intro en een pakkend ritme. De balans tussen melodie en ritme blijft goed, daarnaast is ook de verdeling tussen vocale en instrumentale delen goed. In beide zit ruim voldoende variatie. Bovendien zijn er ook leuke details, die je niet allemaal bij de eerste keer luisteren meekrijgt. \u2018Mausoleum\u2019 heeft door de orgelklanken een opvallend andere start. Vrij snel nemen het pakkend ritme en de soms zwaar bespeelde snaren de regie over. Ook hier hoor je de tamboerijn, dit is later ingespeeld door Nicke. In de tweede helft zitten er een paar leuke wendingen. Het einde sterft gaaf weg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dan volgt het verrassend klein gespeelde \u2018The Funeral Pyre\u2019. Je hoort de kraakjes op de achtergrond, het past bij de retro sound van de 70\u2019s. Aan de andere kant het haalt het ook wat aandacht weg van dit korte, ingetogen instrumentale nummer. In de fantastisch opgebouwde track \u2018Nightmare\u2019 wordt over Epiales gezongen. Deze Griekse god is de geest en personificatie van nachtmerries. In meerdere songteksten wordt er over Egyptische of Griekse goden gezongen. Dit geldt ook voor \u2018Phobos\u2019, de Griekse god van angst, daarom gaat dit nummer over een vriendin wiens leven beheerst wordt door angsten. Met dit in gedachten wordt het langzaam wegstervend eind van dit laatste nummer nog specialer. Want heel ver op de achtergrond hoor je, heel even, een kerkklok luiden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het geluid is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon, de groezelige sound is nergens te overheersend. De balans tussen zang en muziek is er constant, en dat geldt ook voor de instrumenten onderling. Bovendien zijn er ruim voldoende wendingen en details. \u2018Lucifer IV\u2019 is toegankelijk en aangenaam opzwepend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
