De Bosuil has something new: Club Donder. This is a concert series of nine concerts, taking place every third Thursday night in De Bosuil (Weert). This series is offered at a very special price. The alternative Dutch rock band Ten Times A Million was the first to perform on 21 October. This band originated about five years ago from Mandrake’s Monster. Ten Times A Million’s style is reminiscent of Arctic Monkeys and Queens Of The Stone Age, among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Blair Jollands<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The support act was provided by New Zealander Blair Jollands. Although this was a solo performance, this songwriter had quite a lot of equipment with him. This had to do with his sound effects and the sound recordings that he also uses live. You could hear that in the first song ‘Nothin In The Pot’ from his album ‘Holograms’. He sang a number of sentences, this high-pitched singing later sounding simultaneously with his lower vocals. When his voice was completely solo, the beautiful colour of his voice stood out even more. But also, the blend of his polyphonic (overdubbed) singing was good. Blair sang ‘Things We Do’ very sensitively and his guitar playing was modest and pure.
He called the equipment around him ‘band in a box’, which he used in ‘My Back Door’ and other songs . Here he played on an acoustic guitar and at the same time on his blues harp, alternating with vocals. Surprisingly, he also did a bit of beatboxing. As if that was not enough, he added various sounds with all kinds of equipment. It was well resolved to create a “band feeling”, on the other hand these actions took some attention away from the song. In ‘Burning Man’ (from the movie The Mad Axeman), the added sounds and the music that “ran along” felt very natural, because Blair didn’t have to do much for it now. He asked the audience to sing along, but there was little response. Apparently, people needed more encouragement, but that didn’t happen. His last song, ‘No Heaven In Hell’, was again very sensitive, with his versatile voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten Times A Million<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The performance of these rockers from Enschede started with ‘Come Closer’. Frontman
Martin Duve has a clear pronunciation and a beautiful, own way of performing.
Guitarists Peter Muller and Alex Freise did the backing vocals. During ‘Make This Stop’ Martin showed a powerful vocal outburst. Alex stood opposite to Mart Nijen Es playing, with one foot on the bass drum. Although the energy wasn’t in the way of movement, you could feel the energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In the small played part of ‘Good Times’ Peter played the keyboards. Mart suited his way of drumming very well. Martin sang very softly, you could almost hear a pin drop on the floor. Tempo and volume were built up nicely.
Quick Fix’ has a wonderful drum intro, in which Mart was put in the light nicely. Sem Christoffel was good with his bass, but not overly audible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make it Wit Chu<\/strong>
‘Silhouettes’ is a hard rock song that Martin wrote to get rid of his anger and pain. Where it was possible, Mart hit his drumkit fanatically. Sem was playing in the face of Mart for a while. Both in the softer played pieces and in this hard rock song, the sound was well balanced. There was enough front light, so you could see the expression on Martins face. A number of songs had a tight and unexpected ending, this went smoothly. The men were clearly in tune with each other. In addition, the close interconnection between the band members was visible. The atmosphere on stage and in the venue was pleasant. In between some songs, Martin easily chatted with the audience. He also made a joke regularly, and the audience sometimes responded with a funny comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Besides their own songs, they also played a cover, this one being ‘Make it Wit Chu’ by Queens Of The Stone Age. This song started modest on keyboards, and with soft vocals by Martin. Mart kept his drumsticks still, but he was clearly in the flow. During the instrumental piece, Martin got totally into the music. The tempo and volume changes were also played well here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clownface<\/strong>
After ‘When The Lights Go Out’, only Peter and Martin remained on stage. The audience was one of the first to listen to the acoustic ‘Higher’. Again, Martin’s voice came into its own. The same applied to Peter’s wordless backing vocals. After this song, there was a short technical problem with the lighting. Martin saw the positive side of this and asked for mobile phone light. There were jokes and laughter, which made it even more fun. Despite the jokes, Martin managed to create a sensitive atmosphere with the subdued ‘Bye’. Vocals and music were beautiful and emotional. ‘Clownface’ was really the very last song. During the very extensive instrumental piece, the men played faster and faster. The long-awaited musical slow-down was beautiful. The band members were only introduced non-verbally. Martin ‘mastered’ the audience, again they sang along effortlessly. His vocal outbursts remained good, tempo and volume went up one more time, this last song lasted no less than fourteen minutes. These men played for over eighty minutes, and what did they, and the audience, enjoy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten Times A Million geeft Club Donder een zeer goede start.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

De Bosuil heeft iets nieuws: Club Donder. Dit is een concertreeks van negen concerten, en vindt elke derde donderdagavond plaats in De Bosuil (Weert). Deze reeks wordt aangeboden tegen een z\u00e9\u00e9r speciale prijs. De alternatieve Nederlandse rockband Ten Times A Million mocht 21 oktober het spits afbijten. Deze band is zo\u2019n vijf jaar geleden ontstaan uit Mandrake\u2019s Monster. De stijl van Ten Times A Million heeft wel wat weg van onder andere Arctic Monkeys en Queens Of The Stone Age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blair Jollands<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Het voorprogramma werd verzorgd door de Nieuw Zeelander Blair Jollands. Hoewel dit een solo optreden was, had deze songwriter best veel apparatuur bij zich. Dat had te maken met zijn geluideffecten en de geluidsopnames die hij ook live gebruikt. Dat hoorde je bij het eerste nummer \u2018Nothin In The Pot\u2019 van zijn album \u2018Holograms\u2019. Hij zong een aantal zinnen, deze hoge zang klonk later gelijktijdig met zijn lagere zang. Als zijn stem geheel solo was, viel de mooie kleur van zijn stem extra goed op. Maar ook de blend van zijn meerstemmige (overdubde) zang was goed. Blair zong \u2018Things We Do\u2019 heel gevoelig en zijn gitaarspel was klein en puur van opzet.
De apparatuur om hem heen noemde hij \u2018band in a box\u2019, dat gebruikte hij onder andere in
\u2018My Back Door\u2019. Hier speelde hij speelde op een akoestische gitaar en tegelijk op zijn bluesharp, dit wisselde hij af met zang. Verrassend genoeg ging hij ook een beetje beatboxen. Alsof dat nog niet genoeg was, voegde hij er met allerlei apparatuur diverse geluiden aan toe. Het was goed opgelost om zo een \u201cbandgevoel\u201d te cre\u00ebren, aan de andere kant haalde deze handelingen wel wat aandacht weg van het liedje. In \u2018Burning Man\u2019 (uit de film The Mad Axeman) voelde de toegevoegde geluiden en de muziek die \u201cmeeliep\u201d heel natuurlijk aan, want Blair hoefde er nu weinig voor te doen. Hij vroeg het publiek om mee te zingen, daar kwam weinig respons op. Blijkbaar had men meer aanmoediging nodig, maar dat gebeurde niet. Zijn laatste nummer \u2018No Heaven In Hell\u2019, bracht hij, met zijn veelzijdige stem, weer heel gevoelig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten Times A Million<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Het optreden van deze rockers uit Enschede startte met \u2018Come Closer\u2019. Frontman
Martin Duve heeft een duidelijke uitspraak en een mooie, eigen manier van performen.
De gitaristen Peter Muller en Alex Freise deden de backing vocals. Tijdens \u2018Make This Stop\u2019 liet Martin een krachtige, vocale uithaal horen. Alex stond tegen over Mart Nijen Es te spelen, waarbij hij met \u00e9\u00e9n voet op de bassdrum stond. Hoewel de energie er qua beweging niet af spatte, voelde je de energie wel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In het klein gespeelde deel van \u2018Good Times\u2019 speelde Peter op de toetsen. Mart paste zijn manier van drummen prima aan. Martin zong heel zacht, je kon bijna een speld horen vallen in de zaal. Tempo en volume werden weer mooi opgebouwd.
\u2018Quick Fix\u2019 heeft een heerlijk drum intro, waarbij Mart mooi in het licht gezet was. Sem Christoffel was met zijn bas goed, maar niet overdadig te horen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make it Wit Chu<\/strong>
\u2018Silhouettes\u2019 is een hardrock nummer dat Martin heeft geschreven om zijn boosheid en verdriet kwijt te kunnen. Mart mepte er, daar waar het kon, fanatiek op los. Sem stond even tegenover Mart te spelen. Zowel in de zachter gespeelde stukken als in dit hardrock nummer was het geluid prima in balans. Er was ruim voldoende frontlicht, zodat de expressie op Martins gezicht goed te zien was. Een aantal nummers hadden een strak en onverwacht einde, dit verliep vlekkeloos. De mannen waren duidelijk op elkaar ingespeeld. Daarnaast was de hechte band tussen de bandleden zichtbaar. De sfeer op de b\u00fchne en in de zaal was gemoedelijk. Tussen enkele nummers in praatte Martin heel gemakkelijk met het publiek. Daarnaast hij maakte regelmatig een grapje, vanuit het publiek kwam er soms een leuk weerwoord op.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naast eigen werk speelden ze ook een cover, dit was \u2018Make it Wit Chu\u2019 van Queens Of The Stone Age. Dit nummer begon ingetogen op toetsen, en met zachte zang van Martin. Mart hield zijn drumstokken nog stil, maar hij zat duidelijk wel in de flow. Gedurende het instrumentale stuk kroop Martin helemaal in de muziek. De tempo-en volumewisselingen werden ook hier goed gespeeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clownfac<\/strong>e
Na \u2018When The Lights Go Out\u2019 bleven alleen Peter en Martin achter op het podium. De aanwezigen waren \u00e9\u00e9n van de eersten die naar het akoestische \u2018Higher\u2019 mochten luisteren. Ook nu kwam Martins stem goed tot zijn recht. Dat gold ook voor de woordeloze achtergrondzang van Peter. Na dit nummer was er een korte technische storing in het licht. Martin zag er het positieve van in en vroeg om het licht van mobieltjes. Er werden grapjes gemaakt en gelachen, zo werd het nog gezelliger. Ondanks de grapjes, wist Martin met het ingetogen \u2018Bye\u2019 meteen een gevoelige sfeer te maken. Zang en muziek waren prachtig en emotioneel. \u2018Clownface\u2019 was echt het allerlaatste nummer. Tijdens het zeer uitgebreide instrumentale stuk speelden de mannen steeds sneller. De langverwachte muzikale vertraging was mooi. De bandleden werden alleen non-verbaal voorgesteld. Martin bespeelde het publiek, weer zong men moeiteloos mee. Zijn vocale uithalen bleven goed, nog \u00e9\u00e9n keer gingen tempo en volume omhoog, dit laatste nummer duurde maar liefst zo\u2019n veertien minuten.
