In 2006, the psychedelic blues rock band The Vintage Caravan was formed by guitar player\/singer \u00d3skar Logi \u00c1g\u00fastsson, and Gu\u00f0j\u00f3n Reynisson. Those days, these Icelanders were only 12 years \u2018old\u2019. Now, \u00d3skar is the only one who is still in the band. Of course, he still is very young, but he already joins The Vintage Caravan for more than half his life. \u00d3skar tells: \u201cI grew up with the band, I am attached to the band. It went from an early innocent phase to a full-time activity. I feel very lucky that I\u2019m able to do this. If the pandemic began in the year 2014, when I moved the Denmark, it would have taken everything on hold. Now we were able to tour and play a lot during six years. I moved to Denmark in my sister\u2019s house when I was 19 or 20. It was a fun adventure\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Vintage Caravan always gives 120%<\/strong>
The Vintage Caravan was support act for rock band bands, like Europe, and many others. Most of the bandmembers are much older than the Icelanders. They taught \u00d3skar a lot of things. He always wants to learn as much as possible, so he received a lot of information by the \u2018older\u2019 guys, for example how to warm up his voice. But he learned much more, also some don\u2019ts. He saw the negative effects of drugs. He is not anti-drug, but he always stayed away of it, and he still does. The band doesn\u2019t drink alcohol before the show. Also, during a tour, he barely drinks beer. \u201cMy voice has to be in the correct touring mode. For us, music is always at first place. Of course, the light show has to be good too, but music is the most important. It\u2019s a way of life, we are full of energy and we consistently give 120%\u201d, we always did\u201d, explains \u00d3skar. \u201cBut when I look back to old live video\u2019s from, let\u2019s say from six years ago, I see enthusiast guys having a great time. But my timing, those days, was not that good. Sometimes I gave so much energy, that I almost was running out of energy during song number six. Of course, I never gave up and went through it! We still go nuts on stage, but it\u2019s better dosed.\u201d
Of course, \u00d3skar has more life experience then ten years ago. You can hear more emotion in his music and his voice. I asked him if it makes it easier of more complicated to write and perform emotional songs. This is what he said: \u201cSometimes it makes it easier. I wrote a lot in the past, 90% was poor, and only 10% of it was pretty good. However, it\u2019s not always easy to dig deep, but I can dig deeper now. So, more life experience makes it easier to write.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This one is for you<\/strong>
Next month The Vintage Caravan will release their album \u2018Monuments\u2019. As always, the artwork an eyecatcher. We already saw the multi coloured caravan on the cover of Voyage. Sebastian Jerke did the artwork of Monuments, the cover looks a little spiritual. There is a kind of symbolic meaning, because inside the caravan you see another universe. At the backside, you\u2019re in the caravan: from its inside, you can look outside. The album comes with a lyric booklet with nice photos. Both, bass player\/backing vocalist Alexander \u00d6rn N\u00famason and drummer Stef\u00e1n Ari Stef\u00e1nsson had this name on their wish list. \u201cThe title fits very well\u201d tells \u00d3skar. Because every song is a kind of monument on its own.\u201d This threesome decided to be very open on this album. There are a few personal lyrics on it, like \u2018This one is for you\u2019. \u00d3skar wrote this one for his brother, who passed away in 2018. Writing this song was a part of his \u201chealing process\u201d. Because of the emotion in vocals and music, this song touched my heart. I mention that it must be difficult to play this one live between the other catchy songs. \u201cSo far, we haven\u2019t played it live, answers \u00d3skar. \u201cI guess I will be nervous about playing live. It\u2019s a delicate song, and I have to go deep. It\u2019s not easy, but I did it before, for example at Graspop (a festival in Belgium). I sung \u2018Innerverse\u2019, from the album \u2018Arrival\u2019, it was two months after he passed away, I really felt emotional.
I went too far and I cried on stage, everyone was with me. It must have been very impressive for the audience, the fanbase in Belgium grew amazingly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Monuments<\/strong>
Monuments opens with \u2018Whispers\u2019 this catchy track is an earworm. Alexander wrote the lyrics, it\u2019s about a party life style. Everything is fun on Saturday night, but the next day it doesn\u2019t feel so good anymore. \u2018Crystallized\u2019 is a kind of warning song about the bad weather in Iceland. Tourists underestimate the blizzards, they ignore the red weather alert over and over again. In the beginning of 2020, a man got stuck in a snowstorm, he left his car and walked into the blizzard. That\u2019s why you hear sampling of the wind and a slamming door. \u201cThe video doesn\u2019t tell the real story\u201d, says \u00d3skar with enthusiasm \u201cIt\u2019s quite crazy, we like to have fun\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Sharp Teeth\u2019 is about feelings of anger. Sometimes, \u00d3skar was angry about himself, about making some faults over and over again. \u201cI am not an angry person\u201d, he clarifies. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to hurt anyone\u2019s feelings, but sometimes it happened. I learned from it, and I want to be a better person every time.
I enjoy where I am now\u201d. The lyrics of \u2018Clarity\u2019 are very personal for Alexander. Usually when he has a new song, he plays it. But this time he couldn\u2019t, so he used a demo. This special song definitely had to be last one on the album. Alexander plays a six-string acoustic guitar and \u00d3skar the twelve string, the band comes in (much) later. \u2018Clarity\u2019 has a beautiful harmony, that\u2019s why the choir goes really well with it. \u00d3skar reveals: \u201cI will ask the audience to sing along with this part, I hope the fans will go on singing for a while. We always want to make the best album possible and this is the best so far.
I\u2019m really happy with it\u201d.

In die tijd waren deze IJslanders slechts 12 jaar \u201coud\u201d. Nu is \u00d3skar de enige die nog in de band zit. The Vintage Caravan geeft altijd 120%<\/strong>
The Vintage Caravan stond in het voorprogramma van rockbands, zoals Europe, en vele anderen. De meeste bandleden zijn veel ouder dan de IJslanders. Ze hebben \u00d3skar veel dingen geleerd. Hij wil altijd zoveel mogelijk kennis opdoen, dus kreeg hij veel informatie van de \u201coudere\u201d jongens, bijvoorbeeld hoe hij zijn stem kon opwarmen, maar hij leerde nog veel meer. Hij zag de negatieve effecten van drugs. Hij is niet anti-drugs, maar hij is er altijd van afgebleven. De band drinkt geen alcohol voor de show. Ook tijdens een tour drinkt hij amper bier. \u201cMijn stem moet in de juiste tourmodus zijn. Voor ons staat muziek altijd op de eerste plaats. Natuurlijk moet de lichtshow ook goed zijn, maar muziek is het belangrijkste. Het is een manier van leven. We zijn vol energie en we geven consequent 120%\u201d, dat deden we altijd\u201d, legt \u00d3skar uit. \u201cMaar als ik terugkijk naar oude livevideo\u2019s van laten we zeggen zes jaar geleden, zie ik enthousiaste jongens die het naar hun zin hebben, maar toentertijd was mijn timing was niet zo goed. Soms gaf ik zoveel energie, dat ik tijdens het zesde nummer al afgepeigerd was. Natuurlijk heb ik nooit opgegeven en ben ik gewoon door gegaan! We gaan nog steeds los op het podium, maar het is beter gedoseerd\u201d.
Natuurlijk heeft \u00d3skar meer levenservaring dan tien jaar geleden. Je hoort meer emotie in zijn muziek en in zijn stem. Ik vroeg hem of het makkelijker of moeilijker is om emotionele liedjes te schrijven en te performen. Zijn antwoord luidde: “Soms is het makkelijker. Ik heb in het verleden veel geschreven, 90% was slecht, en slechts 10% ervan was behoorlijk goed. Het is niet altijd makkelijk om diep te graven, maar ik kan nu dieper graven. Dus, meer levenservaring maakt het makkelijker om te schrijven.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018This one is for you\u2019<\/strong>
Volgende maand zal The Vintage Caravan hun album \u2018Monuments\u2019 uitbrengen. Zoals altijd is het artwork een eyecatcher. We zagen de veelkleurige caravan al op de cover van \u2018Voyage\u2019. Sebastian Jerke deed het artwork van \u2018Monuments\u2019, de cover ziet er een beetje spiritueel uit. Het heeft in feite een symbolische betekenis, want in de caravan zie je een ander universum. Op de achterkant zit je in de caravan: van binnen kun je naar buiten kijken. Bij het album zit een tekstboekje met mooie foto\u2019s. Zowel bassist \/achtergrondzanger Alexander \u00d6rn N\u00famason als drummer Stef\u00e1n Ari Stef\u00e1nsson hadden deze naam op hun verlanglijstje. \u201cDe titel past heel goed\u201d, vertelt \u00d3skar. Omdat elk nummer een soort monument op zich is.\u201d Het drietal besloot heel open te zijn op dit album. Er staan een paar persoonlijke teksten op, zoals \u2018This One\u2019s For You\u2019. \u00d3skar schreef deze voor zijn broer, die in 2018 overleed. Het schrijven van dit lied maakte deel uit van zijn verwerkingsproces.
Door de emotie in zang en muziek raakte dit nummer mijn hart. Ik gaf aan dat het moeilijk moet zijn om deze live tussen de andere pakkende nummers te spelen. \u201cTot nu toe hebben we het niet live gespeeld, antwoordt \u00d3skar. \u201cIk denk dat ik wel zenuwachtig zal zijn als ik het live speel. Het is een gevoelig nummer, en ik moet diep gaan. Het zal niet mee vallen, maar ik deed dit al eerder, bijvoorbeeld bij Graspop. Twee maanden nadat hij gestorven was, zong ik \u2018Innerverse\u2019, van het album \u2018Arrival\u2019, het was heel emotioneel voor mij. Ik ging te diep, waardoor ik stond te huilen op het podium, maar iedereen leefde met mij mee. Het moet erg indrukwekkend zijn geweest voor het publiek, de fanbase in Belgi\u00eb groeide verbazingwekkend\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Op zaterdagavond is alles leuk, maar de volgende dag voel je je niet echt goed. \u2018Crystallized\u2019 is een soort waarschuwingslied over het slechte weer in IJsland. Toeristen onderschatten de sneeuwstormen, ze negeren keer op keer het \u2018red weather alert\u2019. Begin 2020 kwam een man vast te zitten in een sneeuwstorm, hij verliet zijn auto en liep de sneeuwstorm in. Daarom hoor je het geluid van de wind en een dichtslaande deur. \u201cDe video vertelt niet het echte verhaal\u201d, zegt \u00d3skar enthousiast. \u201cHet is soms een beetje absurd misschien, maar we houden van plezier maken\u201d.

Ik heb ervan geleerd en ik wil steeds een beter mens worden. Ik geniet van waar ik nu ben. De tekst van \u2018Clarity\u2019 is heel persoonlijk voor Alexander. Meestal als hij een nieuw nummer heeft, speelt hij het. Maar deze keer kon hij het niet, dus gebruikte hij een demo. Dit speciale nummer moest absoluut het laatste van het album zijn \u201d. Alexander speelt een zessnarige akoestische gitaar en \u00d3skar de twaalfsnarige, de band valt (veel) later bij. \u2018Clarity\u2019 heeft een prachtige harmonie, daarom past het koor er heel goed bij. \u00d3skar verklapt: \u201cIk zal het publiek vragen mee te zingen met dit deel, ik hoop dat de fans nog een tijdje zullen blijven meezingen. We willen altijd het best mogelijke album maken en dit is het beste tot nu toe. Ik ben er heel blij mee\u201d.
