Alberto Molesini aka Baro is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer. He founded the prog band ‘La Sintesi’ at the end of the 70s. He has always remained active, for instance as the bassist of Marygold. About two years ago, he released the double album ‘Lucillo & Giada’\/ Topic W\u00fcrlenio’ under the name BARO prog-jets. This album received rave reviews. The successor, ‘Utopie’, was released in mid-February.
It contains five tracks, three of them are epics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Non sento’ has a pleasant, spring-like melody. Baro’s remarkable voice is slightly less warm in the high notes than the music. But his voice is friendly, and therefore fits the music. The stacked vocals (by Baro) are well done. This opening track is sung in Italian. In ‘Utopia’, the keyboards are very present, sometimes they are played very retro. The first part of the title track is instrumental. Vocals are added in the second part, now Baro sings in English. The numerous twists and turns in the music make it a bit less accessible, but fascinating. The third part has a pleasantly long instrumental piece, again with lots of keyboards.
The changes in the music keep on coming. When Baro sings lower, his voice is warmer and therefore more enjoyable. In the ‘chorus’, the ’togetherness’ of the vocals blends nicely. You can hear the turns from one part to the other, the parts fit together well. In between all the ‘bustle’, there are a few short pieces that are played a little softer and slower. These are also largely complex in structure. Because the whole is a bit less accessible, the album has to grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piano playing at the start of ‘Phase I’ flows over into a mix of keys and strings, complemented by drums. There is a good balance between the high and low tones, this is processed in a delicious melody.
Because of the turns and the details, there is quite a lot coming at you, yet it is not bombastic. A hectic piece is alternated with a calmer part, but also here there are special rhythms and nice details. This leads to ‘Phase II’. With Baro singing less loudly and less high, his voice sounds clear. A touch of music is added to his words. Slowly, tempo and volume increase. Soon this change to a calmer part with light classical elements. Just before the end, the vocals are almost solo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Runaways’ consists of several parts, at the start there is singing, supplemented by a little music. When the music speeds up, the singing stops. There are again a lot of pleasant twists and turns. The keyboards are a mix or alternation of electronic and piano sounds. Classical elements are regularly incorporated. So, there is a lot to listen to. The third part, ‘Iron garden’ is instrumental. The music is slower, mysterious, and has nice bass grooves. Tempo and volume build up, and so we end up in ‘River and Mountain. After countless twists and turns, we arrive at ‘Epilogue’. The polyphonic vocals are supported by rather quiet music.
After a short acceleration, this beautiful epic extinguishes a bit unexpectedly, but beautifully.
Baro has a passionate way of singing. He also has a distinctive colour of voice. This is especially evident in the higher and\/or louder vocals. ‘Utopie’ is recommended to fans of fairly complex prog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
