Tony Romero’s Vortex was founded in 2020 by Tony Romero. Music (in all kinds of styles) was important in his youth. At the age of eighteen he started playing keyboard. Even then, he dreamed of one day recording his music. At the end of last year, the time had come: ‘Noise Machine’ was launched. On this album, you mainly hear ambient rock. This is music in a quiet style, made with electronic instruments. These are used to create soundscapes, which are a kind of atmospheric images. These atmospheric images are more important than the melody and the rhythm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Square Lock’ starts with spoken sampling and spacey music. This opening track ends with the words “Welcome to the Noise Machine”, after which the title track follows. Connoisseurs will recognize the remarkable voice of Steve Bonino. This track has both electronic sounds and slightly rocking elements. Most turns are subtle, but there is also a very soft piece in it. The keyboard solo comes from Robert Schindler. The drum lovers will probably miss the absence of real drums. For also in ‘Tower of Brass’, the pleasant rhythm does not have much variation. The sound of what looks like cymbals is good. Steve (Bonino) plays cool bass grooves. Unfortunately, this song is abruptly cut short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The intro of ‘Mellowship’ is built up differently, the rhythm has a fine flow. Some details have a light ’70s atmosphere. Now and then there is an echo on the vocals. The wonderful guitar play of Peter Matuchniak comes forward nicely. This song also has nice details, although some almost drop away because the sound of the “drums” is a little too loud. Tony creates clear atmospheres, you can hear that for instance in ‘Indian Summer West’ and ‘Dance 1’. The intro of ‘Ice Dance’ is special, you hear the sound of what seems like a slow heartbeat. This is supported by a touch of music. Sophia Baird’s soft, clear vocals suit this dreamy track.
The lyrics of ‘Clown’ are a little different than you might initially expect. The slightly chaotic music fits this track. The instrumental, spacey ‘Jupiter’ is followed by ‘March in a Bottle’. The voices of Liz Tapia and Steve form a fine harmony. The slower ‘Closure’ has melancholy in vocals and music. Only when you listen carefully to the lyrics, the meaning of the words comes through. The build-up is a bit monotonous, on the one hand I understand the choice because of the hopelessness. On the other hand, if there had been more emotion in the singing and music, this song could have touched you deep down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘A Beautiful Piece of Music’ is slightly classical oriented. Everything flows from the keys. This is teamwork by Tony and Robert. The beautiful melody comes into its own, because no (drum) rhythm has been added. On ‘Noise Machine’, there are 14 tracks that are generally quite short. There are only a few rocking elements. Because of the ambient rock, the rhythm is less important, moreover there are quite a few repetitions. The “drums” have an electronic sound, some will miss the warm sound of real drums. Tony always creates a fitting atmosphere with his compositions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
