There are bands who start out as a studio band and then start performing. The American prog band Temple of Switches did it the other way around. About three years after their formation (in 2012), the band officially disbanded. But founder\/multi-instrumentalist Tenk van Dool kept the name, Temple of switches has been a studio band ever since. In 2017, he released the second album titled &#8216;Helium parade&#8217;. &#8216;The Wings of Mind&#8217; followed in the winter of 2020. Parts of this album were recorded in the late &#8216; 80s. The rest was recorded between 2017 and 2020. A number of guest musicians participated in &#8216;The Wings of Mind&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Melba&#8217; starts with a mix of electronic sounds and rock. The sound is a bit dull, which is fine. The retro sound is of course because the recordings of bass and drums were done in the late &#8216; 80s. The fade out is a bit boring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Freon Suitcase&#8217; is a mysterious, instrumental track. Later, the atmosphere becomes almost spooky, and you would expect a climax. There are no big or surprising turns, but the whole thing slowly calms down. The sound in &#8216;Don&#8217;t cry to me&#8217; is a bit brighter than in the previous tracks. This is one of the songs Jim Chavez sings, and he does it convincingly. The instruments sometimes go against each other, but the balance remains. Tenk&#8217;s guitar playing is fine again, rocking where allowed, calmer where needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The start of &#8216;Curtains&#8217; is wonderfully rocking. The drums have a simple base here too, so the other instruments get all the space they need. The vocals of Tenk sound a bit distorted now and then. This short, rocking song has a nice tight ending. The softly played intro of &#8216;Back Seat&#8217; with its jazzy atmosphere is surprising. The way of drumming fits in well. Clara Hembree is the guest singer; her voice fits nicely into the whole. The minimalist piece makes just too little impression. An unexpected transition is followed by an instrumental piece, here the tempo and volume are a lot higher. The slow fade out is well chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already during the quiet intro, you notice that the sound in &#8216;One for All&#8217; is better. A number of tracks have a slightly boring fade out, but for the rest the songs are quite well constructed. Also because of the different guest musicians and vocalists, &#8216;The wings of mind&#8217; has the feeling of a compilation album. Still, the songs fit together well enough. In the one song, the retro sound is more obvious than in the other. The guitar playing is regularly distorted. A good choice, because it fits the old recordings. Nar een onverwachte overgang volgt een instrumentaal stuk, hier liggen tempo en volume een stuk hoger. De tekst wordt gebracht als een soort gebed en gaat over het onvermogen van de mens om goed om te kunnen gaan met het informatietijdperk. Met de woorden \u201cJust look away\u201d eindigt dit laatste nummer. Een aantal tracks heeft een iets saaie fade out, verder zijn de nummers best goed opgebouwd. Mede door de verschillende gastmuzikanten en vocalisten heeft \u2018The wings of mind\u2019 het gevoel van een verzamelalbum. Toch sluiten de nummers goed genoeg bij elkaar aan.
