Each band has its own history. There are bands who start out as a studio band and then start performing. The American prog band Temple of Switches did it the other way around. About three years after their formation (in 2012), the band officially disbanded. But founder\/multi-instrumentalist Tenk van Dool kept the name, Temple of switches has been a studio band ever since. In 2017, he released the second album titled ‘Helium parade’. ‘The Wings of Mind’ followed in the winter of 2020. Parts of this album were recorded in the late ‘ 80s. The rest was recorded between 2017 and 2020. A number of guest musicians participated in ‘The Wings of Mind’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Melba’ starts with a mix of electronic sounds and rock. The sound is a bit dull, which is fine. The retro sound is of course because the recordings of bass and drums were done in the late ‘ 80s. This was done with a tape deck, for the insiders: with the TEAC-A3440.
Apart from bass and drums, Tenk plays guitar and keyboard here and also sings. He does this partly in a mysterious sound that matches the music. The sound flows nicely back and forth in the headphones. This is a kind of love song for an old lady. Tenk doesn’t go clich\u00e9-minded, because this is a rocking song. With a lot of guitar work, nice bass grooves and special added extras of the keyboards. This opening track ends with a wonderful instrumental piece. The piano notes at the start of ‘Pondering’ are followed by various instruments. The turns sometimes follow each other in quick succession, there are pieces with delicious jazz. There are many layers in the music, but because of the retro sound, not everything comes out well. The fade out is a bit boring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Freon Suitcase’ is a mysterious, instrumental track. Later, the atmosphere becomes almost spooky, and you would expect a climax. There are no big or surprising turns, but the whole thing slowly calms down. The sound in ‘Don’t cry to me’ is a bit brighter than in the previous tracks. This is one of the songs Jim Chavez sings, and he does it convincingly. The instruments sometimes go against each other, but the balance remains. Tenk’s guitar playing is fine again, rocking where allowed, calmer where needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The start of ‘Curtains’ is wonderfully rocking. The drums have a simple base here too, so the other instruments get all the space they need. The vocals of Tenk sound a bit distorted now and then. This short, rocking song has a nice tight ending. The softly played intro of ‘Back Seat’ with its jazzy atmosphere is surprising. The way of drumming fits in well. Clara Hembree is the guest singer; her voice fits nicely into the whole. The minimalist piece makes just too little impression. An unexpected transition is followed by an instrumental piece, here the tempo and volume are a lot higher. The slow fade out is well chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Already during the quiet intro, you notice that the sound in ‘One for All’ is better. No wonder, because this was (just like ‘Back Seat’) written and recorded last year. It is melancholic sung and played. The lyrics are performed as a kind of prayer and deal with man’s inability to cope with the information age. The last song ends with the words “Just look away”. A number of tracks have a slightly boring fade out, but for the rest the songs are quite well constructed. Also because of the different guest musicians and vocalists, ‘The wings of mind’ has the feeling of a compilation album. Still, the songs fit together well enough. In the one song, the retro sound is more obvious than in the other. The guitar playing is regularly distorted. A good choice, because it fits the old recordings. If you like the sound quality of today, you might have to get used to the vintage sound. For the connoisseurs and lovers of the recording equipment of the 80s, this is enjoyment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Met lekker veel gitaarwerk, aangename bas grooves en bijzondere toegevoegde extra\u2019s van de toetsen. Dit openingsnummer eindigt met een heerlijk instrumentaal stuk. De pianoklanken aan de start van \u2018Pondering\u2019 worden opgevolgd door verschillende instrumenten. De wendingen volgen elkaar soms snel op, er zijn stukken met heerlijke jazz. Er zijn lekker veel laagjes in de muziek, maar door de retrosound komt niet alles goed tot zijn recht. De fade out is een beetje saai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Freon Suitcase\u2019 is een geheimzinnige, instrumentale track. Later wordt de sfeer bijna spookachtig, en je zou een climax verwachten. Er komen geen grote of verrassende wendingen, maar het geheel wordt langzaam rustiger. Het geluid in \u2018Don’t cry to me\u2019 is iets helderder dan in de voorgaande nummers. Dit is \u00e9\u00e9n van de nummers die Jim Chavez zingt, en dat doet hij overtuigend. De instrumenten gaan soms tegen elkaar in, maar de balans blijft. Het gitaarspel van Tenk is weer prima, rockend waar het mag, rustiger waar het moet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De start van \u2018Curtains\u2019 is heerlijk rockend. Het drumwerk heeft ook hier een eenvoudige basis, zodat de overige instrumenten alle ruimte krijgen. De zang van Tenk klinkt af en toe wat vervormd. Dit korte, rockende nummer heeft een leuk strak einde. Het zacht gespeelde intro van \u2018Back Seat\u2019 met de jazzy sfeer is verrassend. De manier van drummen sluit hier goed bij aan. Clara Hembree is de gast zangeres, haar stem past mooi in het geheel. Het minimalistisch stukje maakt net te weinig indruk. Nar een onverwachte overgang volgt een instrumentaal stuk, hier liggen tempo en volume een stuk hoger. De langzame fade out is goed gekozen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Al tijdens het rustige intro valt op dat het geluid in \u2018One for All\u2019 beter is. Geen wonder, want dit is (net als \u2018Back Seat\u2019) vorig jaar geschreven en opgenomen. Het is melancholisch gezongen en gespeeld. De tekst wordt gebracht als een soort gebed en gaat over het onvermogen van de mens om goed om te kunnen gaan met het informatietijdperk. Met de woorden \u201cJust look away\u201d eindigt dit laatste nummer. Een aantal tracks heeft een iets saaie fade out, verder zijn de nummers best goed opgebouwd. Mede door de verschillende gastmuzikanten en vocalisten heeft \u2018The wings of mind\u2019 het gevoel van een verzamelalbum. Toch sluiten de nummers goed genoeg bij elkaar aan. In het ene nummer valt het retro geluid meer op dan het andere. Het gitaarspel is regelmatig vervormd. Goede keuze, want zo past het bij de oude opnames. Als je van de geluidskwaliteit van nu houdt, moet je misschien wel een wennen aan het vintage geluid. Voor de kenners en liefhebbers van de opname apparatuur van de jaren \u201880 is dit genieten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
