Blank Manuskript is an art rock band from Austria, they make plenty of use of psychedelic elements and crossovers. Most of these six men are multi-instrumentalists, besides that they all have a contribution in the vocals. ‘Himmelfahrt’ is a concept album that is ‘loosely’ based on ‘Divinia Comedia’ by Dante Alighieri. This poem from the 14th century is considered a highlight of world literature. The three parts tell of a journey through the afterlife. From hell (Inferno), through purgatory (Purgatorio) to paradise (Paradiso). Bad luck follows ‘Blank Manuskript’. The LP was supposed to be released last autumn, but the vinyl was rejected. Then it would be January, but because of Corona, it had to be postponed again. Now the guys are hoping for February. Fortunately, the album is already available digitally and on CD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Side A<\/strong>
The keyboards give ‘Part 1 – Requiem’ a nice start. Then come ‘strings’, drums and more keys. This is played in such a way that it is sometimes difficult to find out exactly what you are hearing. A requiem is a mass celebrated in the Catholic Church for the dead. You hear all kinds of things, except for ‘average’ church music. A number of twists and turns are almost bizarre, but fascinating. Almost without noticing it, the transition to ‘Part 2 – Dance of the Devils’ follows. Due to the rapid alternation of rhythms, styles and the changes between instruments, there is a lot to absorb. Sometimes the quieter parts are experimental, with or without jazz influences. Everything is well distributed on the headphones. There is a surprising rest of a few seconds in it. Then the song seems to go in a completely different direction, but the balance remains. Beautiful fading tones form the seamless change to ‘Part 3 – The Underglow’. The slow and mysterious music is special. The sequel is best described as
slow free jazz with a creepy edge. Not accessible, but very captivating. Slowly tempo and volume increase, and a cacophony ensues. Different styles seem to be mixed up randomly. Sometimes each instrument seems to go its own way, but together they form a wonderful, harmonious melange. Unexpectedly, the first vocals appear. And this too is special, both the ‘solo singing’ and the singing together.
‘Part 4 – Twilight Peak’ follows non-stop. Again, there are a lot of pleasant transitions, from jazz to rock, and again compelling guitar playing with a beautiful melody. The vocal part is good! On the CD you can hear an extended rest, this is the moment when the LP should be turned over. So, this is during the song, but it doesn’t feel like an interruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Side B<\/strong>
The sequel to ‘Twilight Peak’ has a rousing start with jazz influences. The piano sounds in the quiet part form a fine contrast. Tempo and volume build up nicely. The minimalistic, psychedelic piece is fantastic! In ‘Part 2 – Celestial Spheres’ this continues, then tempo and volume increase. This song extinguishes nicely, and runs over into ‘Part 3 – Transition’. In this short track, the music is mysterious, the sound of screeching birds enhances this atmosphere. Part 4 – Heaven’ is accessible, most of the changes are gradual. The cool guitar play is compelling, slowly but surely everything becomes more intense. You can hear that this is the end of the album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now and then you can hear influences of (early) Pink Floyd in vocals and\/or music. Yet Blank Manuskript has its own sound. A number of elements return in a few songs. This creates unity on this fantastic complex album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blank Manuskript is een art rockband uit Oostenrijk, ze maken volop op gebruik psychedelische elementen en cross overs. Side A<\/strong>
De toetsen geven \u2018Part 1 \u2013 Requiem\u2019 een mooie start. Daar komen snaren, drums en nog meer toetsen bij. Dit wordt zo gespeeld dat het soms moeilijk te achterhalen is wat je precies hoort. Een requiem is een mis die in de katholieke kerk wordt opgedragen voor de doden. Je hoort van alles, behalve \u2018doorsnee\u2019 kerkmuziek. Een aantal wendingen zijn bijna bizar, maar wel boeiend. Bijna zonder dat je het merkt volgt de overgang naar \u2018Part 2 – Dance of the Devils\u2019. Door de snelle afwisseling tussen ritmes, stijlen en de wisselingen tussen de instrumenten, komt er best veel op je af. Soms zijn de rustigere delen experimenteel van opzet, al dan niet met jazzinvloeden. Alles is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Er zit een verrassende rust van enkele seconden in verwerkt. Dan lijkt het nummer compleet een andere kant uit te gaan, maar balans blijft. Mooie wegstervende tonen vormen de naadloze verandering naar \u2018Part 3 – The Underglow\u2019. De langzame een geheimzinnige muziek is bijzonder. Het vervolg laat zich het beste omschrijven als langzame free jazz met creepy randje. Niet toegankelijk, wel enorm boeiend. Langzaam nemen tempo en volume toe, en er ontstaat een kakofonie. Verschillende stijlen lijken willekeurig door elkaar gehusseld te zijn. Ieder instrument lijkt soms zijn eigen weg te gaan, bij elkaar vormen ze een wonderlijke, harmonieuze melange. Onverwacht is er de eerste zang. En ook die is bijzonder, dat geldt voor zowel de \u2018solozang\u2019 de samenzang.
Non- stop volgt \u2018Part 4 – Twilight Peak\u2019. Ook hier zijn er aangenaam veel transities, van jazz, naar rock, en weer meeslepend gitaarspel met een mooie melodie. Het vocale deel is goed! Op de cd hoor je een uitgebreide rust, dit is het moment waarop de LP omgedraaid moet worden. Dit is dus tijdens het nummer, maar het voelt niet als een onderbreking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Side B<\/strong>
Het vervolg van \u2018Twilight Peak\u2019 heeft een opzwepende start met jazz invloeden. De pianoklanken in het rustige deel vormen een prima contrast. Tempo en volume worden mooi opgebouwd. Het minimalistische, psychedelische stuk is fantastisch! In \u2018Part 2 – Celestial Spheres\u2019 gaat dit verder, dan nemen tempo en volume toe. Dit nummer dooft mooi uit, en loopt over in \u2018Part 3 \u2013 Transition\u2019. In deze korte track is de muziek geheimzinnig, het geluid van krijsende vogels versterkt deze sfeer. \u2018Part 4 \u2013 Heaven\u2019 is toegankelijk, de meeste veranderingen verlopen geleidelijk. Het gave gitaarspel is meeslepend, langzaam maar zeker wordt alles intenser. Je hoor dat dit het einde is van de cd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Af en toe hoor je invloeden van (vroege) Pink Floyd in zang en\/of muziek. Toch heeft Blank Manuskript zijn eigen sound. Een aantal elementen keren in een paar nummers terug. Dit zorgt voor eenheid op dit fantastische complexe album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
