Now that almost all concerts have come to a standstill again, De Bosuil<\/a> in Weert makes a virtue of necessity. They organise intimate ‘Sit Happens’, accessible to the legal maximum of 30 people. Normally, the venue has a capacity up to 650 visitors. But for these special concerts, De Bosuil<\/a> has been transformed into a small room with the atmosphere of a living room, including candles and cosy vintage lamps.
On Sunday 7 December Jan Bas<\/em><\/strong> was programmed in the afternoon and evening. Both performances were sold out, no wonder because he has been frontman of the Belgian blues band Rusty Roots for almost 15 years. He also sang in soundtracks of among others ‘Safety First: The Movie<\/strong>‘ and the Belgian documentary series ‘Paradise City<\/strong>‘. With the Starman Band he toured Belgium last year. Who would have thought then that 2020 would be such a strange year? But both Jan and the visitors of De Bosuil<\/a> were happy that we were finally allowed to go again. The cosy stage setting was in keeping with the homely decor of the venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tennessee whiskey<\/strong>
With 30 men, there was, of course, a modest, but no less sincere applause when Jan appeared. His nice answer was: “Wait, I might disappoint you<\/em>“. After two good covers (‘Tennessee whiskey<\/strong>‘ and ‘She’s better than you<\/strong>‘) he changed his acoustic guitar for an electric one. Due to a small defect on his guitar, he used a pair of pliers to tune it, which also worked. Van Rusty Roots played on ‘Smiling face<\/strong>‘, of course he started subdued. The slightly rough edge, and the emotion on his voice came to the fore nicely in this ballad. On some of the songs Jan had to cheat for the lyrics, which sometimes felt a bit uncomfortable. Occasionally it looked as if he had completely forgotten the lyrics, but he always sang on. His beautiful voice has quite a wide range, both in volume and pitch. With respect for the original, he gave his own sound to covers such as ‘Fast car<\/strong>‘ (Tracy Chapman) and ‘I got the blues<\/strong>‘ by Labi Siffre. Jan did not only play songs by a variety of artists. He also drew his inspiration from several decades. He even played ‘In the Ghetto<\/strong>‘ by Elvis, which gradually became more and more his own version. The ending was nicely played small and came closer to the original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rusty Roots<\/strong>
There were quite a lot of Belgian fans present. In between the songs Jan made a joke with them once in a while, so the atmosphere became even more cosy. Of course, Jan played a number of songs by Rusty Roots, to be honest: sometimes you missed the atmosphere of the entire band. This is partly because Jan didn’t make eye contact with the audience during the songs, while they were so close. But this modest way of performing suits him. Thus, he managed to perform ‘Electrified<\/strong>‘ and the groovy ‘Backdoorman<\/strong>‘ very well. It’s a man’s world’ has been covered countless times, each in his own way. And Jan also showed his own, beautiful version. That was his last song, but he came back for an encore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nu bijna alle concerten weer stilliggen maakt De Bosuil<\/a> in Weert van de nood een deugd. Zij organiseren intieme \u2018Sit Happens\u2019, toegankelijk voor het wettelijk aantal van maximaal 30 personen. De zaal heeft een normaal een capaciteit van 650 bezoekers. Maar voor deze speciale concerten is De Bosuil<\/a> omgetoverd tot een kleine zaal met de sfeer van een huiskamer, inclusief kaarsjes en gezellige vintage lampen.
Op zondag 7 december stond Jan Bas<\/em><\/strong> \u2019s middags \u00e8n \u2019s avonds geprogrammeerd. Beide optredens waren uitverkocht, geen wonder want hij is al bijna 15 jaar frontman van de Belgische bluesband Rusty Roots. Daarnaast zong hij soundtracks in van onder andere \u2018Safety First: The Movie<\/strong>\u2019 en de Belgische documentaire serie \u2018Paradise City<\/strong>\u2019. Met de Starman Band tourde hij vorig jaar door Belgi\u00eb. Wie had toen kunnen denken dat 2020 zo\u2019n raar jaar zou worden? Maar zowel Jan als de bezoekers van De Bosuil<\/a> waren blij dat we eindelijk weer mochten. De gezellige podiumsetting sloot aan bij de huiselijke inrichting van de zaal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tennessee whiskey<\/strong>
Met 30 man was er natuurlijk een bescheiden, maar niet minder gemeend applaus toen Jan opkwam. Zijn leuke antwoord hierop was: \u201cWacht maar, straks valt het tegen<\/em>\u201d. Na twee goede covers (\u2018Tennessee whiskey<\/strong>\u2019 en \u2018She\u2019s better then you<\/strong>\u2019) wisselde hij zijn akoestische gitaar voor een elektrische. Door een klein mankement aan zijn gitaar gebruikte hij een tangetje om te stemmen, dat werkte ook. Van Rusty Roots speelde bij \u2018Smiling face<\/strong>\u2019, natuurlijk begon hij ingetogen. Het lichte ruwe randje, en de emotie op zijn stem kwamen in deze ballad mooi naar voren. Bij een aantal nummers moest Jan spieken voor de songteksten, dat voelde soms wat ongemakkelijk aan. Een enkele keer leek het of hij de tekst kwijt was, maar hij zong altijd door. Zijn mooie stem heeft vrij groot bereik, zowel in volume als in toonhoogte. Met respect voor het origineel, gaf hij zijn eigen sound aan covers zoals \u2018Fast car<\/strong>\u2019 (Tracy Chapman) en \u2018I got the blues<\/strong>\u2019 van Labi Siffre. Jan speelde niet alleen nummers van uiteenlopende artiesten. Hij haalde zijn inspiratie ook uit verschillende decennia. Hij speelde zelfs \u2018In the Getto<\/strong>\u2019 van Elvis, ook dit werd gaandeweg steeds meer een geheel eigen versie. Rusty Roots<\/strong>
Er waren best veel Belgische fans aanwezig. Tussen de nummers door maakte Jan af en toe een grapje met hen, zo werd de sfeer nog gezelliger. Natuurlijk speelde Jan een aantal nummers van Rusty Roots, eerlijk is eerlijk: soms miste je de sfeer van de complete band. Dit komt deels doordat Jan tijdens de nummers geen oogcontact maakte met het publiek, terwijl men zo dichtbij zat. Maar deze bescheiden manier van performen past bij hem. Zodoende wist hij \u2018Electrified<\/strong>\u2019 en het groovy \u2018Backdoorman<\/strong>\u2019 toch goed neer te zetten. \u2018It\u2019s a mans world<\/strong>\u2019 is al talloze malen gecoverd, ieder op zijn eigen manier. En ook Jan liet zijn eigen, mooie versie horen. Dat was zijn laatste nummer, maar hij kwam terug voor een toegift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wicked games<\/strong>
Eerst speelde hij \u2018Wicked games<\/strong>\u2019 van Chris Isaak. Dit zong hij mooi ingetogen, op het laatst zong hij zelfs breekbaar. Als laatste speelde hij een nummer van een wat onbekendere muzikant: O.V. Wright. Maar bij het horen van de eerste klanken van \u2018Lets straighten it out<\/strong>\u2019 was er toch wat herkenning bij het publiek. Zo kwam er aan dit gezellige optreden een einde. Doordat de bar dicht moest blijven, gingen de bezoekers vrijwel meteen weg. Zo was het snel stil in De Bosuil<\/a>, een onwerkelijke ervaring. Want stiekem miste men wel het gezellige napraten met een drankje erbij. Toch waren de bezoekers bij dat een concert bezoek aan De Bosuil<\/a> weer mogelijk was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wicked games<\/strong>
