A year after their formation, ‘The Bluesbones<\/em><\/strong>‘ booked their first big success, because in 2012 they were public favourite at the ‘Belgian Blues Challenge’. In 2017 they came second on the ‘European Blues Challenge’. Their live shows are always very good because they play full of passion. At the end of 2019 they decided to release a live album, that’s why they performed at GC Den Breughel in Haacht. At that time nobody could have imagined that the Corona crisis would have such big consequences. After a delay, ‘Live On Stage’ will be launched on 20 November. This will feature well-known songs, most of which are featured on ‘Chasing Shadows’ (2018). Some songs are much older and come from ‘Voodo Guitar’ (2012).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The album starts with ‘Find my way Out<\/strong>‘, to which Edwin Risbourg’s organ playing immediately has a delicious part. Those who know The BluesBones know that Nico can be understood very well, even live. He has a pleasant slightly rough edge on his warm voice. Of course, guitarist Stef Paglia also makes himself heard to the full. On their previous album Koen Mertens was the drummer. At the end of 2018 Jens Roelandt became the regular drummer of this Belgian band, he performs a nice piece of drumming. Bass player Geert Boeckx provides, as always, a solid foundation. The audience appreciates this, this is good, but not excessive on the CD. Sitting still is almost impossible in ‘The End<\/strong>‘ and also singing along goes without any hesitation. The background vocals can be heard subtly. Stef’s guitar playing is finger licking. It varies beautifully in tempo and volume, and the band goes along with it. This live performance is even more beautiful than the studio version. For a moment Nico sings solo, this comes into its own very well. After the exhilarating ‘Better Life<\/strong>‘ follows ‘The Witchdoctor<\/strong>‘. This oldy is still loved, and rightly so! Over the years this song has evolved, especially after Edwin joined the band about five years ago. The instrumental pieces have a great structure, Stef has an important part in this as well. They vary from quite small played to pleasantly heavy, this has become such a cool song! ‘Cruisin<\/strong>‘ is a wonderfully exhilarating song, in which Nico first sings in high tempo. In a slower part Nico ’tells’ his lyrics, as tempo and volume increase he sings again. Both styles are very good, vocals and music constantly form a unity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, perhaps audience favourite number 1: ‘Whisky Drinking Woman<\/strong>‘. The subdued start is beautiful. Nico sings or tells very convincingly. The rhythm section plays an excellent basis so that Edwin gets the freedom to give his expression in an instrumental piece. There are a number of tempo and volume changes in the music, Nico goes along with this.
Stef also performs his skills, sometimes he plays pianissimo (very soft). At other times he tears through it with his guitar, this is real ear candy! What a top end of this cd. One small drawback is that fans won’t be surprised with a new song. On the other hand, this cd gives a nice overview of the great songs of The BluesBones<\/em><\/strong>. Geert doesn’t freak, he keeps everything tight. But his grooves are definitely good to hear. The quality of the sound is pretty good, the balance between vocals and music is well distributed in the mix. This makes the sensitive pieces as well as the more heavy rock come into their own. The planned tour European around their release has unfortunately been postponed. But fortunately, the release of ‘Live On Stage<\/em><\/strong>‘ will get on! Especially when you hear this, you miss the live music enormously. Let’s hope 2021 will be a better year!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
