He plays in two other bands, namely the melodic prog band &#8216;Horizontal Ascension&#8217; and &#8216;Force Of Progress&#8217;, a band that plays instrumental prog metal and jazz fusion. In &#8216;<strong><em>Marquette<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; these styles are combined. Their latest album, &#8216;<strong><em>Into the wild<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; is slightly less hectic than their previous album, and therefore more accessible. &#8216;<strong><em>Into the wild<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; is a concept album, based on the book with the same title, written by John Krakower. This book tells the story of Christopher McCandless alias &#8216;Alexander Supertramp&#8217;. He travelled through the United States with only a few dollars in his pocket and minimal equipment. He died of starvation in a remote area of Alaska. With a detailed map he would have survived. Judging purely from the cover, you might expect a metal album. The opening track has a mix of styles, atmospheres and volume changes. There are a lot of twists and turns. Although the music generally has a heavier character, there are lighter parts as well. Including guitar playing, piano sounds and the sound of strings. There is even a rather mysterious piece inserted. Piano playing and &#8216;string instruments&#8217; form the build-up to a whispering end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sound of stringed instruments gives the beginning of &#8216;<strong>Seven Doors<\/strong>&#8216; a melancholic atmosphere.<br>The contrast comes from the more heavily played (bass) guitar. Particularly added sounds are perfectly mixed with tender music. There is a special combination of music and sounds, also the contrasts between rock and subdued parts are nice and large. Although this would have come out better if the sound quality had been better. The saxophone playing is quite far in the background, but blends nicely into the whole. The sound of the cymbals is good with the softer parts played. At the forte (loudly played) pieces it sounds too &#8217;tinny&#8217;. This is particularly disturbing when more repetitions are played. Sometimes the music is a bit chaotic, and then quite a lot comes towards you. But then there is a cool transition to a quieter part. Here, too, all kinds of sounds are added, such as small crackling sounds. The end is beautifully minimalistic. <strong>Criminal Kind<\/strong>&#8216; is a vocal song. Maurizio Menendez sings quite fast, in his pleasant voice less emotion is heard than you would expect with this concept. The details of several voices are nicely distributed over the headphones. Vocal parts are alternated with extensive instrumental parts, in which you can also hear nice bass grooves. The song ends quite suddenly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first minute is humming, in which you can hear breathing. Then some musical notes follow. After this minimalistic piece there are a lot of changes. Some pieces tend towards jazz, others more towards rock. The tempo remains more or less the same for a while. Because of the rapid changes there is quite a lot coming your way. Yet nowhere is it too much. Also &#8216;<strong>Portrait of Men<\/strong>&#8216; is a vocal song, again there is quite little emotion in vocals. The atmosphere is quite calm, the concept is not quite clear.<br>The title track has a small played start. The first turn is quite predictable. Furthermore, the changes are generally nice. Beautiful long-lasting tones of the keys change to fast piano playing. For a moment you hear a touch of Focus. The changes, including trumpet playing, nice percussion and a nice piece of drumming keep coming. The acoustic instruments are beautifully interwoven is this delightful epic filled with all kinds of cool twists and details. Though not everything comes into its own because the sound of this cd is a bit too dull. This is really a pity, because the construction of this eight song is special. The concept is not quite clear, partly because most of the songs are largely instrumental. And it is precisely here that there are often delightful eccentric twists and turns, which makes &#8216;<strong><em>Into the wild<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; have to grow for a while. Hoewel de muziek over het algemeen een wat zwaarder karakter heeft, zijn er ook lichtere delen. Met onder andere gitaarspel, pianoklanken en het geluid van strijkers. Er is zelfs een behoorlijk mysterieus stuk ingelast. Pianospel en \u2018strijkinstrumenten\u2019 vormen de opbouw naar een fluisterend einde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het geluid van strijkinstrumenten geeft het begin van &#8216;<strong>Seven Doors<\/strong>\u2018 een melancholieke sfeer.<br>Het contrast komt van de wat zwaarder bespeelde (bas)gitaar. Bijzondere toegevoegde geluiden worden prima met tedere muziek vermengd. Er is een bijzondere combinatie van muziek en geluiden, ook de contrasten tussen rock en ingetogen delen is lekker groot. Al had dit beter tot zijn recht gekomen als de geluidskwaliteit beter was geweest. Het saxofoonspel is vrij ver op de achtergrond, maar mengt zich mooi in het geheel. Het geluid van de cimbalen is bij de zachter gespeelde delen goed. Bij de forte (luid gespeelde) stukken klinkt het te blikkerig. Dat is met name storend als er meer herhalingen worden gespeeld. Soms is de muziek een beetje chaotisch, en dan komt er best veel op je af. Maar dan is er weer een gave transitie naar een rustiger gespeeld deel. Ook hier zijn er allerlei geluiden toegevoegd, bijvoorbeeld kleine krakende geluidjes. Het einde is mooi minimalistisch. \u2018<strong>Criminal Kind<\/strong>\u2019 is een vocaal nummer. Maurizio Menendez hij zingt best snel, in zijn prettige stem klinkt minder emotie door dan je zou verwachten bij dit concept. De details van meerdere stemmen zijn leuk verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met uitgebreide instrumentale stukken, waarin ook lekkere bas grooves te horen zijn. Het nummer eindigt vrij plotseling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De eerste minuut verloopt neuri\u00ebnd, waarbij je het ademhalen hoort. Dan volgen er enkele muzieknoten. Na dit minimalistische stukje zijn er een groot aantal veranderingen. Sommige stukken neigen naar jazz, andere delen meer naar de rock. Het tempo blijft een tijd lang ongeveer hetzelfde. Door de razendsnelle veranderingen komt er best veel op je af. Toch is het nergens te veel. Ook \u2018<strong>Portrait of Men<\/strong>\u2019 is een vocaal nummer, weer is er vrij weinig emotie in zang. De sfeer is vrij rustig, het concept komt niet helemaal duidelijk naar voren.<br>De titeltrack heeft een klein gespeelde start. De eerste wending verloopt vrij voorspelbaar. Verder zijn de veranderingen over het algemeen leuk. Mooie langaanhoudende tonen van de toetsen gaat over naar snel pianospel. Even hoor je een vleugje Focus. De veranderingen, met onder andere trompetspel, leuke percussie en een tof staaltje drumwerk blijven komen. De akoestische instrumenten zijn mooi verweven is deze heerlijke epic die gevuld is met allerlei gave wendingen en details. Al komt niet alles helemaal goed tot zijn recht want het geluid van deze cd is iets te dof. Dit is echt jammer, want de opbouw van deze acht nummer is bijzonder. Het concept wordt niet helemaal duidelijk, dat komt deels doordat de meeste nummers grotendeels instrumentaal zijn. En juist daarin zijn er regelmatig heerlijke excentrieke wendingen, waardoor \u2018<strong><em>Into the wild<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 even moet groeien.
