Die sfeer blijft bestaan in ‘Media Gods (Including The Awakening’.
Ook ‘The Trial’ zit verrassend in elkaar.

Rick zingt vrij monotoon.

(85/100) (Progressive Promotion Records)

Facebook: Rick Miller
Bandcamp: Rick Miller

<span class="embed-youtube" style="text-align:center; is the latest (concept) album by Canadian multi-instrumentalist Rick Miller. On this prog album the music is sometimes calm, on other moments the metal comes to the surface. Besides that, there are classical elements.

The classical elements can be heard during the instrumental intro of ‘Correct To The Core‘. Especially the cello grabs me immediately, it is gloomy, but intense. Speed and volume increase, the music gets rocking character. The staccato rhythm makes the atmosphere a bit sober after all.
The vocals sound a bit depressed. After the sentence “We Google to a better day“, the music gets a bit lighter. The beautiful details are fantastically distributed over the headphones. Because of the bass grooves the atmosphere remains slightly depressed, while the keys provide a lighter touch. Vocals and music are in balance.
Some piano sounds first sparkle softly in the background, and come more to the fore later. In the meantime, the guitar playing is finger licking, the bass remains wonderfully present. After the classical influences have returned, the music becomes more cheerful. There are a lot of layers in music, not forgetting the drumming. This is also in the service of the whole. In short, this is a cool opening track. This epic is followed by three short songs.

The structure of ‘The Need to Believe‘ is a bit predictable. This is partly made up by the guitar playing, which is compelling with gusts. The build-up to the end seems to become very nice, but that is a bit disappointing.
‘Prelude to The Trial‘ starts with mysterious sounds, it is the sober cello that touches me again. When the cello can no longer be heard, the mysterious remains.

‘Binary Breakdown‘ is totally different, also the use of the string instruments, they sound more staccato now. When the rhythm becomes catchy, a kind of ‘classic meets (pop)rock’ arises. There are all kinds of special sounds of which you don’t know where they come from.
This flows seamlessly into ‘That Inward Eye Part 2‘, yet you can hear the twist. There’s flute playing in a melody you heard in ‘That Inward Eye Part 1‘. Again, there are beautiful sounds of the cello. Vocals and music are in balance and are almost surreal.
That atmosphere remains in ‘Media Gods (Including The Awakening)‘.
Surrealism continues with all kinds of special sounds. It is fascinating, and unpredictable. It seems as if you have ended up in a strange world or a strange dream. Yet it feels comfortable, and almost brings you into a kind of trance.
Also ‘The Trial‘ is surprising. You don’t know whether the text is the truth or fantasy. The music and various sounds are elusive. Yet everything forms a unity. There seems to be exhaustion in vocals and music, this gives a kind of rut. Then there is the beautiful guitar playing again, which seems to break the rut. This song fades out very slowly.

After a rather long silence the bonus track follows. This one is quite short and ends abruptly, but okay.

Rick sings quite monotonous. Not all songs end as nicely as they start. Too bad, otherwise this album would have a close to perfection. In every song the atmosphere is different, yet the songs fit together. The songs are so special that it’s not easy to put it into words. It’s intriguing, sometimes atmospheric, on other moments the rock/metal comes up. Whatever you want to call it, ‘Belief in the Machine‘ is a very good album.

(85/100) (Progressive Promotion Records)

Facebook: Rick Miller
Bandcamp: Rick Miller

Tracklist:
01 – Correct To The Core 11:35
02 – That Inward Eye Part 1 02:22
03 – Belief in The Machine 02:02
04 – The Land and The Sea 02:11
05 – The Need to Believe 05:39
06 – Prelude to The Trial 04:32
07 – Binary Breakdown 03:40
08 – That Inward Eye Part 2 03:28
09 – Media Gods (Including The Awakening) 04:22
10 – The Trial 09:55

Line-Up:
Rick Miller: Vocals, Keyboards, Guitars
Sarah Young: Flute
Mateusz Swoboda: Cello
Barry Haggarty: Stratocaster
Will: Drums and Percussion
