Op de eerste cd, \u2018<strong><em>Essentially Acoustic<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 staan akoestische versies van nummers die eerder op diverse cd\u2019s verschenen. Oliver heeft hiervoor zelf alles gezongen en ingespeeld, behalve hoorns en saxofoons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Natuurlijk is deze mooie akoestische versie van \u2018<strong>Passion<\/strong>\u2019 minder rockend dan het origineel, maar het heeft wel degelijk pit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In \u2018<strong>Primeval<\/strong>\u2019 hoor je gestapelde zang en gesproken zinnen. De percussie is bijzonder en de muziek heeft soms heel wat laagjes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De meeste fans zullen \u2018<strong>Time to Wonder<\/strong>\u2019 niet kennen, want dat komt van \u2018Tribe\u2019, een album uit 2000.<br>Dit bijzondere intro krijgt licht poppy vervolg in mid-tempo. De prog invloeden blijven aanwezig. Het luistert comfortabel weg, maar toch hoor je dat het complex in elkaar zit. De blazers zorgen bijna ongemerkt voor een vrolijkere sfeer vlak voor het einde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ook het intro van \u2018<strong>E.G.O.<\/strong>\u2019 is bijzonder. Dit is \u00e9\u00e9n van de nummers waar orkestrale elementen zijn toegevoegd. Deze akoestische versie is super. Zang en muziek zijn, net al in de voorgaande nummers, overal in evenwicht. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Met grote regelmaat word ik geraakt door de emotie in Oliver\u2019s stem. Het akoestisch gitaarspel is soms klein of teder, andere keren heeft het meer pit. <br>De saxofoons en\/of hoorns van Andy Pendant zijn steeds mooi toegevoegd. Af en toe smelten ze samen met de muziek. Op andere momenten komt het wat meer naar voren, zoals bijvoorbeeld \u2018<strong>Addicted<\/strong>\u2019. Het einde is hier nu geweldig! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Het duurt even voordat ik \u2018<strong>Something<\/strong>\u2019 (van het album \u2018Addicted\u2019 2014) herken. Het tempo ligt veel lager en het bevat jazz\/blues invloeden. Doordat de poppy elementen van het origineel weg zijn, is deze nieuwe versie intenser. Het drumwerk is bijzonder, het vingerknippen is leuk toegevoegd. Weer zijn de blazers, en de gestapelde zang prima toegevoegd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In \u2018<strong>Holophinium<\/strong>\u2019 geniet ik onder andere van de mooie laagjes in het akoestische gitaarspel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oliver heeft \u2018<strong>9\/16<\/strong>\u2019 opgedragen aan zijn vader die op 9 september 2016 overleed. Nu Oliver de woorden zo breekbaar zingt, raken ze mij echt.  Nu heeft dit nummer de impact die erbij hoort\u2026kippenvel. Deze prachtige ingetogen versie heeft een mooie opbouw naar iets meer tempo en volume. Weer zijn de blazers subtiel toegevoegd. De prachtige wending zorgt voor een minimalistische maar gave opbouw naar het einde. <br>De a capella zang bij \u2018<strong>Elay<\/strong>\u2019 met \u2018vingerknippen\u2019 is anders dan anders. De wending laat net te lang op zich wachten. Het einde is misschien iets voorspelbaar. Maar dat kan ook komen doordat \u2018<strong>9\/16<\/strong>\u2019 zo onvoorstelbaar mooi was. Misschien was het beter geweest om de volgorde van \u2018<strong>9\/16<\/strong>\u2019 en \u2018<strong>Elay<\/strong>\u2019 om te wisselen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deze 11 nummers voelen natuurlijk aan, het lijkt wel of ze altijd zo bestaan hebben. <strong><em>Karibow<\/em><\/strong> staat erom bekend om van alles als instrument te gebruiken. Je hoort dus soms dingen die moeilijk te achterhalen zijn. Dat is \u00e9\u00e9n van de redenen dat dit album wel moet groeien, want steeds hoor je weer wat nieuws. \u2018Essentially Acoustic\u2019 is verrassend gespeeld en zeer goed opgebouwd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CD 2  \u2018Essentially Live\u2019<\/strong><br>Deze live-cd is een registratie van de MOnuMENTour in 2019, en is op verschillende locaties opgenomen.<br>Het intro heeft door de aparte geluiden een mysterieuze start. Je hoort applaus en dan gaat het concert met \u2018<strong>The Raining Silence<\/strong>\u2019 echt van start.  Het geluid het is aan de scherpe kant. Toch is het geluid behoorlijk goed, zeker voor een band met een beperkt budget. <br>Het geheel is goed verdeeld over de koptelefoon. In \u2018Private Babylon\u2019 is het geluid juist iets doffer. Toch komt het gave gitaarspel prima tot bloei.<br>Voor aanvang van \u2018<strong>District of Dignity<\/strong>\u2019 wordt Hayley Griffiths ge\u00efntroduceerd. Eerst horen we Oliver zelf zingen. Even later valt Hayley bij. Hun stemmen kleuren erg goed bij elkaar. Dat Hayley een prachtige stem heeft, dan weten veel prog liefhebbers al, want zij bekend van onder andere Karnataka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In \u2018<strong>The North Wall Tale<\/strong>\u2019 worden strak gespeelde delen (al dan niet met rusten) afgewisseld met virtuoze stukken. <br>Live komt alles goed tot zijn recht. Weer is er prachtig gitaarspel van Philipp Dauenhauer. Hij neemt in diverse nummers ook de achtergrondzang voor zijn rekening. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In de meeste nummers zijn er van allerlei leuke dingen toegevoegd, zoals gelach of een echo. De nummers worden op het einde over het algemeen wat langer gerekt.<br>Natuurlijk was ik al lang \u00e9\u00e9n met het concert. Maar bij \u2018<strong>Red Feathers<\/strong>\u2019 zie ik Oliver weer voor me met zijn vogelmasker op, en rode veren om zijn handen. Een damesstem die is ingezet als instrument, is in dit ingetogen nummer een aantal keer te horen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Na het prachtig klein gespeelde einde van het emotioneel beladen \u2018<strong>9\/16<\/strong>\u2019 verandert de sfeer al snel met het sing-a long nummer \u2018<strong>Believe<\/strong>\u2019. Het is heerlijk om deze verandering op cd mee te krijgen. Deze vrolijke sfeer blijft bestaan in \u2018<strong>Remember<\/strong>\u2019. Maar tijdens een klein gespeeld deel luistert het publiek in stilte verder.  Na \u2018<strong>Change\u2019 <\/strong>is<strong> \u2018The cry<\/strong>\u2019 een prima afsluitend nummer. Hopelijk opent deze live-cd nieuwe deuren voor <strong><em>Karibow<\/em><\/strong>. On the first CD, &#8216;<strong><em>Essentially Acoustic<\/em><\/strong>&#8216; are acoustic versions of songs previously released on various CDs. The percussion is special and the music sometimes has a lot of layers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most fans will not know &#8216;<strong>Time to Wonder<\/strong>&#8216;, because that comes from &#8216;Tribe&#8217;, an album from 2000. Maybe it would have been better to change the order of &#8216;<strong>9\/16<\/strong>&#8216; and &#8216;<strong>Elay<\/strong>&#8216;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These 11 numbers feel natural, it seems as if they have always existed like this. <strong>Karibow<\/strong> is known for using everything as an instrument. So sometimes you hear things that are hard to trace. That&#8217;s one of the reasons this album needs to grow, because every time you hear something new. Essentially Acoustic&#8217; is surprisingly played and very well constructed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CD 2 &#8216;Essentially Live<\/strong><br>This live CD is a registration of the MOnuMENTour in 2019, and has been recorded at various locations.<br>The intro has a mysterious start because of the separate sounds. You hear applause and then the concert with &#8216;<strong>The Raining Silence<\/strong>&#8216; really starts.  The sound is on the sharp side. Yet the sound is pretty good, especially for a band with a limited budget. <br>The whole is well distributed over the headphones. In &#8216;<strong>Private Babylon<\/strong>&#8216; the sound is just a bit duller. Still, the cool guitar playing blossoms very well.<br>Before the start of &#8216;<strong>District of Dignity<\/strong>&#8216; Hayley Griffiths is introduced. First, we hear Oliver singing himself. A bit later Hayley joins in. Their voices colour very well together. Many prog lovers already know that Hayley has a beautiful voice, because she is known from Karnataka and others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In &#8216;<strong>The North Wall Tale<\/strong>&#8216; tightly played parts (with or without rest) are alternated with virtuoso pieces. <br> Live everything comes into its own. Again, there is beautiful guitar playing by Philipp Dauenhauer. He also takes care of the background vocals in several songs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In most of the songs all kinds of nice things are added, like laughter or an echo. The songs are generally stretched a bit longer at the end.<br>Of course, I was one with the concert for a long time. But at &#8216;<strong>Red Feathers<\/strong>&#8216; I see Oliver in front of me again with his bird mask on, and red feathers around his hands. A lady&#8217;s voice that has been used as an instrument, can be heard a number of times in this subdued song. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the beautifully played small end of the emotionally charged &#8216;<strong>9\/16<\/strong>&#8216;, the atmosphere soon changes with the sing-a-long song &#8216;<strong>Believe<\/strong>&#8216;. It&#8217;s wonderful to hear this change on CD. This cheerful atmosphere remains in &#8216;<strong>Remember<\/strong>&#8216;. But during a small played part the audience continues listening in silence.  After &#8216;<strong>Change<\/strong>&#8216; &#8216;<strong>The cry<\/strong>&#8216; is a fine ending song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully this live CD will open new doors for <strong>Karibow<\/strong>.
