Drifting Sun<\/em><\/strong> is een studio band uit Engeland. Hun prog rock is soms atmosferisch of juist stevig, dan weer licht theatraal. De band bestaat sinds begin jaren \u201990, en heeft maar liefst 21 cd\u2019s\/ep\u2019s uitgebracht. Sommige nummers waren als een virtuele B kant van een digitale singel. Deze zijn nooit op een fysieke cd uitgebracht. Tijd voor een compilatie waarop de nummers staan die eerder niet op een fysieke cd uitkwamen. Dit album heeft de naam \u2018Singled Out<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 meegekregen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Silent in Shame<\/strong>\u2019 start met pianoklanken. Peter Falconer zingt zijn tekst met overtuiging. Je hoort zijn verdriet en wanhoop. Zijn stem en pianoklanken vormen een goede match.
Op \u2018Singled Out<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 staan een paar hele korte, instrumentale nummers. \u2018Emphasis (For Sienna Joy)<\/strong>\u2019 is er \u00e9\u00e9n van. Dit bevat een mooie mix van toetsen en snaren.
De herkenbare hoge snelle pianotonen horen bij \u2018Vagabond<\/strong>\u2019. Dit wordt mooi afgewisseld met rockend gitaarspel en drums waar soms een lichte echo op zit. Er zijn kleine details in de percussie. Het geheel is prima verdeeld over de koptelefoon. Dit nummer sterft langzaam weg.
Rustig gespeelde delen en rock wisselen elkaar op dit album af. Het gitaarspel valt keer op keer positief op. Dat geldt zowel voor de rockende delen als de meespelende en ingetogen stukken. \u2018Atlantis<\/strong>\u2019 staat als bonustrack op \u2018Twilight\u2019. Muziek en (samen)zang zijn gevoelig gebracht. Er klinkt emotie door in de woorden die Peter Falconer zingt. De emotie, zowel in zang als in muziek, wordt niet intenser. De opbouw is rustig gehouden, er zijn hier vrij weinig wendingen. Het geheel is rustig en dromerig, en eindigt in een fade out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hierna volgen drie korte, instrumentale nummers. \u2018Bubble<\/strong>\u2019 is door het pianospel vrij teder. De emotie is anders in \u2018A Year in Black<\/strong>\u2019 want de piano is niet alleen luider, maar ook anders bespeeld. In dit nummer zelf en in de onderlinge korte nummers is er variatie genoeg.
Want \u2018The Blond Ghost<\/strong>\u2019 is weer heel anders. Hier is de poppy\/ elektronische kant van de toetsen aanwezig.
Na deze drie korte nummers volgt de epic \u2018Cascading Tears<\/strong>\u2019. Weer is er rustig pianospel tijdens het intro. Tempo en volume gaan omhoog, dat sluit aan bij de tekst. Deze veranderingen verlopen vrij geleidelijk. Rock, licht poppy elementen en elektronische klanken worden vermengd dan wel afgewisseld. De zang is soms staccato, al dan niet gestapeld. Instrumentale en vocale stukken wisselen elkaar af. Door alle wendingen is deze track boeiend van opzet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Tijdens het intro van \u2018Last Supper<\/strong>\u2019 is er pianospel. Als tempo en volume toegenomen zijn, komt het orgel op de voorgrond. Het geluid van met name de ritmesectie klinkt hier een beetje retro. Het rockende gitaarspel is iets troebel en heeft de sfeer van een vintage gitaar. De wending naar klein gespeeld stuk is mooi ingevoegd. Er zijn diverse veranderingen in tempo en volume. Daarnaast lijkt de inspiratie vanuit verschillende decennia te komen. Ook van dit instrumentale nummer wordt het einde weggedraaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tot slot hoor je \u2018Closure<\/strong>\u2019, deze bestaat uit gevarieerde pianoklanken. Jammer dat het einde wordt weggedraaid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drifting Sun<\/em><\/strong> heeft ervoor gekozen om nummers vanaf 2015 op deze cd te gebruiken. Ze zijn vooral de laatste jaren enorm productief geweest, dus was er materiaal genoeg. Er is behoorlijk wat variatie van rock, met heerlijke gitaarspel tot klein gespeelde pianopartijen. De piano speelt een belangrijke rol op deze cd. \u2018Singled Out<\/em><\/strong>\u2019 voelt als een verzamel-cd en geeft zodoende een mooi overzicht van de afgelopen vijf jaar. Graag kom ik even terug op het album \u2018Twilight\u2019. Drifting Sun<\/em><\/strong> heeft een crowdfunding aktie opgezet tot 21 maart 2020. Met als doel om dit album op vinyl uit te brengen. En dat is het voor het eerst dat er een Drifting Sun<\/em><\/strong> album op vinyl gaat verschijnen.

The band exists since the early 90’s, and has released no less than 21 CD’s\/ep’s. Some songs were like a virtual B side of a digital single. These have never been released on a physical CD. Time for a compilation of the songs that were previously not released on a hard copy. This album has been given the name ‘Singled Out<\/em><\/strong>‘.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silent in Shame<\/strong>‘ starts with piano sounds. Peter Falconer sings his lyrics with conviction. You hear his sadness and desperation. His voice and piano tones is a good match.
On ‘Singled Out<\/em><\/strong>‘ there are a few very short, instrumental songs. Emphasis (For Sienna Joy)<\/strong>‘ is one of them. It contains a nice mix of keys and strings.
The recognizable high fast piano notes belong to ‘Vagabond<\/strong>‘. This is nicely alternated with rocking guitar playing and drums with sometimes a slight echo. There are small details in the percussion. The whole is well distributed over the headphones. This song slowly dies away.
Quietly played parts and rock alternate on this album. The guitar playing is convincing again and again. This goes for the rocking parts as well as the playing along and subdued pieces. Atlantis<\/strong>‘ is on ‘Twilight’ as a bonus track. Music and (harmony) vocals have been brought in a sensitive way. There is emotion in the words Peter Falconer sings. The emotion, in vocals as well as in music, does not become more intense. The build-up has been kept calm, there are relatively few twists and turns here. The whole is quiet and dreamy, and ends in a fade out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three short, instrumental songs follow. ‘Bubble<\/strong>‘ is quite tender because of the piano playing. The emotion is different in ‘A Year in Black<\/strong>‘ because the piano is not only louder, but also played differently. In this song itself and in the mutual short songs there is enough variation.
For ‘The Blond Ghost<\/strong>‘ is very different again. Here the poppy\/electronic side of the keys is present.
After these three short tracks follows the epic ‘Cascading Tears<\/strong>‘. Again, there is quiet piano playing during the intro. Tempo and volume go up, that matches the lyrics. These changes are quite gradual. Rock, light poppy elements and electronic sounds are mixed or alternated. The vocals are sometimes staccato, stacked or not. Instrumental and vocal pieces alternate. Because of all the twists and turns this track is fascinating. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the intro of ‘Last Supper<\/strong>‘ there is piano playing. When tempo and volume have increased, the organ comes to the foreground. The sound of especially the rhythm section sounds a bit retro here. The rocking guitar playing is a little cloudy and has the atmosphere of a vintage guitar. The turn to small played piece is nicely inserted. There are several changes in tempo and volume. Besides that, the inspiration seems to come from different decades. Also, from this instrumental song the end is turned away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, you hear ‘Closure<\/strong>‘, this consists of varied piano sounds. It is a pity that the end is turned away. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Drifting Sun<\/em><\/strong> has chosen to use songs from 2015 on this CD. They are especially in recent years enormously productive, so there was plenty of material. There is quite a bit of variation from rock, with delicious guitar playing to small played piano parts. The piano plays an important role on this CD. ‘Singled Out<\/em><\/strong>‘ feels like a compilation CD and thus gives a nice overview of the past five years. I would like to return to the album ‘Twilight’. Drifting Sun<\/em><\/strong> has set up a crowdfunding action until 21 March 2020. With the goal to release this album on vinyl. And that’s the first time a Drifting Sun<\/em><\/strong> album will be released on vinyl.
