‘Last night in whitechapel’ is ingetogen en meespelend.

(95/100) (Butler Records)

Website: Magoria
Facebook: Magoria

<span class="embed-youtube" style="text-align:center; For the story behind Jack the Ripper (JtR) we go back to the year 1888. One night there was something dark near the fence of the Jewish cemetery (in the district Whitechapel). This was the body of a prostitute. Her throat had been cut, and her stomach had been ripped open so much that her intestines hung out. Jack the Ripper struck for the first time.
An extended cast brings the story of JtR to life with this rock opera.

‘Whitechapel‘ starts very quietly with piano playing and sampled sounds, then the story gets a different twist due to a scream. Inge Rijnja’s vocals are beautifully clear. She sings the role of Catherine Eddowes. After a long rest the classical music softly continues, this is combined with several layers of vocals. The high vocals are without words, but do come in.

The guitar work of ‘Legend of the serial killer scene‘ is fantastic. Slowly the metal influences come to the surface. Zora Cock ’tells’ the story as Story Teller. Because of the high tempo she sings, it is quite though to understand everything. In the textbook you can find who sings what, this will certainly help you to get the story in its entirety.

‘Prince Albert Victor‘ has a classically oriented start. The first piece is sung by Nadine Pruim in the role of Annie Crook. She was the Catholic girl the Protestant Prince Victor secretly married. That was a disgrace to the English dynasty. When she was pregnant, she was taken to a psychiatric institution. She had no idea who her husband really was, so she didn’t understand what was happening to her. After a nice turn to melodic rock, Jan Willem Ketelaers plays the role of this prince. He sings with emotion, because he realizes the danger. And rightly so, because Queen Victoria (his grandmother) wants to get rid of all the women who knew about the scandal.

The mean voice in ‘Mary Ann Nichols‘ comes from Jack The Ripper (by Rodney Blaze). Several characters have their part in this song, including prostitute Mary Jane Kelly. She earned by taking care of Annie Crook after childbirth, that’s why she has to die. Several people sing against each other, of course the whole thing sounds restless. The turn to a lightly played part is fantastic.

The story of this well-constructed rock opera continues. On September 8th 1888 Jack the Ripper made his second victim. This gruesome murder was even more cruel than the first. Even if you don’t ‘study’ the lyrics and/or you don’t understand everything, you are caught up in music and singing. In spite of the sinister story, it’s great to turn up the volume quite a bit. The changes in atmosphere are sublime, the build-up to the end of ‘Annie Chapman’ is phenomenal.
In ‘Don’t mention his name‘ Mary Jane Kelly and Catherine Eddowes worry about their safety. The colour of these ladies’ voices differs enormously, yet these voices fit together nicely. Mary Catherine has completely immersed herself in her role as Mary Jane Kelly, she sings here with enormous power and perseverance. But in ‘More to life than this’ her voice has a nice mix of tenderness with a rough edge.
Jack the Ripper visits Queen Victoria in ‘Confrontation‘. She wants him to stop this. The intensity of the dialogue increases and the music follows this path.

CD2
Sampling of various sounds, including the ringing and striking of the church bell, together with classical music build up the tension in ‘Overture jtr1888‘.

There is commotion in the city and among the main characters, which can be heard in vocals and music. These remain in balance, as do the relationship between the classical elements, the rock/metal, and the instruments. There are many cool changes in volume and tempo. In short, the whole is fantastic and compelling.

Suddenly there is a whole different atmosphere, this cheerful atmosphere belongs in ‘Pub‘. This increases the contrast of the gloomy thoughts of ‘Mary Jane Kelly in ‘Dignified woman‘. This sounds full of conviction and full of emotion. The music beautifully complements this, including the piano and the sound of strings. In this way every song has its own emotion. Everyone experiences this history in a different way. Meanwhile Jack the Ripper continues, the mean sound in his voice remains. This ensures even more experience of the story, especially during the spoken words in ‘From Hell‘. There he reads the letter he is supposed to have written.
‘Last night in whitechapel‘ is subdued and compelling. When the music stops, the church bell strikes. This builds up the tension, this tension curve continues in ‘Mary Jane Kelly‘. JtR wants to strike for the last time. The listener gets a ‘peek’ into his way of thinking, I believe every word. The sudden, tight end is sublime.

‘Freedom of London‘ starts a cappella, the atmosphere is more relaxed. JtR’s voice is not sounding mean anymore. Tempo and volume change from time to time, and the atmosphere changes with it. You feel like this will be the last song. The vocals of various characters and the music provide a great build-up to the end.
