Mark Bogert first gained fame as a guitarist with Knight Area (2012-2023), which Magoria joined in 2019. He also regularly performs as a session musician. Last year, he replaced John Mitchell, the guitarist of the British progressive rock band Arena. Last year, he was named \u2018Guitarist of the Year in the Benelux\u2019 by Gitarist magazine. Despite his busy schedule, Mark still found time to record a new album. On this album, he doesn\u2019t play guitars only, but also bass and piano. ‘Antiquity Neon’ will be released on 24 October via Construction Records.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Right from the start of \u201cThermal Properties\u201d, the distribution of the music over the headphones is beautiful. The sound is a fraction duller than expected. Although the music has a touch of pop, you can immediately hear that this is an album by a rock guitarist. There are some enjoyable twists and surprises. But of course, there is a lot of guitar playing. At times, the guitar playing is pleasantly screechy. After a short, \u201cmilder\u201d section, this opening track ends a little too abruptly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Mercury Glow’ has a warm atmosphere. Most of the twists and turns are gradual, and the music is quite complex in structure, almost unnoticed. The drums have a warm sound, and the differences in pitch between the drums can be heard. After a rocking section, there is a surprising transition to a calm piece. A few twists and turns later, the music slowly fades out.
The first part of \u201cChemically Inactive\u201d is catchy, with lovely details in the percussion. After that, the tempo is quite high. This is interspersed with compelling and\/or catchy elements. Different parts of the melody and\/or rhythm return from time to time.
Each track contains plenty of twists and turns, and there is also a lot of variation. This is especially true of the wonderful guitar playing. This variation is not only between the different tracks, but also within a track. For example, \u201cFuture Invention\u201d has a compelling start, but there are also uptempo\/hectic parts. Despite the differences, the harmony is preserved.
There are not only changes in tempo and volume, but also between high and low tones. This can be heard in \u201cWhisky a Go Go\u201d, among others, in which the drumming again plays an important role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the calm \u201cLight Of Love\u201d, you can hear the fingers sliding over the strings. The gentle melody touches me. This is reinforced by Edward Reekers’ voice. The wordless (layered) vocals flow together with the music. This is particularly heartfelt so soon after his (far too early) passing. This tender song contrasts quite strongly with \u201cArtistic Shapes\u201d, but the change in atmosphere feels very natural. Almost imperceptibly, the tempo is quite fast at times.
Piano and guitar form a special, touching blend in \u201cThe Extinguishing Of Light\u201d. After the end of this last (actually too short) track, I let the silence sink in for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The difference in volume between the subdued and rocking parts could have been a bit greater, which would have increased the intensity of the music. Although the guitars are in the foreground, they are not too dominant. The balance between rhythm and melody is very good. \u2018Antiquity Neon\u2019 is a very varied album that is easy to listen to, yet complex in structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
