The Monokids is an energetic garage punk duo from Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Singer\/guitarist Michel occasionally plays the Theremin. Roelof handles the drums and percussion. The band has performed extensively, not only in the Netherlands and neighbouring countries, but also in England.
They have shared the stage with Zeke (US) and Digger and the Pussycats (Australia), among others. All this makes them feel like \u201cLucky Guys\u201d, hence the album title. The record is available both digitally and on vinyl. I was very lucky to receive the LP. The vinyl is just as flashy pink as the album cover.
A dare, but very successful choice. It’s a bit of a shame that the inner sleeve is completely white, but that’s understandable in terms of budget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Side A starts with \u201cCherry Kisses\u201d. After a short shoutout, there’s a rousing start. The tempo in the vocals and music stays high. You don’t miss the bass, because the guitar playing and drumming are very fine. The sound is a bit grubby, but that’s okay here. Just before the end, there’s a lovely musical rest. This short song fades out beautifully and slowly.
The band’s energy is also palpable during the up-tempo \u201cL.O.V.E\u201d. Due to the high tempo, not all of the singing is understandable, so I do miss the lyrics on the inner sleeve. The Theremin (with the sound of a \u2018singing saw\u2019) is surprising, but a pleasant addition.
At times, the tempo is a bit slower in \u201cMy Friend\u201d, but it remains catchy. The guitar playing is mostly pleasantly heavy in sound, and there are enjoyable details in the percussion. This last track on side A also fades out pleasantly slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last year, the digital EP \u201cDrei Wundersch\u00f6ne Melodien\u201d was released. The songs from this EP are on side B of the vinyl. It starts with the atmospheric \u201cThe Sun = # 1\u201d.
From the start, I automatically tap my foot on the beat. The line \u201cThe sun is number one\u201d invites you to sing along. When this song is played live, it’s sure will be a party. The chorus quickly sticks in your head. The handclaps add something extra to this fun atmosphere. At three minutes (and three seconds), this is the longest song on the record.
The sound in \u201cRock It\u201d is a bit grittier. This is especially noticeable when listening with headphones. There is a fun t distribution through the headset. The sound in \u201cPS \/ P love\u201d is also quite vintage. The tempo remains pretty rousing. This last song also ends
lovely. It’s a shame that the album is over, because even for vinyl, the running time is quite short. Garage punk is characterised by a simple musical structure. This is also the case here, but the songs are definitely well constructed!
The release party for \u201cLucky Guys\u201d is scheduled for 18 October in Eindhoven. After that, there are several more dates in their diary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
