The prog rock band Arena was founded by keyboardist\/vocalist Clive Nolan and Marillion drummer Mick Pointer. Thirty years ago, their debut album ‘Songs From The Lions Cage\u201d was released. This is being celebrated with an extensive tour through Europe. Their performance at De Bosuil (Weert) was on Ascension Day. Three quarters of an hour before the doors opened, fans were already waiting outside. Clive made the wait enjoyable by chatting with the people at the front of the queue. Just before the doors opened at eight o’clock, Damian Wilson joined him. He greeted the fans as they entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By nine o’clock, the venue was bustling with people. Fifteen minutes later, the lights dimmed and music played from a tape. Guitarist John Mitchell and bassist Kylan Amos came on first, followed by Clive and Mick. They started with \u201cValley of the Kings\u201d. So the debut album was not played in its entirety. The moment Damian appeared, he immediately made eye contact with the audience. His vocals and powerful outburts were (as always) immediately impressive. The instrumental part of this opening song also went very well, and the applause was well deserved. Damian then greeted the audience warmly. When he is on stage, there is always something to laugh about, such as the joke: \u2018We are coming to the end of the tour, and the band is still together.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bedlam Fayre<\/strong>
Songs from various albums were played, such as \u201cParadise of Thieves\u201d (from Double Vision) and \u201cBedlam Fayre\u201d (from Pepper’s Ghost). Damian enjoyed Clive’s excellent keyboard playing. Both Clive and John contributed to the vocals here.
After this, Clive took the floor and briefly told the story of how Arena came to be, doing so with humour. This was the introduction to \u201cHow Did It Come to This?\u201d.
Despite the subdued intro, Mick’s flute playing was barely audible. When the tempo of the music increased, Mick started drumming. John played fantastic guitar, which was rewarded with extra applause. Even at the calm end, the flute playing was hard to hear, but other than that, the sound was good. The lighting was well done and matched the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to non-verbal communication, the many twists and turns in the complex songs went very well. The band members clearly enjoyed the performance. Sometimes Clive told a story, other times Damian did. Both have a good sense of humour, and the anecdotes were regularly met with laughter. Not only from the fans, but also from the band members. The keyboard intro to \u201cMoviedrome\u201d was calm. In this song, every musician had a musical rest , Damian sang completely solo for a while, which was sublime! The transition to a calmly played part went smoothly. Damian sat on Mick’s rise, accompanied by Clive’s keyboard playing. John contributed to the vocals, and the harmonies were excellent. Once again, John managed to touch people with his guitar playing. The same was true of Damian’s subdued vocals. This epic was rightly rewarded with extensive applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serenity<\/strong>
As expected, Damian encouraged the audience to sing along to \u2018Whoo Hoo\u2019 in \u2018Time Capsule.\u2019 This was one of the songs in which the bass played an important role. The differences in pitch in the drums were already noticeable, but they also came through beautifully here.
Before starting \u201cThe Equation (The Science of Magic)\u201d, Damian talked about the pain in his leg, which prevented him from stage diving or jumping off the stage. That’s why he chose a different route to enter the hall and sing among the audience. It was hard to know where to look, because people wanted to watch both Damian and the musicians on stage. John and Kylan stood with their backs to each other, trying to push each other away. They were clearly enjoying themselves. During an instrumental piece, Damian (standing in the audience) enjoyed the band’s skills.
Clive dedicated the sensitive, instrumental \u2018Serenity\u2019 to Patrick, a deceased friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crying for Help VII<\/strong>
John also has a sense of humour, which he demonstrated in the way he introduced the band members. They then played \u2018The Tinder Box\u2019, parts of which were played and sung very fast. Clive said that \u201cLife Goes On\u201d would be the last song. After that, Arena would not leave the stage; they would play an encore after all. But no one was to be told. During this impressive song, Clive, John and Kylan provided the backing vocals. Even though the men remained on stage, there were plenty of cries of ‘We want more!
The encore consisted of songs from \u201cSongs from the Lion’s Cage\u201d. First was \u201cSolomon\u201d, with its quiet start. During the uptempo part, Clive and Kylan danced while playing. Finally, \u201cCrying for Help VII\u201d was played, with the audience singing along: \u2018Help me, help me\u2019. This started somewhat hesitantly, but later became loud and clear. At one point, the musicians stopped playing, and only singing could be heard. Shortly after this energetic interaction between Damian and the audience, the anniversary concert ended. For over two hours, the audience enjoyed beautiful old and newer Arena songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De progrock band Arena werd opgericht door toetsenist\/zanger Clive Nolan en Marillion drummer Mick Pointer. Dertig jaar geleden kwam hun debuutalbum \u2018Songs From The Lions Cage\u2019 uit. Dit wordt gevierd met een uitgebreide tour door Europa. Hun optreden in De Bosuil (Weert) was op Hemelvaartsdag. Drie kwartier voordat de deuren open gingen, stonden er al fans buiten te wachten. Clive maakte het wachten aangenaam, hij praatte met de mensen die als eerste in de rij stonden. Vlak voordat de deuren om acht uur open gingen, kwam Damian Wilson erbij. Hij begroette de fans bij het naar binnen gaan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tegen negen uur was het gezellig druk geworden in de zaal. Een kwartiertje later doofden de lichten en klonk er muziek via een tape. Gitarist John Mitchell en bassist Kylan Amos kwamen al eerste op, gevolgd door Clive en Mick. Zij begonnen met \u2018Valley of the Kings\u2019. Het debuutalbum werd dus niet integraal gespeeld. Op het moment dat Damian verscheen, maakte hij meteen oogcontact met de mensen. Zijn zang, en zijn power uithalen, waren (zoals altijd) meteen goed. Ook instrumentaal verliep dit openingsnummer prima, het applaus was terecht. Hierna begroette Damian de aanwezigen heel hartelijk, als hij op het podium staat valt er altijd wat te lachen, zoals de grap: \u201cWe komen aan het einde van de tour, en de band is nog steeds bij elkaar\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bedlam Fayre<\/strong>
Er werden nummers van diverse albums gespeeld zoals \u2018Paradise of Thieves\u2019 (van Double Vision) en \u2019Bedlam Fayre\u2019 (van Pepper’s Ghost). Damian genoot van het goede keyboard spel van Clive. Zowel Clive als John hadden hier een aandeel in de zang.
Hierna nam Clive het woord, hij vertelde kort over het ontstaan van Arena, dit deed hij met humor. Dit was de \u201copmaat\u201d voor \u2018How Did It Come to This?\u2019.
Ondanks het ingetogen intro, was het fluitspel van Mick nauwelijks te horen. Op het moment dat het tempo in de muziek toenam, begon Mick te drummen. John liet fantastisch gitaarspel horen, dit werd beloond met een extra applaus. Ook op het kalme einde was het fluitspel amper te horen, maar verder was het geluid goed. Het licht was goed verzorgd en sloot aan bij de muziek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Door de non-verbale communicatie verliepen de vele wendingen in de complexe nummers zeer goed. De bandleden genoten zichtbaar van het optreden. De ene keer vertelde Clive iets, een andere keer Damian. Allebei hebben ze een goed gevoel voor humor, er werd regelmatig gelachen om de anekdotes. Niet alleen door de fans, ook door de bandleden. Het keyboard intro van \u2018Moviedrome\u2019 was kalm. In dit nummer had steeds een ander muzikant even een rust. Heel even zong Damian helemaal solo, dit was subliem! De overgang naar een rustig gespeeld deel verliep mooi. Damian ging op de rise van Mick zitten, hij werd begeleid door het keyboard spel van Clive. John had een aandeel in de zang, de samenzang was prima. Weer wist John meningen te raken met zijn gitaarspel. Dat gold ook voor de ingetogen zang van Damian. Deze epic werd heel terecht beloond met een uitgebreid applaus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Serenity<\/strong>
Zoals verwacht moedige Damian de mensen aan om \u201cWhoo Hoo\u201d mee te zingen in \u2018Time Capsule\u2019. Dit was \u00e9\u00e9n van de nummers waarin de bas een belangrijke rol speelde. De toonhoogte verschillen in de drums waren natuurlijk al eerder te horen, maar kwamen ook hier mooi naar voren.
Voor aanvang van \u2018The Equation (The Science of Magic)\u2019 vertelde Damian over de pijn in zijn been, hij kon hierdoor niet stage diven of van het podium afspringen. Daarom koos hij een andere route om in de zaal in te gaan en tussen het publiek te zingen. Men kwam ogen te kort, want men wilde zowel naar Damian kijken, als naar de muzikanten op het podium. John en Kylan stonden met de ruggen tegen elkaar te spelen, waarbij ze elkaar probeerden weg te duwen. Ze hadden er duidelijk plezier in. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk genoot Damian (vanuit de zaal) van het kunnen van de band.
Clive droeg het gevoelige, instrumentale \u2018Serenity\u2019 op aan Patrick, aan een overleden vriend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Crying for Help VII<\/strong>
Ook John heeft humor, dat liet hij horen op de manier waarop hij de bandleden voorstelde, vervolgens speelden ze \u2018The Tinder Box\u2019, waarvan bepaalde delen heel snel gespeeld en gezongen werden. Clive vertelde dat \u2018Life Goes On\u2019 het laatste nummer zou zijn. Hierna zou Arena het podium niet verlaten, een toegift zouden ze toch wel spelen. Maar dit mocht men aan niemand vertellen. Tijdens dit indrukwekkende nummer hadden Clive, John en Kylan de achtergrondzang. Ondanks dat de mannen op het podium bleven, werd er volop \u201cWe want more geroepen!\u201d
Het toegift bestond uit nummers van ‘Songs from the Lion’s Cage\u2019. Als eerste \u2018Solomon\u2019, met zijn rustige start. Tijdens het uptempo deel stonden Clive en Kylan dansend te spelen. Tot slot werd \u2018Crying for Help VII\u2019 gespeeld, het publiek zong mee met: \u201cHelp me, help me\u201d. Dit begon wat aarzelend, maar dat werd later luidkeels. Op een gegeven moment hielden de muzikanten stil, en was er alleen maar zang te horen. Kort na deze energieke wisselwerking tussen Damian en het publiek eindigde dit jubileum concert. Men kon ruim twee uur genieten van de mooie oude en nieuwere Arena nummers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
