It is impossible to mention the best concerts, because how do you compare them? The concerts I attend are very diverse. Sometimes acoustic, another time a “big load of noise”. From blues rock, to hard rock, prog\/symphonic rock, with or without a touch of metal. I also went to very different concerts in 2024. Therefore, the style of my most memorable concerts is varied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second concert I attended this year was Imaginaerium’s concert. This project was founded by singer Laura Piazzai, composer Clive Nolan and guitarist Eric Bouillette. He passed away in 2021 and did not have the opportunity to attend the release of the album\/rock opera The Rise of Medici (2022). This rock opera, which is about the Italian banking family De Medici: Cosimo (1389 – 1464) and his wife Contessina, was for me one of the top albums of that year.
That’s why I was very much looking forward to the live premiere of \u2018The Rise of Medici\u2019, at the sold-out Parkvilla Theatre in Alphen aan den Rijn (The Netherlands). The first part of that evening consisted of acoustic versions from Clive’s impressive career.
After the pause, they played \u2018The Rise of the medici\u2019 in its entirety and non-stop. The choral and orchestral elements ran along via tape. But the characters were, partly by Andy Sears very well portrayed. Financial resources were limited, but despite that, this was a very credible rock opera.
Hopefully one day there will be a mega production of \u2018The Rise of Medici\u2019, this album certainly deserves that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From rock opera, I switch to one of the best rock\/metal guitarists in the Netherlands: Marcel Coenen. He’s been on stage for more than 35 years, the number of shows he’s played in almost running towards 1,000. These shows were both with metal cover bands (e.g. The Art Of Pantera) and with his own bands \u2018Sun Caged\u2019 and \u2018Godscum\u2019. He has also been on the podium with Ayreon as well. Several friends collaborated on his solo albums. He performed with some of them at De Bosuil (in Weert, The Netherlands) in March.
It is always impressive to see Marcel play, his fingers seem to run effortlessly over the strings. This gig was diverse, there was not \u2018just\u2019 metal to be heard. From his album \u2018Resurrection\u2019, he played instrumental compelling \u2018Zone Sombre\u2019, which he wrote after his heart attack. The emotion with which he played was visible and palpable.
Esther Brouns sang \u2018Still Bleeding\u2019 from the album \u2018Colour Journey\u2019. Originally, this was sung by Weert-based Joyce Dijkgraaf. She passed away some years ago as a result of a car accident; she is still missed. This also touched a sensitive nerve with me, as I knew Joyce since she was a little girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have seen many musicians a number of times live. One of them is blues\/rock guitarist\/singer Henrik Freischlader.
That day (in April), Armin Alic, the regular bass player, was sick. Fortunately, this concert could go ahead, as Ren\u00e9 P\u00fctz was able to fill in. Henrik always gives the musicians all the space they need to show their skills, as was the case at this concert. The contribution of keyboard player Moritz Fuhrhop alias Mr Mo was sublime. Especially when Henrik and he challenged each other. Who could have imagined then I would never see Mr. Mo again? He passed away in November, due to a terrible disease. He was only allowed to reach the age of 44. This really took my breath away\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alice Cooper was one of the big names at Bospop Friday. The set-up was ahead of schedule, everything was almost ready. Rented meadows had been prepared by volunteers as a parking area. The road signs were there, everything was in place. But\u2026 that day, it rained incessantly. There was much, much more rain than predicted. You can plan all you want\u2026 but there was no way to plan ahead of this. The car parks were flooded, the roads couldn’t cope with the water, it was chaos around Weert. And the festival field\u2026 it had become one big mudpool. The water reached well over the ankles, what a drama that was.
Behind the scenes people were working to solve it for the next day. And me \u2026 I especially enjoyed Alice Cooper. As a child, I was almost afraid to look at him. His black make-up, the look in his eyes \u2026 but his music \u2026 that still drew me in. So I was looking forward to this performance. I did wonder though, is he really still able to rock, or is it \u2018\u2019forgotten glory\u2018\u2019 ? Well he can definitely still rock, his timing, his facial expressions\u2026 amazing!!! I’ll never forget this!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cesar Zuiderwijk, who hasn’t seen him live with the Golden Earring? For me, this band wasn’t a newcomer, but a band that “always has been there”. I also saw him live several times with the band Sloper, for instance in early October. Less than two weeks later, he was back at De Bosuil. This time he was alone, for his theatre show The Naked Truth, a seated concert. Quite surprisingly, he started playing on a Green egg (barbecue), this sounded much better than expected. He told numerous anecdotes, which he did in such a way that it didn’t get boring. Sometimes you could almost see things happening in front of you. He created a homely atmosphere with this. At other times, there was a lot of laughter. He involved several people from the audience. When he saw me taking notes, he asked, “Do you work at the newspaper?” Pooh how I blushed.
On various kits he drummed, everything matched nicely. Cesar proved that he is not \u2018\u2019only\u2018\u2019 a good drummer, but also a born entertainer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Next year, I’m sure I’ll be attending very diverse concerts again, there are already several scheduled in my calendar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De 5 Beste Concerten van 2024<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Het is onmogelijk om de beste concerten te noemen, want hoe vergelijk je ze met elkaar? De concerten die ik bezoek zijn heel divers. Soms akoestisch, een andere keer een \u201cflinke bak herrie\u201d. Van blues rock, naar hard rock, prog\/symfonische rock, met of zonder vleugje metal. Ook in 2024 heb ik hele verschillende concerten bezocht. Daarom is de stijl van mijn meest memorabele concerten gevarieerd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het tweede concert dat ik dit jaar bezocht was het concert van Imaginaerium. Dit project is opgericht door zangeres Laura Piazzai, componist Clive Nolan en gitarist Eric Bouillette. De koorzang en de orkestrale elementen liep via een tape mee. Maar de personages werden, mede door Andy Sears zeer goed neergezet. De financi\u00eble middelen waren beperkt, maar ondanks dat, was dit een zeer geloofwaardige rockopera. Hopelijk komt er ooit nog eens een mega productie van \u2018The Rise of Medici\u2019, dat verdient dit album zeker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Van een rock opera schakel ik over naar \u00e9\u00e9n van de beste rock\/metal gitaristen van Nederland: Marcel Coenen. Hij staat al meer dan 35 jaar op de planken, het aantal shows waarin hij meespeelde loopt bijna richting de 1.000. Deze shows waren zowel met metal coverbands (bijvoorbeeld The Art Of Pantera) als met eigen bands \u2018Sun Caged\u2019 en \u2018Godscum\u2019. Ook met Ayreon stond hij al diverse keren op het podium. Aan zijn solo albums werkten diverse vrienden mee. Met een deel hiervan stond hij in maart in De Bosuil (in Weert). Steeds is het indrukwekkend om Marcel te zien spelen, zijn vingers lijken als vanzelf over de snaren te gaan. Dit optreden was divers, er was niet \u201calleen maar\u201d metal te horen. Van zijn album \u2018Resurrection\u2019 speelde hij instrumentale meeslepende \u2018Zone Sombre\u2019, wat hij schreef na zijn hartaanval. De emotie waarmee hij speelde was zichtbaar en voelbaar. Esther Brouns zong \u2018Still Bleeding\u2019 van het album \u2018Color Journey\u2019. Oorspronkelijk werd dit ingezongen door de Weertse Joyce Dijkgraaf. Zij overleed een aantal jaar geleden als gevolg van een auto-ongeluk, ze wordt nog steeds gemist. Bij mij raakte dat ook een gevoelige snaar, want ik kende Joyce vanaf dat ze klein meisje was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veel muzikanten heb ik al een aantal keer live gezien. Een daarvan is blues\/rock gitarist\/zanger Hendrik Freischlader. Die dag (in april) was Armin Alic, de vaste bassist ziek. Gelukkig kon dit concert doorgaan, want Ren\u00e9 P\u00fctz kon invallen. Henrik geeft de muzikanten altijd alle ruimte om hun kunnen te laten horen, zo ook bij dit concert. Het aandeel van toetsenist Moritz Fuhrhop alias Mr. Mo was subliem. Zeker toen Henrik en hij elkaar uitdaagden. Wie had toen kunnen bedenken ik Mr. Mo nooit meer terug zou zien. Hij overleed in november, aan een vreselijke ziekte. Hij mocht slechts 44 jaar worden.. Hier was ik wel even stil van\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alice Cooper was \u00e9\u00e9n van de grote namen op Bospop vrijdag. De opbouw lag voor op schema, alles was bijna klaar. Gehuurde weilanden waren door vrijwilligers klaar gemaakt als parkeerplaats. De wegbewijzeringsborden stond er, alles klopte. Maar\u2026 die dag dag regende het onophoudelijk. Er viel veel, veel meer regen dan voorspeld. Je kan plannen wat je wilt.. maar hier viel niet tegen op te plannen. De parkeerplaatsen stonden blank, de wegen konden het water niet aan, het was een chaos rondom Weert. En het festivalveld.. dat was \u00e9\u00e9n grote modderpoel geworden. Het water kwam tot ruim over de enkels, wat een drama was dat. Achter de schermen werd er had gewerkt om het op te lossen voor de volgende dag. En ik? .. ik genoot vooral van Alice Cooper. Als kind was ik bijna bang om naar hem te kijken. Zijn zwarte make-up, de blik in zijn ogen.. maar zijn muziek.. dat bleef toch trekken. Ik keek dus uit naar dit optreden. Wel vroeg ik me af, kan hij echt nog rocken, of is het \u201cvergane glorie\u2019? Nou hij kan zeker nog rocken, zijn timing, zijn mimiek\u2026 geweldig!! Dit vergeet ik nooit meer!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cesar Zuiderwijk, wie heeft hem niet live gezien met de Golden Earring? Voor mij was deze band geen nieuwkomer, maar een band die er \u201caltijd al was\u201d. Deze keer was hij alleen, voor zijn theatershow De Naakte Waarheid, een seated concert. Heel verrassend begon hij op een Green egg (barbecue) te spelen, dit klonk veel beter dan verwacht. Hij vertelde talloze anekdotes, dat deed hij op zo\u2019n manier dat het niet langdradig werd. Soms zag je de dingen bijna voor je gebeuren. Hij cre\u00eberde hier mee een huiselijke sfeer. Op andere momenten werd er flink gelachen. Hij betrok er diverse mensen uit het publiek erbij. Toen hij mij aantekeningen zag maken vroeg hij: \u201cWerkt u bij de krant?\u201d Poeh wat bloosde ik.. Op diverse kits drumde hij, alles sloot mooi bij elkaar aan. Cesar bewees dat hij niet \u201calleen maar\u201d een goede drummer is, maar ook een geboren entertainer. Volgend jaar zal ik vast weer hele diverse concerten bezoeken, er staan er al een aantal in mijn agenda.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
