Friday evening, November 8th, a double concert was scheduled at Parkvilla in Alphen aan den Rijn. This concert featuring Kristoffer Gildenl\u00f6w and Italian band Karmamoi, was organised by Serious Music Alphen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Time to Turn The Page<\/strong>
Very calmly, Kristoffer Gildenl\u00f6w and his band appeared on stage. \u2018Time to Turn The Page\u2019 (from his latest album \u2018Empty\u2019) started with Kristoffer’s tender and emotional vocals and guitar playing. The turn to more rock went well. Bassite Liselotte Hegt moved with the flow of the music. The turn back to minimalist part went sublime. So did the subdued way the song ended. Guitarist Joris Lindner’s backing vocals in \u2018Harbinger of Sorrow\u2019 were subtle but beautiful. Drummer Dirk Bruinenberg played gently where needed, and more rocking where allowed. Moreover, there were extended rests for him. One moment Kristoffer sang very softly, which he built up beautifully to more power. In both ways of singing, you could hear his emotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

In \u2018He’s not Me\u2019, Paul Coenradie produced slow and special sounds from his guitar with a bottleneck. Both he and keyboardist Paul van Acht had the backing vocals, their voices formed a fine blend. \u2018Down We Go\u2019 had an atmospheric start. Kristoffer whispered the first phrases, the music was suitably minimalist. The rhythm section still kept quiet, but their focus could be seen. Paul van Acht did the backing vocals, his high range suited the music perfectly. After eye contact, a turn to a rocking instrumental section followed. Guitarists Paul and Joris were facing each other, both playing with inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest and Ghost<\/strong>
The album \u2018Rust\u2019 was released on vinyl only in 2012. From this, the title track was played with the recognisable spoken sampling. Kristoffer and Paul’s interplay on guitar was compelling. For the CD version (2020), Kristoffer wrote \u2018Living Soil\u2019 which was played tonight.
A song from the album \u2018Ghost\u2019 was not to be missed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The closing track was the title track from the new album. Again, Paul got all kinds of special sounds out of his guitar. This time by first using the bottleneck on the strings near the pickguard. Then he used his pick, playing pianissimo (= very soft). Kristoffer’s soft, emotional vocals remained captivating. At the moments when he was not playing guitar, he used his hands for extra expression. The band received a much-deserved final applause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karmamoi<\/strong>
After the break it was time for Karmamoi, this prog rock band opened their first gig in the Netherlands with \u2018Your Name\u2019. Singer\/keyboardist Valerio Sgargi, seemed to have some problems with his in-ear, as he was repeatedly touching it. The vocal range of this classically trained (baritone) singer was good, but the sound in the hall was not always completely stable. Alessandro Cefal\u00ec’s bass playing was melodious. After a complex and rapidly played section, there followed a transition to a minimalist part. Alex Massari’s guitar playing was compelling. Valerio’s pronunciation was clear, moreover, he sang passionately. In the background of \u2018Black Hole Era\u2019 (from the album \u2018Strings from the Edge of Sound\u2019), you could hear the sounds of string instruments. Daniele Giovannoni drummed appropriately gently. When tempo and volume went up, he went along with this.
The complex turns were played well. In addition, the tracks contained nice details. Like in \u2018Tell Me\u2019, where in Alessandro showed beautiful details on the bass, Daniele played the cymbals with finesse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

‘I will come in Your Dreams<\/strong>
There was little interaction between them and little eye contact with the audience. Despite the beamer, therefore, there was a missing some visual attraction. Alex regularly had a smile on his face, but because he did not face the audience, it was hardly noticeable. Alessandro played quite often with his eyes closed, as if he was completely \u2018in\u2019 the music. He moved calmly with the beat of the music. The audience kept listening attentively, as they played and sang with passion. Moreover, the band members were well in tune with each other; people were rightly impressed with Karmamoi.
A few new songs were played including \u2018I’m not on your Side\u2019. Alex started on guitar, Valerio sang, playing guitar this time. The setlist was varied: \u2018I Will Come in Your Dreams\u2019 (with its classical elements) was largely subdued, while \u2018Sirio\u2019 was perhaps with most heavy song. The sudden ending of this was cleverly played.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Zealous Man<\/strong>
Not everywhere the beamer images seemed to match the songs. But during the new \u2018Eternal Mistake\u2019, the visuals matched the lyrics just fine. This was one of the songs where there was evident interaction between Alex and Valerio, for instance. The band members did not loosen up in their performance, but the vocal and instrumental quality remained high, which is the most important thing after all. For instance, Valerio’s wordless vocals in \u2018Drop by Drop\u2019 were very good. In \u2018Zealous Man\u2019, he once again impressed with his vocals, accompanying himself with piano sounds. After the other band members played along, the music became heavier. The images on the projector matched vocals and music, making the song even more impressive. The minimalist piece was played and sung emotionally. A faster and louder instrumental piece formed the build-up to the end. For many, this was the first live introduction to Karmamoi, and it is definitely worth repeating.
The music of both Kristoffer Gildenl\u00f6w and Karmamoi suited the theatre, so this seated concert did not feel foreign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het dubbelconcert van Kristoffer Gildenl\u00f6w en Karmamoi was passioneel<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Vrijdagavond 8 november stond er een dubbelconcert gepland in Parkvilla in Alphen aan den Rijn. Dit concert met Kristoffer Gildenl\u00f6w en de Italiaanse band Karmamoi, werd georganiseerd door Serious Music Alphen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Time to Turn The Page<\/strong>
Heel rustig verschenen Kristoffer Gildenl\u00f6w en zijn band op het podium. \u2018Time to Turn The Page\u2019 (van zijn nieuwste album \u2018Empty\u2019) startte met de tedere en emotionele zang en gitaarspel van Kristoffer. De wending naar meer rock verliep goed. Bassite Liselotte Hegt bewoog mee met de flow van de muziek. De wending terug naar minimalistisch deel verliep subliem. Dat gold ook voor de ingetogen manier waarop het nummer eindigde. De achtergrondzang van gitarist Joris Lindner in \u2019Harbinger of Sorrow\u2019 was subtiel, maar mooi. Drummer Dirk Bruinenberg speelde zacht waar het nodig was, en meer rockend waar het mocht. Bovendien waren er voor hem uitgebreide rusten. Het ene moment zong Kristoffer heel zacht, dat bouwde hij prachtig op naar meer power. In beide manieren van zingen hoorde je zijn emotie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In \u2018He\u2019s not Me\u2019 haalde Paul Coenradie met een bottleneck langzame en bijzondere geluiden uit zijn gitaar. Zowel hij als toetsenist Paul van Acht hadden de achtergrondzang, hun stemmen vormden een prima blend. \u2018Down We Go\u2019 heeft een sferische start. Kristoffer fluisterde de eerste zinnen, de muziek was passend minimalistisch. De ritmesectie hield zich nog stil, maar hun focus was te zien. Paul van Acht deed de backing vocals, zijn hoge bereik paste prima bij de muziek. Na oogcontact volgde een wending naar een rockend instrumentaal deel. De gitaristen Paul en Joris stonden tegenover elkaar, beiden speelden met bezieling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rust en Ghost<\/strong>
Het album \u2018Rust\u2019 werd in 2012 alleen op vinyl uitgebracht. Hiervan werd de titeltrack met de herkenbare gesproken sampling gespeeld. Het samenspel op gitaar van Kristoffer en Paul was meeslepend. Voor de cd versie (2020) schreef Kristoffer \u2018Living Soil\u2019 dat vanavond gespeeld werd.
Een nummer van het album \u2018Ghost\u2019 mocht niet ontbreken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De afsluiter was de titeltrack van het nieuwe album. Weer haalde Paul allerlei bijzondere klanken uit zijn gitaar. Dit keer door eerst met de bottleneck over de snaren bij de slagplaat te strijken. Vervolgens gebruikte hij zijn plectrum, waarbij hij pianissimo (= heel zacht) speelde. De zachte, emotionele zang van Kristoffer bleef boeiend. Op de momenten dat hij geen gitaar speelde, gebruikte hij zijn handen voor extra expressie. De band kreeg heel terecht een dik verdiend slotapplaus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karmamoi<\/strong>
Na de pauze was het tijd voor Karmamoi, deze prog rock band opende hun eerste optreden in Nederland met \u2018Your Name\u2019. Zanger\/toetsenist Valerio Sgargi, leek wat problemen te hebben met zijn oortje, want hij zat er herhaaldelijk aan. De vocale uithalen van deze klassiek geschoolde (bariton)zanger waren goed, maar het geluid in de zaal was niet altijd helemaal stabiel. Het basspel van Alessandro Cefal\u00ec was melodieus. Na een complex en snel gespeeld stuk volgde er een overgang naar een minimalistisch deel. Het gitaarspel van Alex Massari was meeslepend. De uitspraak van Valerio was duidelijk, bovendien zong hij passioneel. Op de achtergrond van \u2018Black Hole Era\u2019 (van het album \u2018Strings from the Edge of Sound\u2019) hoorde je de klanken van strijkinstrumenten. Daniele Giovannoni\u00a0drumde passend zacht. Toen tempo en volume omhoog gingen, ging hij hierin mee.
De complexe wendingen werden goed gespeeld. Daarnaast bevatten de nummer mooie details. Zoals in \u2018Tell Me\u2019, waar in Alessandro mooie details op de bas liet horen, Daniele bespeelde de cimbalen met finesse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2018I will come in Your Dreams<\/strong>
Er was weinig onderlinge interactie en weing oogcontact met het publiek. Ondanks de beamer, miste men daarom een stukje visuele aantrekkelijkheid. Alex had regelmatig een glimlach op het gezicht, maar doordat hij de zaal niet in keek, viel dat nauwelijks op. Alessandro speelde vrij vaak met gesloten ogen, alsof hij helemaal \u201cin\u201d de muziek zat. Hij bewoog kalm mee met de maat van de muziek. Het publiek bleef aandachtig luisteren, want er werd met passie gespeeld en gezongen. Bovendien waren de bandleden goed op elkaar ingespeeld, men was terecht onder de indruk van Karmamoi.
Er werden een paar nieuwe nummers gespeeld waaronder \u2018I\u2019m not on your Side\u2019. Alex begon met gitaar, Valerio zong, en speelde deze keer gitaar. De setlist was gevarieerd: \u2018I will come in Your Dreams\u2019 (met de klassieke elementen) was grotendeels ingetogen, terwijl \u2018Sirio\u2019 misschien wel met meest heavy nummer was. Het plotselinge einde hiervan werd knap gespeeld.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Zealous Man<\/strong>
Niet overal leken de beamer-beelden aan te sluiten bij de nummers. Maar tijdens het nieuwe \u2018Eternal Mistake\u2019 pasten de beelden prima bij de tekst. Dit was \u00e9\u00e9n van de nummers waarin er duidelijk interactie te zien was tussen bijvoorbeeld Alex en Valerio. De bandleden werden niet losser in hun performance, maar de vocale en instrumentale kwaliteit bleef hoog en dat is toch het belangrijkste. Zo was bijvoorbeeld de woordeloze zang van Valerio in \u2018Drop by Drop\u2019 zeer goed. In \u2018Zealous Man\u2019 maakte hij nogmaals indruk met zijn zang, hij begeleide zichzelf met pianoklanken. Nadat de overige bandleden meespeelden, werd de muziek zwaarder. De beelden op de beamer sloten aan bij zang en muziek, waardoor het nummer nog meer indruk maakte. Het minimalistische stukje werd emotioneel gespeeld en gezongen. Een sneller en luider instrumentaal stuk vormde de opbouw naar het einde. Dit was voor vele de eerste live kennismaking met Karmamoi, en dat is absoluut voor herhaling vatbaar.
De muziek van zowel Kristoffer Gildenl\u00f6w en Karmamoi pasten in het theater, waardoor dit seated concert niet vreemd aanvoelde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
