Versatile guitarist\/composer\/producer Nick Fletcher went solo in 2021, his music is a mixture of progressive rock, jazz fusion and classical music. The new album is called \u2018A longing for home\u2019. This is the final part of a trilogy that is about finding our true place both in ourselves and in the universe. Although \u2018A longing for home\u2019 is connected to the previous two albums (\u2018The Cloud Of Unknowing<\/a>\u2019 and \u2018Quadrivium<\/a>\u2019), all three are easily to listen individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can already hear Nick’s style on \u2018Satori\u2019. He gives the keys as well as the rhythm section a lot of space. Almost imperceptibly, there are quite a lot of changes and details. The guitar playing is regularly fast and rocking. The other music comes across as a bit calmer (generally), yet everything remains balanced. The transition to a minimalist section is lovely. Just before the end, the cymbals are played very gently. Those who know \u2018The Cloud Of Unknowing\u2019 and \u2018Quadrivium\u2019 will notice that \u2018A Longing For Home\u2019 is in line with this. This can also be heard in, for instance, \u2018The Secret Of The Ascent\u2019. Apart from beautiful guitar playing, you can hear fast organ tones. Again, the rhythm section has an important role.
\u2018Joy turning into sorrow\u2019 starts with the warm sounds of classical guitar. This flows into a dreamy-sounding section, after which this short track ends. The atmosphere in \u2018Sitting in the sunboat\u2019 is very different. The twists and turns keep coming, often almost unnoticed. A calmer part contains compelling guitar playing. The instruments are balanced throughout. \u2018Her eyes of azure blue\u2019 has a romantic melody. The percussion, and the rest of the music, is suitably calm. Despite the gentle build-up, this compelling track contains several details. These come out best when listening with headset. The same goes for the slightly classical elements in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With its pleasant flow and repetitions, you almost don’t notice that \u2018A pathway to the hermitage\u2019 is also complex in structure. Occasionally the guitar playing is in the foreground, but the other instruments continue to play an important role. The music remains varied, light classical elements flow into the whole. The title track has a beautiful, spherical start with gorgeous details. I am triggered to listen intensely, the atmosphere remains special. The slow, intense guitar playing touches me. The guitar playing is largely in the foreground, and I like that very much.
The fast start of \u2018The sage, the monk and the scholar\u2019 is a contrast to the title track. Yet this prog song fits perfectly with the rest. This uptempo track demands to be played live. Already you can feel the live experience, and where the best moments will be. Not only the organ, but also the bass is pleasantly present. \u2018Crossing the sacred threshold\u2019 is a pleasant track with a very pretty ending. The wordless (classically trained) vocals in \u2018To hear the angels sing\u2019 are clear. This forms a good melange with the melancholic music<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The blend of prog and jazz fusion is good. The light classical elements mostly flow with the music. The guitar playing could have been a bit more or more often in the foreground at times. Despite this being \u2018only\u2019 instrumental songs, you have plenty to listen to. Because, at times, there are many layers and details. Certain elements in rhythm and melody recur in a number of songs. As a result, the album feels less complex than it is. That can be a disadvantage, but the advantage is that it is very comfortable to listen to. This accessibility makes parts stick in your head more easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
