Less than a fortnight ago, Cesar Zuiderwijk performed with the band Sloper at De Bosuil in Weert (The Netherlands) where the decibels flew around the ears of the visitors. On the weekday evening of 10 October, the theatre show De Naakte Waarheid (=The Naked Truth) was programmed, this was a seated concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the stage were a barbecue, a drum kit, and a trailer with materials, among other things. In the background hung a backdrop with a photo collage. A little earlier than planned, Cesar appeared on stage. The lights in the hall were still on. Although the conversations were quieting down, he said, “Keep talking though. I haven’t really started yet. I’m still rehearsing”. He played on the Green Egg, using the handle as a woodblock, everything sounded surprisingly good. \u2018The lights in the hall stay lit,\u2019 he told the audience, “I enjoy seeing who I’m playing for”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The photo patch was an important set piece that Cesar regularly talked about.
He did this in such a cosy way that you almost felt like you were sitting in a living room with a group of friends. Over an old photo from his teenage years came the following story: The high school he attended was quite conservative. His slightly longer hair (Beatle haircut) and his red wide-legged trousers were not accepted; he was kicked out of school. “That’s the best thing that ever happened to me,” Cesar said. Again he involved the audience, reading the thoughts of parents with any teenagers present, saying “Oh, don’t say that”.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He picked up a drumstick almost the size of a baseball bat. In slow motion, he demonstrated how the grip changed when he switched from snare drum to drum kit. His facial expressions and timing were genius; there was plenty of laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ringo Starr<\/strong>
As a young teenager he lost his father, to clear his mind he started listening to records. Meanwhile, with his hands, he tapped along to the beat of the music on his knees. He explained: “You have to feel music, also in your head, only then can you control your hands”. Humorously, he showed how he had assembled his first drum kit. This included large empty pickle cans, lids of washtubs and broomsticks. You could almost picture the little boy of the time playing along with the radio. “The neighbours never complained. If they had, I might not have even become a drummer\u2019, Cesar told. Anecdotes about his favourite drummers, such as Ringo Starr and Keith Moon, followed. This formed more or less the lead-up to the surprise show arranged for his 65th birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The story about the origins of his artist name Cesar could not be ignored. Following this, he told how Rinus Gerritsen once picked him up in a red Ford Mustang. There he met the members of Golden Earrings, from then on (1970) he was a member of the band. After his explanation of a good drumming style (\u2018flexible wrist\u2019), it was time for a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the lady smiles<\/strong>
After the break, Cesar first drummed fairly softly and quite slowly. The pitch differences between the drums and cymbals were easy to hear. He stood up and played on the bass drum that was set up behind him. He used the metal edges for extra sound effects. With his heels, he used his feet to operate the foot pedals of the drum kit.
The funny anecdotes kept coming, for instance about the one time he was too tipsy after a lunch (at a congregation) to play \u2018When the lady smiles\u2019. He is still embarrassed about that. The way he showed how he played roughly then was laughable. The story about the driving drum kit from the Tattoo in Ahoy was hilarious. You could see it happening in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the Golden Earring, he mentioned that they accepted each other’s mistakes (which they made live sometimes too). They usually joked about it, often without the audience noticing. Of course, they sometimes tried things out. If one did’t like it, they did not say that immediately. They gave each other space to try things out.
It was known beforehand that drummers were permitted to bring their sticks. Cesar chose two youngsters. One was allowed to play on the Green Egg, the other on the big drum kit. Cesar himself played on his home-made kit. Both boys were also allowed to solo, this went well, which I am sure they will never forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ALS<\/strong>
After a very laughable demo about composing, Cesar took his seat behind his drum kit one last time. Far too soon, the performance was over. To finish, Cesar drew the audience’s attention to ALS. As people know, guitarist George Kooymans suffers from ALS. Among other things, Cesar sold drum heads on which he had made drawings. He did this to raise money for research into this devastating disease. For those who were not there but would like to donate that can be done via the ALS website<\/a>. Nog geen twee weken geleden stond Cesar Zuiderwijk met de band Sloper in De Bosuil in Weert, daar vlogen de decibels om de oren van de bezoekers. Op de doordeweekse avond van 10 oktober stond de theatershow De Naakte Waarheid geprogrammeerd, dit was een seated concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Op het podium stonden onder andere een barbecue, een drumkit, en een aanhanger met materialen. Op de achtergrond hing een backdrop met een foto collage. Iets eerder dan gepland verscheen Cesar op het podium. Het licht in de zaal was nog aan. Hoewel de gesprekken verstomden zei hij: \u201cPraat nog maar door hoor. Ik ben nog niet echt begonnen. Ik ben nog aan het inspelen\u201d. Hij speelde op de Green Egg, waarbij hij het handvat als woodblock gebruikte, het geheel klonk verrassend goed. \u201cHet licht in de zaal blijft aan\u201d, vertelde hij, \u201cik vind het leuk om te zien voor wie ik speel\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De foto patch was een belangrijk decorstuk waar Cesar regelmatig over vertelde.
Dit deed hij op zo\u2019n gezellige manier dat je het bijna gevoel kreeg dat je met een groepje vrienden in een huiskamer zat. Over een oude foto uit zijn tienerjaren kwam het volgende verhaal: De middelbare school waarop hij zat was vrij conservatief. Zijn iets langere haar (Beatle kapsel) en zijn rode broek met wijde pijpen werden niet geaccepteerd; hij werd van school getrapt. \u201cDat is het beste wat mij ooit is overkomen\u201d, aldus Cesar. Weer betrok hij het publiek, waarbij hij de gedachten van ouders met eventueel aanwezige tieners kon lezen en zei \u201cO, zeg dat nou niet\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hij pakte een drumstick die bijna zo groot was als een honkbalknuppel. In slowmotion demonstreerde hij hoe de greep veranderde toen hij van snaredrum op een drumstel ging spelen. Zijn mimiek en timing waren geniaal, er werd volop gelachen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ringo Starr<\/strong>
Als jonge tiener verloor hij zijn vader, om zijn gedachten te verzetten ging hij plaatjes luisteren. Ondertussen tikte hij met zijn handen op zijn knie\u00ebn mee op de maat van de muziek. Hier vertelde hij over : \u201dMuziek moet je voelen, ook in je hoofd, pas dan heb je controle over je handen\u201d. Op humoristische wijze toonde hij hoe hij zijn eerste drumstel in elkaar had gezet. Dit bestond onder andere uit grote lege augurken blikken, deksels van wastobbes en bezemstelen. Je zag het jongetje van toen bijna voor je, hoe hij meespeelde met de radio. \u201dDe buren hebben nooit geklaagd. Als ze dat wel hadden gedaan, was ik misschien niet eens drummer geworden\u201d, aldus Cesar. Er volgden anekdotes over zijn favoriete drummers, bijvoorbeeld over Ringo Starr en Keith Moon. Dit vormde min of meer de aanleiding naar de verrassingsshow die voor zijn 65e verjaardag geregeld was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het verhaal over het ontstaan van zijn artiestennaam Cesar mocht niet ontbreken. Aansluitend vertelde hij dat Rinus Gerritsen hem ooit ophaalde met een rode Ford Mustang. Daar ontmoette hij de leden van Golden Earrings, vanaf toen (1970) was hij lid van de band. Na zijn uitleg over een goede drumstijl (\u201cflexibele pols\u201d) was het pauze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the lady smiles<\/strong>
Na de pauze drumde Cesar eerst redelijk zacht en vrij langzaam. De toonhoogte verschillen tussen de drums en cimbalen was goed te horen. Hij ging staan en speelde op de basdrum die achter hem stond opgesteld. Hij gebruikte hij de metalen randen voor extra geluidseffecten. Met zijn hakken bediende hij de voetpedalen van de drumkit.
De leuke anekdotes bleven komen, bijvoorbeeld over die ene keer dat hij na een lunch (bij een gemeente) te aangeschoten was om \u2018When the lady smiles\u2019 te spelen. Daar schaamt hij zich nu nog voor. De manier waarop hij liet zien hoe hij toen ongeveer speelde was lachwekkend. Het verhaal over het rijdende drumstel van de Taptoe in Ahoy was hilarisch. Je zag het voor je gebeuren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over de Golden Earring vertelde hij dat ze elkaars fouten (die ze ook wel eens live maakten) accepteerden. Meestal werd er onderling een grapje over gemaakt, vaak zonder dat ht publiek er erg in had. Natuurlijk probeerden ze ook wel eens dingen uit. Als de \u00e9\u00e9n dat niet mooi vond werd dat niet meteen gezegd. Ze gaven elkaar de ruimte om dingen uit te proberen.
Van te voren was bekend dat drummers hun stokken mee mochten nemen. Cesar koos twee jongeren uit. De ene mocht op de Green Egg spelen, de ander op de grote drumkit. Cesar zelf speelde op zijn home-made kit. Beide jongens mochten ook soleren, dit ging goed, en dat zullen ze vast nooit meer vergeten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ALS<\/strong>
Na een heel lachwekkende demo over componeren nam Cesar nog \u00e9\u00e9n keer plaats achter zijn drumkit. Veel te snel was het optreden voorbij. Tot slot attendeerde Cesar de aanwezigen op ALS. Zoals men weet heeft gitarist George Kooymans ALS. Cesar verkocht onder andere drumvellen waarop hij tekeningen had gemaakt. Dit deed hij om geld op te halen voor onderzoek naar deze slopende ziekte. Voor wie er niet bij was, maar wel wil doneren dat kan via de website van ALS<\/a>.
