Sloper is a project by drummers Cesar Zuiderwijk and Mario Goossens. In 2023, Peter Shoulder left the four-man formation. With the renewed and expanded line-up, the band sounds different. On Sunday 29 September, Sloper “2.0” gave a try-out show in Weert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The energetic Belgian rock band Beaten by Hippies was allowed to open the evening. Frontman Stephane Legat had a rough edge to his voice. He showed his own expressive way of performing. Despite the fast pace of songs like \u2018Velvet Hills\u2019 and \u2018Know for Sure\u2019, he was rather easy to understand. Christophe Collin’s guitar playing was very good.
‘Dark \u201cn Stormy’ had a slower but pleasant flow. The music got heavier and the volume went up. In all the songs, drummer Stephane Verbeurgt and bassist Bruno Jacobs were more than “only\u2019’ rhythm section. The latter was very agile while playing. In the quieter songs like \u2018Sidetracked in El Paso\u2019, they suited their energy, thereby telling a story together. This was one of the songs where Bruno and Christophe did the backing vocals. The intense guitar playing made this beautiful track extra special.
There was enough interaction between the band members themselves. But there was not much eye contact with the audience. Beaten by Hippies played a fine, varied set almost non-stop. They did that well, but people were primarily waiting for Sloper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sloper<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sloper opened with the rousing and familiar \u2018Mind Melter\u2019. The difference in drumming style between Mario and Cesar was immediately apparent. Jan Bas sang the first few songs without guitar, which gave him plenty of room to move. Fabio Canini played fabulous guitar. But the bass playing of the agile Bas Soetens was also impressive. Fabio and Bas had backing vocals in several songs, the blend of voices was good. Mario also had background vocals regularly.
The new line-up changed the “old” Sloper songs, they gained more depth. Where the music called for it, they played seriously. Where it could, there was time for an instrumental joke. Regularly, Mario and Cesar hit a cymbal of the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Never Alone<\/strong>
Between songs, Jan explained that this was a try-out show, so there might be a few mistakes. “Those will be played by Mario or Cesar”, Jan said with a smile. Gently, Cesar threw a drumstick towards Jan. Jan handed the stick to someone in the audience to which Cesar stood up and non-verbally demonstrated that it cost money. \u2018Never alone\u2019 is from the upcoming album. Here, the band could have engaged the audience to sing along with the wordless vocals. That suits this accessible track and would have increased the atmosphere. Mario started the new \u2018Eye of no return\u2019 with explosive drumming, Cesar’s response was equally explosive. The tension was building: Will the expected battle come now? But no, not yet. The subdued (experimentally arranged) instrumental piece was beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twilight zone<\/strong>
\u2018Twilight zone\u2019 started differently than expected. From the audience, people spontaneously sang along. Sloper did not respond to this. A pity on the one hand, but understandable on the other. The instrumental piece turned this into a very different but beautiful version of this big Golden Earring hit. The wordless vocals were also spontaneously sung along by the fans. If Sloper had anticipated this, they would have played the roof off. \u2018Pulverise\u2019 started with a fairly quiet flow. Jan and Mario encouraged the audience to clap along, which they did. Jan’s vocal outbursts remained good. The tempo was already high, yet it got faster and faster\u2026 wildly\u2026 but in control. Fabio called out, \u2018Forest Owl, let’s hear you!\u2019 .People clapped along to the beat of \u2018Struck by Lightning\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cesar stood up and played on the electronic drum kit set up vertically, Mario followed with an “answer”. They were lit up beautifully; this became the battle people had been waiting for. The men continued on their drum kit. They played various tempo and volume changes, everyone enjoyed this. Mario showed that he too can play pianissimo (=very soft), a little later he “went wild”. Cesar couldn’t stay behind. He started quickly and softly, but went faster and faster. Several times the audience responded enthusiastically to this delightful, long battle. Non-stop, the band started with \u2018Hold On\u2019, in which Bas played a fast piece. This song is also on their album \u2018Chancing Colors, which will be released 11 October.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changing Colors<\/strong>
First in the encore, \u2018Forgotten Memory\u2019 was played. You could hear the emotion on Jan’s voice. The complex turns went well, but the ending was quite unexpected. The title track was saved for last. \u2018Changing Colors\u2019 has a lovely rhythm and beautiful lyrics. Fabio and Bas played a battle opposite each other. Mario and Cesar played faster and faster. For a moment it seemed to end, but it continued. For a little while longer, people could enjoy all the good that Sloper has to offer, and that’s a lot because they almost broke down De Bosuil. A better try-out was hardly possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sloper brak De Bosuil bijna af<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Sloper is een project van de drummers Cesar Zuiderwijk en Mario Goossens. In 2023 verliet Peter Shoulder de viermansformatie. Met de vernieuwde en uitgebreidere samenstelling klinkt de band anders. Zondag 29 september gaf Sloper \u201c2.0\u201d een try-out show in Weert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De energieke Belgische rockband Beaten by Hippies mocht de avond openen. Frontman Stephane Legat had een ruw randje op zijn stem. Hij toonde een eigen, expressieve manier van performen. Ondanks het hoge tempo van nummers zoals \u2018Velvet Hills\u2019 en \u2018Know for Sure\u2019 was hij vrij goed te verstaan. Het gitaarspel van Christophe Collin was erg goed.
\u2018Dark ’n Stormy\u2019 had een langzamere, maar aangename flow. De muziek werd zwaarder en het volume ging omhoog. In alle nummers waren drummer Stephane Verbeurgt en bassist Bruno Jacobs meer dan \u201calleen maar\u201d ritmesectie. Deze laatste was heel beweeglijk tijdens het spelen. In de rustigere nummers zoals \u2018Sidetracked in El Paso\u2019 pasten ze hun energie aan, hierdoor vertelden ze samen een verhaal. Dit was \u00e9\u00e9n van de nummers waarin Bruno en Christophe de achtergrondzang deden. Door het intense gitaarspel deze mooie track extra goed tot zijn recht.
Er was genoeg interactie tussen de bandleden onderling. Maar er was weinig oogcontact met het publiek. Beaten by Hippies speelde bijna non-stop een mooie, gevarieerde set. Dat deden ze goed, maar men wachtte toch vooral op Sloper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sloper<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sloper opende met het opzwepende en bekende \u2018Mind Melter\u2019. Het verschil in de manier van drummen tussen Mario en Cesar was meteen te zien. Jan Bas zong de eerste paar nummers zonder gitaar, dat gaf hem alle ruimte om te bewegen. Fabio Canini liet gaaf gitaarspel horen. Maar ook het basspel van de beweeglijke Bas Soetens mocht er zijn. Fabio en Bas hadden in diverse nummers de achtergrondzang, de blend van de stemmen viel positief op. Ook Mario had regelmatig de achtergrondzang.
Door de nieuwe bezetting zijn de \u201coude\u201d Sloper nummers veranderd, ze hebben meer diepgang gekregen. Daar waar de muziek er om vroeg, werd er serieus gespeeld. Daar waar het kon was er tijd voor een instrumentaal grapje. Regelmatig sloegen Mario en Cesar op een cimbaal van de ander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never Alone<\/strong>
Tussen twee nummers vertelde Jan dat dit een try-out show was, waardoor er misschien een paar foutjes in zouden zitten. \u201cDie worden dan gemaakt door Mario of Cesar\u201d, zei Jan met een lach. Voorzichtig gooide Cesar een drumstick naar Jan. Jan gaf de stick aan iemand in het publiek waarop Cesar opstond en non-verbaal liet zien dat het geld kostte. \u2018Never alone\u2019 komt van het aankomende album. Hier had de band het publiek kunnen betrekken om met de woordeloze zang mee te zingen. Dat past bij deze toegankelijke track en had de sfeer vergroot. Mario startte het nieuwe \u2018Eye of no return\u2019 met explosief drumspel, het antwoord van Cesar was net zo explosief. De spanning werd opgebouwd: Komt nu de verwachte battle? Maar nee, nog niet. Het ingetogen (experimenteel opgezette) instrumentale stuk was prachtig.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Twilight zone<\/strong>
\u2018Twilight zone\u2019 startte anders dan verwacht. Vanuit het publiek werd er spontaan mee gezongen. Sloper reageerde hier niet op. Aan de ene kant jammer, maar aan de andere kant begrijpelijk. Dit werd door het instrumentale stuk een hele andere maar mooie versie van deze grote Golden Earring hit. Ook de woordeloze zang werd spontaan meegezongen door de fans. Als Sloper hierop ingespeeld had, hadden ze het dak eraf gespeeld. \u2018Pulverise\u2019 startte met een vrij rustige flow. Jan en Mario moedigde het publiek aan om mee te klappen, dat deed men. De vocale uithalen van Jan bleven goed. Het tempo lag al hoog, toch werd het steeds sneller en sneller.. wild.. maar gecontroleerd. Fabio riep: \u201dBosuil, laat jullie horen!\u201d .Men klapte mee in de maat van \u2018Struck by Lightning\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cesar stond op en speelde op de elektronische drumkit die verticaal stond opgesteld, Mario volgde met een \u201cantwoord\u201d. Ze werden mooi in het licht gezet, dit werd de battle waarop men had gewacht. De mannen gingen verder op hun drumkit. Ze speelden diverse tempo-en volumewisselingen, iedereen genoot hiervan. Mario liet horen dat ook hij pianissimo (=heel zacht) kan spelen, even later ging hij \u201chelemaal los\u201d. Cesar kon niet achterblijven. Hij begon snel en zacht, maar ging steeds harder en sneller. Het publiek reageerde diverse keren enthousiast op deze heerlijke, lange battle. Non-stop begon de band met \u2018Hold On\u2019, waarin Bas een snel stuk speelde. Ook dit nummer staat op hun album \u2018Chancing Colors, dat 11 oktober uit zal komen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changing Colors<\/strong>
Als eerste in de toegift werd \u2018Forgotten Memory\u2019 gespeeld. Je hoorde de emotie op de stem van Jan. De complexe wendingen verliepen goed, maar het einde was wel erg onverwacht. De titeltrack werd als laatste bewaard. ‘Changing Colors’ heeft een heerlijk ritme en een mooi tekst. Fabio en Bas speelden tegen over elkaar een battle. Mario en Cesar speelden steeds sneller. Even leek het te eindigen, maar het ging verder. Nog even kon men genieten van al het goeds dat Sloper te bieden heeft, en dat is veel want ze braken De Bosuil bijna af.
