well-known in the prog world. &#8216;Why&#8217; is their melodic atmospheric prog debut album. This concept album is about the bio-industry. The story displays life (from birth to death) from the perspective of an animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;The Arrival&#8217; starts calmly with sampling and several layers of guitar playing. The calm vocals match the music. This takes place just after the animal&#8217;s birth, and his\/her view of the &#8220;world&#8221; around him\/her. Sampling is added during an instrumental piece. &#8216;I Can&#8217;t Get Out&#8217; has a bit more volume and the rhythm is catchy. The young animal wants to get out but can&#8217;t. You can hear the desperation in Volker Oster&#8217;s voice. The intro of &#8216;I Need A Wise Friend&#8217; is beautiful. Volker has a lot of diversity in his voice. He explains the suffering and loneliness of the animal in an intense way. Vocal parts are interspersed with instrumental pieces. Lighter and more heavily played parts alternate. Unnoticed, there are quite a lot of layers in the music. &#8216;Once In A While&#8217; contains a delicious amount of prog and various twists and turns; the ending is quite unexpected. During the intro of &#8216;The Petition&#8217;, the sound of plucking strings of stringed instruments can be heard. The unusual combination of instruments and the unexpected turns make you feel like you are being drown into the music. There are many details in both the vocal and instrumental parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8216;Calm Down&#8217; starts with a dreamy atmosphere; it seems like nothing is going on, but appearances are deceiving\u2026 The stacked vocals are subtle, but beautifully added. A &#8220;heart beat&#8221; is woven into the music. Very briefly, the music sounds distorted, this suits the added sounds. This special ending flows into the remarkable start of a song consisting of two parts. The monotonous sounds of &#8216;The Abandon&#8217; (the first part) match the sung words and the animal&#8217;s hopeless life. In the background, wordless vocals can be heard. Again, the details in the calm drumming stand out positively. Step by step, the music slows down, then there is a sudden turn to more pace and volume. The second part also contains several changes. In &#8216;The End&#8217;, emotion comes through in piano playing and (wordless) vocals. It touches me, especially when combined with the &#8220;heartbeat&#8221; heard at a given moment. The string instruments, piano playing and vocals give &#8216;Why&#8217; a sombre atmosphere. A transition to a warmer, instrumental piece follows. This extended piece is well filled with beautiful twists and turns. The vocals that follow remain balanced with the music. This is a deserved title track, as it is a beautifully long song, which takes on cinematic allure just before the end. The lyrics and sampled animal sounds in &#8216;The Dubiousness&#8217; make you realise again what this album is about. This is chosen so well that it is not predominant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The words on the album are well chosen, as they are not full of blame or protest. So the concept is definitely accessible. The emotions in vocals and music are not dominant. The guitar playing is regularly compelling; the bass is also well heard. The division between (bass) guitar and keys is fine. Dit concept album gaat over \u200b\u200bde bio-industrie. Het verhaal laat het leven zien (vanaf de geboorte tot de dood) vanuit het perspectief van een dier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018The Arrival\u2019 start kalm met sampling en meerdere laagjes gitaarspel. De rustige zang sluit aan bij de muziek. Dit speelt zich af vlak na de geboorte van het dier, en zijn\/haar kijk op de \u201cwereld\u201d om zich heen. Tijdens een instrumentaal stuk is er sampling toegevoegd. \u2018I Can&#8217;t Get Out\u2019 heeft wat meer volume en het ritme is pakkend. Het jonge dier wil weg, maar kan er niet uit. Je hoort de wanhoop in de stem van Volker Oster. Het intro van \u2018I Need A Wise Friend\u2019 is mooi. Volker heeft veel diversiteit in zijn stem. Hij vertelt op intense manier over het lijden en de eenzaamheid van het dier. Vocale delen worden afgewisseld met instrumentale stukken. Lichter en zwaarder gespeelde delen wisselen elkaar af. Ongemerkt zitten er best veel laagjes in de muziek. \u2019Once In A While\u2019 bevat lekker veel prog en diverse twists and turns, het einde is vrij onverwacht. Tijdens het intro van \u2018The Petition\u2019 klinkt het geluid van het tokkelen op de snaren van strijkinstrumenten. Door de bijzondere combinatie van instrumenten en de onverwachte wendingen word je als het ware de muziek ingetrokken. Er zijn veel details in zowel de vocale als de instrumentale delen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Calm Down\u2019 start met een dromerige sfeer; het lijkt of er niks aan de hand is, maar schijn bedriegt\u2026 De gestapelde zang is subtiel, maar mooi toegevoegd. Een \u201chart beat\u201d is verweven in de muziek. Heel even klinkt de muziek vervormd, dit past bij de toegevoegde geluiden. Dit speciale einde vloeit over naar de bijzondere start van een nummer dat uit twee delen bestaat. De monotone geluiden van \u2018The Abandon\u2019 (het eerste deel) passen bij de gezongen woorden en het uitzichtloze leven van het dier. Op de achtergrond hoor je woordeloze zang. Weer vallen de details in het rustige drumwerk positief op. Stapje voor stapje wordt de muziek langzamer, dan volgt er een plotselinge wending naar meer tempo en volume. Ook het tweede deel bevat diverse veranderingen. In \u2018The End\u2019 klinkt emotie door in pianospel en (woordeloze) zang. Het raakt me, zeker in combinatie met de \u201chartslag\u201d die op een gegeven moment te horen is. De strijkinstrumenten, het pianospel en de zang geven \u2018Why\u2019 een sombere sfeer. Er volgt een overgang naar een warmer, instrumentaal stuk. Dit uitgebreide stuk is goed gevuld met mooie wendingen. De zang die volgt, blijft in balans met de muziek. Dit is een terechte titeltrack, want het is een prachtig lang nummer, dat vlak voor het einde filmische allure krijgt. Door de tekst en de gesampelde dierengeluiden in \u2018The Dubiousness\u2019 besef je weer waar dit album over gaat. Dit is dusdanig goed gekozen, dat het niet overheersend is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>De woorden op het album zijn goed gekozen, want ze zitten niet vol verwijten of protesten. Het concept is dus zeker toegankelijk. De emoties in zang en muziek zijn niet dominant. Het gitaarspel is regelmatig meeslepend, ook de bas is goed te horen. De verdeling tussen (bas)gitaar en toetsen is prima.
