‘The Horn of Plenty’ is the second album by Dutch symphonic prog rock band The Boxx Orchestra. The opening track, ‘Daybreak’, has a retro feel. Ria Mulder sings narratively and quite monotonously here. The repetitions in the percussion snatch too much attention away from the compelling guitar playing. The symphonic elements come out a bit more in ‘Go For The Night’. The intro of ‘Simple Love Songs’ is enjoyable, but in terms of the way she sings, I don’t hear she is on fire. The title track is about our greed and overconsumption. The topic, and the own vocal colour in the vocals, might not appeal to everyone. Besides, there are quite a lot of repetitions in the music. I want to feel the love and pain of ‘I Won’t Recover’ to the bone\u2026 but regretfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of the twists and turns in these nine songs flow into each other. Some of the lyrics are clich\u00e9d. At times, it’s all predictable and quite sugary. The sound could be better. Still, there are pluses, such as: good intros, the bass is pleasantly present, fine organ sounds and pleasant details in the drumming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
