Multi-instrumentalist Ian Jones was one of the founding members of the progressive\/folk rock band Karnataka in the 1990s. There have been several band changes, including in vocals. What has remained is a beautiful, clear voice. Sertari is the current singer; she was voted the best vocalist of 2023 by the site ProgRock. Her voice could already be heard on ‘Requiem For A Dream’ (2023). The band is currently touring with this album. Because two concerts were scheduled for Saturday 15 June at De Bosuil in Weert (The Netherlands), Karnataka’s concert was in the afternoon. Apparently, this was an uncomfortable time for the visitors, as it was far too quiet for a band of this quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secrets of Angels<\/strong>
Exactly at half past three, the lights in the venue dimmed, the chatter of the visitors stopped immediately. Through a tape, a quiet intro sounded, the band members appeared one by one, then started playing. Accompanied by loud applause, Sertari appeared last, her wordless vocals matching the instrumental intro. She looked gorgeous. She wore a black top and printed leggings. The clocks on these matched the cover of their latest album. The recognisable intro to ‘Road to Cairo’ (from their previous album ‘Secrets of Angels’) followed. Although the singing and playing was good, the sound was not optimal. Fortunately, that got right later. The second song was ‘All Around the World’ (from ‘Requiem For A Dream’). Keyboardist Rob Wilsher played very focused. Luke Machin showed fantastic fast guitar playing. Ian’s bass was clearly audible. Sertari received a well deserved intermediate applause for her beautiful solo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

‘Heaven Can Wait’ is from the album ‘The Storm’. The audience was silent, so that the subdued beginning came into its own. Jack Summerfield drummed appropriately gently. Sertari’s elegant way of performing also suited this song. Again, Luke’s solo was fantastic, but Ian’s steady bass playing should not be forgotten either. Luke and Ian played wire less, this gave them freedom to walk towards each other, the took the opportunity to do so. There was plenty of interaction between the band members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gathering Light<\/strong>
Between an occasional song, there was a telling about the next song, or a sip of water. Otherwise, the concert went on non-stop. During the instrumental parts, Sertari danced, if the music allowed, she danced vigorously. Her singing and performance style were convincing. Her vocals changed from soft to powerful and always matched the music. Very occasionally, she seemed to have a little trouble with the very highest notes. Despite having recently Laryngitis she made it through! Because of the non-verbal communication between the band members, the many, abrupt turns went very well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Forgiven’ is briefly about forgiving yourself. This sensitive song started with keyboards and vocals. The small sung part further on, was particularly impressive. The distinctive, classical elements complemented this beautifully. The turn to the rocking part, and the rocking part itself, were finger-licking good. Especially in ‘The Gathering Light’, the difference in pitch between the drums stood out well. Here, Luke provided the backing vocals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Requiem for a Dream<\/strong>
Before the start of ‘Requiem for a Dream’, Ian briefly talked about the album’s concept climate change. The intro on the keys was atmospheric. Only Rob and Sertari were spotlighted, the rest of the stage was dark, this suited the mood. The quick turns to more tempo and volume flowed perfectly. So did the many twists and returns that followed. During a subdued piece, Sertari rhythmically tapped the microphone against her breastbone, this gave the feeling of a heartbeat. There were classical elements, moreover you could hear Troy Donockley’s Uilleann pipes (Irish bagpipes). The audience remained captivated, even during the minimalist parts played, hardly anything could be heard from out of the venue. Slowly, tempo and volume in the music were increased. The light did not go along with this. Still, there was just enough light to see the big smile on Sertari’s face. This was a terrific performance of the title track. This is an epic of over 20 minutes, the many twists and turns passed off flawlessly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The encore was ‘Forsaken’. Luke was soloing, sometimes with his “head in his neck”, his fingers seemed to move over the strings as if by themselves. Rightly, he received an interim applause. For a little longer, people could enjoy everything there was to hear and see, as this very last song was also performed very well. The respectful visitors had a splendid Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Karnataka zorgde voor een geweldige zaterdagmiddag.<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Multi-instrumentalist Ian Jones was in de jaren \u201990 \u00e9\u00e9n van de oprichters van de progressieve\/folk rockband Karnataka. Er zijn diverse bandwisselingen geweest, ook in de zang. Gebleven is een mooie, heldere stem. Sertari is de huidige zangeres, zij werd door de site ProgRock verkozen tot de beste vocalist van 2023. Haar stem was al te horen op \u2018Requiem For A Dream\u2019 (2023). Momenteel tourt de band met dit album. Omdat er zaterdag 15 juni twee concerten stonden gepland in De Bosuil te Weert, was het concert van Karnataka \u2019s middags. Blijkbaar was dit een onwennige tijd voor de bezoekers, want het was veel te rustig voor een band met deze kwaliteit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secrets of Angels <\/strong>
Precies om half vier doofden de lichten in de zaal, het gepraat van de bezoekers stopte meteen. Via een tape klonk een rustig intro, de bandleden verschenen \u00e9\u00e9n voor \u00e9\u00e9n, waarna ze begonnen te spelen. Onder luid applaus verscheen Sertari als laatste, haar woordeloze zang paste bij het instrumentale intro. Ze zag er prachtig uit. Ze droeg een zwart bovenstuk en een legging met print. De klokken hierop passen bij de cover van hun nieuwste album. Het herkenbare intro van \u2018Road to Cairo\u2019 (van hun vorige album \u2018Secrets of Angels\u2019) volgde. Hoewel er goed gezongen en gespeeld werd, was het geluid niet optimaal. Gelukkig werd dat later goed. Het tweede nummer was \u2018All Around the World\u2019 (van \u2018Requiem For A Dream). Toetsenist Rob Wilsher speelde heel gefocust. Luke Machin liet fantastisch snel gitaarspel horen. De bas van Ian was duidelijk te horen. Sertari kreeg heel terecht tussentijds applaus voor haar prachtige solo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Heaven Can Wait\u2019 komt van het album \u2018The Storm\u2019. Het publiek was stil, zodat het ingetogen begin goed tot zijn recht kwam. Jack Summerfield drumde passend zacht. Ook Sertari\u2019s elegante manier van bewegen paste bij dit nummer. Weer was de solo van Luke fantastisch, maar ook het steady bas spel van Ian mogen we niet vergeten. Luke Machin en Ian speelden wire less, dit gaf hun de ruimte om naar elkaar toe te lopen. Daar maakten ze zeker gebruik van. Er was voldoende interactie tussen de bandleden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Gathering Light<\/strong>
Tussen een enkel nummer werd er iets verteld over het volgende nummer, of er werd een slokje water gedronken. Verder ging het concert non-stop door. Tijdens de instrumentale delen danste Sertari, als de muziek het toeliet danste ze krachtig. Haar zang en de manier van performen waren overtuigend. Haar zang wisselde van zacht naar krachtig en sloot steeds aan bij de muziek. Heel af en toe leek het of ze een klein beetje moeite had met de allerhoogste noten. Ondanks dat ze pas een Laryngitis (ontsteking aan het strottenhoofd) heeft gehad, haalde ze deze wel! Door de non-verbale communicatie tussen de bandleden verliepen de vele, plotselinge wendingen zeer goed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2018Forgiven\u2019 gaat kort gezegd over jezelf vergeven. Dit gevoelige nummer startte met keyboards en zang. Vooral het klein gezongen deel verderop was indrukwekkend. De kenmerkende, klassieke elementen vulden dit prachtig aan. De wending naar het rockende gedeelte, en het rockende deel zelf, waren om je vingers bij af te likken. Vooral in \u2018The Gathering Light\u2019 kwam het verschil in toonhoogte tussen de drums goed naar voren. Hier zorgde Luke voor de achtergrondzang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Requiem for a Dream<\/strong>
Voor aanvang van \u2018Requiem for a Dream\u2019 vertelde Ian kort over het concept klimaatverandering van het album. Het intro op de toetsen was sferisch. Alleen Rob en Sertari stonden in een spotlight, de rest van het podium was donker, dit paste bij de sfeer. De snelle wendingen naar meer tempo en volume verliep perfect. Dat gold ook voor de vele twist en returns die volgde. Tijdens een ingetogen stuk tikte Sertari ritmisch met de microfoon tegen haar borstbeen, dit gaf het gevoel van een hartslag. Er waren klassieke elementen, bovendien je hoorde de Uilleann pipes (Ierse doedelzak) van Troy Donockley. Het publiek bleef geboeid, ook tijdens de minimalistisch gespeelde delen was er van uit de zaal nauwelijks iets te horen. Langzaam werden tempo en volume in de muziek opgeschroefd. Het licht ging hier niet in mee. Toch was er net genoeg licht om de brede smile op het gezicht van Sertari te zien. Dit was een geweldige uitvoering van de titeltrack. Dit is een epic van ruim 20 minuten, de vele wendingen verliepen foutloos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

De toegift was \u2018Forsaken\u2019. Luke soleerde, soms met zijn \u201choofd in de nek\u201d, zijn vingers leken als vanzelf over de snaren te gaan. Terecht kreeg hij een tussentijds applaus. Nog even kon men genieten van alles wat er te horen en te zien was, want ook dit allerlaatste nummer werd zeer goed uitgevoerd.
