Singer\/guitarist Jon Amor became known for ‘The Hoax’. He plays with DVL, Guy Forsyth’s band. In addition, with his Jon Amor Blues Group and solo, Jon released several albums. Recently, Jon Amor Trio’s ‘The Turnaround’ was released. This debut album features 11 blues-rock, roots rock songs, including a few covers. For example, ‘Tonight I’m Gonna Make You A Star’ by B.B. King.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First you hear the title track with its enjoyable, catchy intro. Not only does it contain lovely guitar playing, but the rhythm section is also very good. Tom Gilkes’ bass is well heard, and Jerry Soffe drums beautifully detailed. This opening track, with its sudden ending, sticks deliciously in your head. The lyrics of ‘Make You Mine’ are not too complicated and invite you to sing along. Especially in the chorus, you notice that it was written to be played live. You just feel where there will be interaction with the audience. Moreover, the instrumental piece offers room for improvisation during live show. While the unexpected ending is not easy to play perfectly live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The flow of the instrumental intro ‘Miss James’ is enjoyable, the guitar has a ‘leading role’ here. Again, there are lovely bass grooves and the drum kit is played calmly. During a calm part, there is a good combination of the rhythm section and Jon’s voice. ‘I Know What You’re Using’ is pleasingly slow. During an instrumental section, tempo and volume increase slightly, but the laidback atmosphere is preserved. The songs that follow also have a fine flow. Some songs are a bit calmer, but ‘Sit & Wonder’ is rousing. The clapping is catchy; you automatically tap along to the rhythm. The intros have been well thought out, which you notice, for instance, in the special, calm intro of ‘She Thought I Was An Eagle’. This song by the Jon Amor Blues Group has undergone a true metamorphosis: surprising, but very successful. The faster guitar playing forms a good contrast with the rhythm section. Here, the intense vocals have a slightly rough edge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

‘Lovin’ Cup’ is catchy. This (covered) feel-good song has, up to and including the end, a nice build-up. The rhythm in ‘Nothing Coming Easy’ is again calm, yet there are nice details woven into it. The atmosphere of this last song is homely and casual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The album was recorded live at ‘Crescent Records Studio, Swindon (UK). The sound is slightly on the dull side, but that doesn’t bother. You can feel the love for the music. The songs were written and\/or played with a live performance in mind. The accessible and catchy rhythms and melodies soon stick in your head. The details and build-up ensure that the album remains captivating. The division between guitar, bass and drums is fantastic. There is not only cool guitar playing. But there are also plenty of delicious bass grooves and fine drums\/percussion. Care has clearly been taken with the compositions, that includes the outros. Moreover, the tracklist order has been well thought out. In short, ‘The Turnaround’ is a very good album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
